More on MUL.APIN

One thing that struck me about yesterday’s article is the name MUL.APIN, with the dot in the center of the world which is similar to the translations by of the Sumerian texts which tell the stories that we find in our bible, and seem to indicate that the earth was populated by “gods” from other planets”:

“The ‘Eridu Genesis’…described the creation of man by the four great gods [the Anunnaki]: An [‘Sky’, the source of rain and most powerful of the gods], Enlil [‘Lord Wind’, the power in ‘Growing Weather’, creator of the hoe], Ninhursaga [‘Lady of the Stony Ground’, mother of wildlife], and Enki [rival of Ninhursaga]. After Nintur [Ninhursaga] had decided to turn man from his primitive nomadic camping grounds toward city life the period began when animals flourished on earth and kingship came down from heaven. The earliest cities were built, were named, had the measuring cups, emblems of a redistributional economic system, allotted to them, and were divided between the gods. Irrigation agriculture was developed and man thrived and multiplied. However, the noise made by man in his teeming settlements began to vex Enlil sorely, and, driven beyond endurance, he persuaded the other gods to wipe out man in an great flood. Enki, thinking quickly, found a way to warn his favorite, one Ziusudra. He told him to build a boat in which to survive the flood with his family and representatives of the animals.”

Fathers of the Zodiac

(thanks to redicecreations.com for the link!)

Using modern techniques — and some rocks — a US astronomer has traced the origin of a set of ancient clay tablets to a precise date and place. The tablets show constellations thought to be precursors of the present-day zodiac.

The tablets, known collectively as MUL.APIN, contain nearly 200 astronomical observations, including measurements related to several constellations. They are written in cuneiform, a Middle-Eastern script that is one of the oldest known forms of writing, and were made in Babylon around 687 BC.

But most archaeologists believe that the tablets are transcriptions of much earlier observations made by Assyrian astronomers. Just how much older has been disputed — the estimates go back to 2,300 BC.

Now Brad Schaefer, an astronomer at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, says he has dated the observations to 1,370 BC, give or take a century.

The tablets contain a number of different observations, including the day each year that certain constellations first appeared in the dawn sky. These dates change over the millennia because of a tiny wobble in the Earth’s axis.

“It’s like a big hour hand in the sky,” Schaefer says.

Although the ancient Babylonians appear to have originated the practice of astrology using fixed stars and the luminaries, it was the Assyrians who seem to have discovered the signs of the zodiac that we use today.

Putin and Bush on the eve of the G-8

Vladimir Putin is kind of a creepy character to me, a quality not usually associated with his Libra Sun since Libras are famously charming and people pleasers. But a look at his birthchart tells a more complete story.

Putin’s four Libra planets (Sun, Saturn, Neptune and Mercury) are all in the twelfth house of karma or self-undoing. Planets in the twelfth house tend to operate unconsciously and often secretively. Twelfth house people tend to be hidden not only from others but from themselves as well; much of their motivation and will tends to operate below the surface where it is difficult for them to access. The Libra stellium, particularly the conjunction of Saturn and Neptune, is squared by Uranus, planet of revolutionary fervor and individuality.

The conjunction of Saturn and Neptune in the birthchart creates an inner conflict between the desire to experience spiritual bliss (Neptune) and a desire for worldly achievement and structure. When the conjunction of these two planets is squared by the radical influence of Uranus there is a tendency to swing wildly between the repression of Saturn and the desire for freedom of Uranus. Putin appears to have chosen the side of repression and rigidity, but within him beats the heart of a revolutionary that refuses to take orders from anyone else.

The chart shows Scorpio rising (although the birthtime is somewhat suspect since Russians did not keep accurate records) which can give the outward impression of an intense personality even though the individual himself may not have that impression of himself. Though secretive, the rest of Putin’s chart is somewhat light with Mars in Sagittarius and so much Libra. The creepiness of his intensity could be a part of the ascendant disguise that he has learned to utilize for his benefit.

The source of […]

Saturn: Both Beast and Prince

Saturn beast and princeSaturn is well known as the Celestial Taskmaster, and very few of us relish the idea of being called into the principal’s office. However, there is another side of Saturn that is truly wonderful if we get to know him for who he truly is. Liz Greene says, “[Saturn’s] face as the Beast is well-recognized but [his] alternate face as the Handsome Prince is not often considered; however, without both of these, the symbol cannot communicate its meaning.”

As Saturn and Neptune approach the third phase of their opposition cycle, it may be useful to delve a little more deeply into both gods as we strive to balance the two forces. Saturn is the architect and builder of the structures which give form to our lives. Saturn gives us rules and boundaries to keep society functioning smoothly, and confers on us the discipline and ability to work hard and seek achievement. Saturn’s influence also builds strength of character that helps us withstand the storms of life, a characteristic not often recognized.

It is this quality of building inner strength that I value most about Saturn, but in order to obtain this gift we must follow his rules. When we have Saturn prominent in our charts or affecting us by transit, Saturn demands certain things of us. He wants us to spend time alone in introspection. He wants us to evaluate what we have done with our lives and what we have accomplished thus far. He demands that we seek nothing less than perfection and is ready with criticism when we fall short of our goals so that we will work to correct our errors. He restricts us from enjoyable pursuits unless we have achieved […]
