Chinese jobs use “star signs” to discriminate

chinese astrology job discriminationWhile I always love to see astrology getting some press in mainstream news, the first clue that someone doesn’t know a thing about astrology is when they call the zodiac “star signs.”  The twelve signs of the zodiac represent an image of the apparent path of the Sun as it travels around the Earth, from our perspective.  The signs are relevant to the Sun, not the stars.

A Chinese firm has decided Scorpios and Virgos are too moody and critical, telling job seekers with those star signs they need not apply. Capricorns, Pisces and Libras, on the other hand, are welcome.

The unusual requirements are part of a job ad posted at a university in the central city of Wuhuan by an English language training company, and have generated a storm of online controversy since they were uncovered this week.

“We don’t want Scorpios or Virgos, and Capricorns, Pisces and Libras will be prioritised,” the job spec reads, according to the Chutian Metropolis Daily, a local newspaper in Wuhan.

The report quoted a woman in charge at the unnamed firm as saying she had done research and found Scorpios had strong personalities and were moody, while Virgos were hugely critical and did not stay in one job for long.

“I hired people with those two star signs before, and they either liked quarrelling with colleagues or they could not do the job for long,” the woman, surnamed Xia, said.

As my brilliant readers know, the article is talking about Sun signs, the sign that the Sun was traveling through at the time the individuals involved were born.  Sun signs are just one piece of the birthchart, which contains an intricate collection of infinite personality possibilities.  Someone with a […]

Sunday Inspiration: A spell to commit Pronoia

thanks to for this poem by psychotherapist Jennifer Welwood.

Willing to experience aloneness,
I discover connection everywhere;
Turning to face my fear,
I meet the warrior who lives within;
Opening to my loss,
I am given unimaginable gifts;
Surrendering into emptiness,
I find fullness without end.
Each condition I flee from pursues me.
Each condition I welcome transforms me
And becomes itself transformed
Into its radiant jewel-like essence.
I bow to the one who has made it so,
Who has crafted this Master Game;
To play it is pure delight,
To honor it is true devotion.

Pronoia is the philosophy that the Universe is arranged for our ultimate benefit – the opposite of Paranoia which is the suspicion that the Universe is out to get us.  Although the word was first coined in the early 1980s, back in the mid-1950s JD Salinger wrote “I’m a kind of paranoiac in reverse. I suspect people of plotting to make me happy.”

Sagittarius New Moon eclipse, November 25 2011 PLUS Mercury turns retrograde

Sagittarius New Moon November 25Art by , from .  The New Moon occurred a few hours ago, but we are still in its influence for the next day or two.  Although astronomically this is technically a partial eclipse, because the lunation was 12 degrees away from the Nodes of the Moon, that is a bit too far to have much astrological impact.

Like all New Moons, the Sun is conjunct the Moon, fusing the emotional instincts (Moon) with the conscious identity (Sun) to create a powerful new beginning.  Every New Moon in the lunar cycle provides us with an opportunity to begin again with a clean slate.  Under the Sagittarius New Moon we move from the darkness of Scorpio and its emphasis on the underworld of Soul experiences into the lighter framework of the Sagittarian need for expansion and a sense of meaning about life.

There are four planets in Sagittarius right now, so the Sagittarian emphasis is strong.  In addition, Jupiter (the planet that rules Sag) is in an exact trine to the New Moon which gives us a Double Whammy (technical astrological term) of Jupiter/Sun/Moon energy. Now is the time to forge a vision that expands your life, your consciousness, your mind.  Eliminate from your being the need to stay rooted in the past or any idea of who you think you are.

Jupiter and Sagittarius work with our belief systems, helping us to understand more about life and about what gives our life meaning, but those ideologies are not meant to be static or confined under the Jupiterian influence.  They are meant to continue expanding, taking us into ever broadening circles of knowledge and wisdom.  Chiron (wounding and healing) interacts […]

Blogversary and Blogvacation

This week marks the sixth anniversary of this blog.  Until recently, I posted just about every day and it has been an incredible way to meet people from around the world and share astrological information.

Perhaps it is my second Saturn Return, but I am feeling a bit burned out.  I am going to give myself a two-week blog vacation and will return in early December.  There are six years’ worth of archives, though, so please satisfy your astro obsession in the archives of this blog and by visiting my friends who are blogrolled in the sidebar.

I will still be posting astrological updates on my Facebook page and will probably post for the New Moon coming up next week.  Have a great two weeks and I’ll be back soon. 🙂
