The astrology of the Penn State scandal

On November 4, 2011 a grand jury indicted Jerry Sandusky, former assistant football coach at Penn State University, on 40 counts of sexual abuse against young boys.  Evidently these assaults or advances had been going on since 1994 despite the knowledge of other officials with the football team.

What is even more shocking is that Sandusky apparently used a charity that he founded (The Second Mile) to find the young boys (aged 11-14) for his misadventures which he is now calling “horseplay.”  Sandusky is married and he and his wife adopted six children and fostered many others before founding the charity. I am not a qualified psychologist, but the fact that Sandusky was able to continue this double life for nearly 20 years without detection would seem to suggest some sort of psychological pathology.  Let’s see what his chart says:

Jerry Sandusky (born January 26, 1944, time unknown, Washington Pennsylvania) is a double Aquarius: both the Sun and Moon are in that sign of rational thinking and reason.  We don’t know his birth time so we can’t tell his ascendant which would tell us more about his personality, but the Sun in Sandusky’s chart is opposed by Pluto (obsession, compulsion and experiences that transform us).  In their highest form the stress and challenges of Pluto/Sun aspects empower us and strengthen our will.  In individuals who are less self-reflective, this aspect can suggest an individual with deep-seated power issues and compulsions.

The kind of intense drama that is necessitated by Pluto/Sun aspects can be very difficult for Aquarian types who tend to dislike being dragged into the underworld of emotional chaos, and sometimes there is a split in the personality as a result.  This split can manifest as someone who attracts […]

Sunday inspiration and planetary news

earth grand trineThis week’s inspiration is the Grand Trine in Earth that is blessing us from the heavens over the next couple of weeks.  A Grand Trine occurs when three (or more) planets align in a triangular formation, dividing the circle of the zodiac into thirds.  The number three is a perfect number: it cannot be subdivided and creates a perfect balance.

Astrologically, the trine formation promotes ease and harmony, with each influence flowing into the next.  Grand Trines in earth encourage stability and security, with a practical application for all of our ideas (air), feelings (water) and excitement (Fire).

Pluto in Capricorn was first in a trine formation to Jupiter in Taurus early in 2011, and this is the second phase of that cycle.  Jupiter, as King of the Gods, encourages us to seek experiences that are larger than ourselves and when harmonized with Pluto, that process becomes easier and achieves greater magnification.  This is an excellent dynamic for manifestation.

Over the next two weeks or so Mars in Virgo will get into the act.  Mars celebrates the inspiration and fire that comes from the belly and provides motivation for our goals and aspirations, but in Virgo Mars is not particularly dynamic.  Mars in Virgo prefers to take care of the details, but the trines from Jupiter and Pluto encourages us to expand our view (Jupiter) and unleash the power (Pluto) that lies within us.

When a planet opposes another planet that is a part of a Grand Trine that formation becomes a Kite, and we have Chiron right now in opposition to Mars and serving as the fulcrum for the Kite formation.  The opposition contains stress and tension that helps to motivate the Grand Trine into action, so […]

Full Moon in Taurus, November 10, 2011

Full moon Taurus November 2011photos stolen from . Since she is a friend she probably won’t mind!  The Moon will reach its fullness in Taurus at 3:16 pm Eastern time (7:16 pm GMT) on November 10, 2011.  The Sun is in Scorpio, and with the climax of the lunar cycle at the Full Moon a tension exists between the solar conscious mind, currently influenced by Scorpio, and the instincts of the lunar principle in Taurus.

The Taurus/Scorpio polarity offers a primal dance between Mars (traditional ruler of Scorpio) and Venus (traditional ruler of Taurus).  Mars is aggressive, assertive, rough, defensive, protective; Venus is soft, yielding, flowing, sensitive.  Where Scorpio is aggressive in its need to eliminate and procreate, Taurus longs for stability and security. These two sides of our nature are both equally important, yet for many of us they battle in our psyche and require periodic adjustments to achieve a balance that will offer us some peace.  Because Scorpio and Taurus are both fixed signs that do not adjust easily, there is greater tension in this polarity than in most of the other signs in opposition (Leo and Aquarius is the other fixed pair).

I like to think of Earth as being a ruler of Taurus, since Taurus embodies the love of Earth, gardening, and all things natural. And Pluto is the modern ruler of Scorpio.  So we are also seeing here the polarity between Pluto, the Lord of the Underworld, and Gaia, the mother of all living things. Life and death – generation and regeneration.  These are no small factors in the course of a life, and they are the primal factors underlying this Full Moon.

With the Full Moon being the peak of the […]

Neptune and Chiron turn direct, and other planetary news this week

Chiron and Neptune turn directNeptune and Chiron both change direction in a few days after traveling retrograde since earlier this year, which means their (apparent) motion has slowed to a virtual standstill as they prepare to move forward again.  These two have been tied together since early in 2009, and although the exact conjunction was complete in 2010, since then the two have been within three degrees of each other. When the Soul Healer (Chiron) and the Soul Teacher (Neptune) get together, you know there is some serious internal work to be done and we are likely to find that to be true over the next week or so when both planets change their apparent direction (planets don’t really move backwards, but because we observe the movement of the planets from earth they sometimes appear to change direction).

Over the next few days we have another smaller, but still important planetary cycle involving the opposition (180 degrees) of Mars to both Chiron and Neptune.  Mars represents our drive and our desires; it inspires and motivates us to achieve our wishes and dreams.  It’s the aggressive force, and when blocked it can turn angry and frustrated.  Mars is in Leo now where it particularly wants to have its own way and resists losing control, but over the next few days Mars will be opposed by Neptune.

Neptune is the transcendent urge – it inspires us to seek experiences that go beyond the boundaries of our day-to-day reality, and it tends to blur and soften the urges of Mars.  This can be confusing if we are determined to get our way, but if we use this time to seek the wisdom of the soul instead of the ego during this time […]

My Saturn Return ate my Skywatch

At least that’s what I’m blaming it on.  Those of you on my mailing list already know this story, but after spending over two hours writing the November Skywatch a template glitch ate the entire thing before it could be posted.  Thanks to those of you who suggested writing the article in a Word document and then transferring it into the website  – I will definitely do that next time!  The weird thing is I kept saving the document because I had a feeling something was going to happen.  Anyway… Saturn transits tend to create delays and disappointments and events that frustrate us, all in the name of keeping one’s nose to the grindstone. My chart has Saturn, Sun and Neptune all in a nice little triad and while Saturn has completed the transit to my Saturn and Sun it is now sitting right on my Neptune.  A very apt significator for the confusion of the disappearance into the ethers of my writing (Neptune rules fogs, mists, illusion and all things confusing, as well as the higher aspects of transcendence.)

But I will make up for it by posting everything that WOULD have been in Skywatch here at Astrological Musings.

During the month of November there are still no major interactions between the outer planets to create havoc, which means that any planetary transits to our own chart will be singular rather than the influence of a collective.  It also means that we are likely not to have any significantly huge global events, so this continues to be a time of rest and rehabilitation as we gear up for the fun with Uranus and Pluto in 2012.

Neptune turns direct on November 9th after traveling retrograde since the summer.  Since […]
