The astrology of summer weather extremes

Wildfires in Russia are claiming 700 lives a day.  Floods in China and Pakistan threaten not only lives but also the region’s political stability.  Icy cold temperatures in South America have killed dozens of people in a region that is not accustomed to this kind of cold.  And a gigantic “ice island” has broken off the Greenland glacier, sending a sheet of ice four times the size of New York into the open Atlantic.

Global warming?  Or just another effect of the Cardinal Drama?

This summer’s weather tragedies have not surprised astrologers.  The astrological chart for each solstice and equinox reflects to some extent the type of weather that we are likely to experience that season, and this Summer Solstice chart was a doozy.

As reported in this blog, the Solstice Sun was in an exact square aspect to Jupiter and Uranus at zero point Aries, the first of the fire signs.  Looking back, we can see how the Jupiter influence in Aries might correlate with a rapid spread/expansion (Jupiter) of wildfires (Aries).  But with the Solstice Sun at zero degrees Cancer in a trine to Chiron (wounding and healing) at zero degrees Pisces, there is a strong water component to the chart as well.  But that water element is challenged by the fire element, and we can see that reflected in global weather patterns such as in Moscow where the dry fire has overcome the water element, and in China and Pakistan where the water element has overcome the fire.

Pluto was also strong in the Solstice chart, opposing the Solstice Sun adding a note of life-changing intensity and danger, and Saturn was within range as well forming the fourth limb of the Grand Cross.

These weather extremes […]

Stocks fall sharply as the Saturn/Pluto square approaches

This is what I’ve been warning about as Saturn and Pluto create an atmosphere of doom and gloom:

Stocks and interest rates tumbled Wednesday as investors around the world took a bleaker view of the U.S. economy.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 265 points, its biggest drop in six weeks, and all the major indexes fell more than 2 percent. The yield on the Treasury’s 10-year note fell to its lowest level since March 2009 as investors worried about the economy and avoiding stocks sought the safety of government securities.

Companies across a wide range of industries dropped Wednesday. Only 442 stocks rose on the New York Stock Exchange, while 2,627 fell, a sign that investors expect all businesses to suffer if the economy continues to weaken.

Investors’ gloom deepened a day after the Federal Reserve said it would begin buying government bonds as a way to stimulate the economy. News of slower industrial growth in China and a disappointing economic indicator in Japan helped send stocks plunging first in Asia, then in Europe and the U.S.

Saturn was the planet of death before Pluto came along, and Saturn and Pluto are not the most joyful of planets.  Saturn is all about reality testing, and Pluto seeks to destroy anything that is corrupt and rotting, so when the two of them meet in an energetic square we can generally expect the mood to dim.

I don’t see this as a bad thing, because it’s important to face the reality (Saturn) of the current worldwide economic situation rather than have blind hope for a return to the unrealistic growth of the past twenty years.  For investors this might turn out to be a very good thing, as the exact square of Saturn […]

In honor of Ted Stevens, who died today

…I’d like to repost this video which is still one of the most hilarious things I’ve ever seen. This video was created after Alaska Senator Ted Stevens, who wanted the phone companies to be able to charge internet providers, famously reported, “The internet is not a big truck. It’s a series of tubes.”

With three planets in Scorpio and an Aries Moon, Ted Stevens did not like to lose and was famous for his fierce manner on the Senate floor. He was a fearless promoter of Alaska interests and brought home a lot of bacon to that state, including the famous “Bridge to Nowhere.”

In my mind, though, his biggest contribution to American life are the words that resulted in this music video.

New Moon in Leo, August 9 2010

New Moon august 9The New Moon occurs in Leo on August 9th at 11:08 pm (Eastern time).  The lunation itself (the Sun/Moon conjunction) makes no aspects to any other planet, which suggests that the power of self-expression can act forcefully, unencumbered by any other influence. This is a wonderful time to start a new creative venture, or a program to market your business. Anything that puts YOU on center stage is appropriate with this New Moon.

Leo is about celebration and joy, but there is a dark side as well.  On the Astrodynamics Facebook page, when the Moon went into Leo I wrote “It’s all about ME now.”  A reader responded, “”You’d think, with leo sun, leo asc, leo mars, leo uranus & leo in my 2nd house I’d love it when it’s all about me. But I don’t. This whole day has had me feeling trancelike, lost, sad and sort of pointless.”  Reading this I pondered the way in which Leo’s focus on Self can make us self-involved and cause us to lose sight of the Flow, and sure enough this reader later added:   After thinking about it some more last night, it seems to me I actually WAS making it all about me, even if it wasn’t positive/power/confident thinking, I still was pointedly aware of myself all day.”

Everything astrological has both a positive and negative manifestation.  We like to think of Leo as representing the celebration of life; the Divine Child whose innocence and joy lights up the path of everyone that surrounds him or her.  But the dark side of Leo is Self-involvement and egocentricity.   In this New Moon the power of the conscious mind (Sun) and the instinctive emotions (Moon) combine […]
