Mercury retrograde, and a Virgo Full Moon: February 2013

Virgo Full Moon February 2013Mercury turns retrograde today (February 23) and it’s time to go over the things we’ve done in the past in order to help perfect our future. Mercury is in Pisces now where it tends to be more adaptable and flexible and doesn’t mind reversing itself in order to improve the flow of our lives so this retrograde period may not be as difficult as some others.

Mercury turns retrograde for three weeks four times a year, so it is not a rare event.  I like to think of retrograde periods as being similar to ocean waves on a beach.  The ocean comes towards the shore, and then it retreats so that it can come once more – the ebb and flow of life.  We progress forwards in our life, marching towards the end of time, and then periodically we retreat, take a break, and re-evaluate that progress.  We correct the things that aren’t working, and improve the things that are.

While it’s true that Mercury retrograde periods are not great times to plan a vacation or make a major purchase, I confess I do these things all the time.  In my real estate business I can’t take off three weeks four times a year when Mercury turns retrograde, but if I have to sign a contract during that time I know to be prepared for renegotiations and reversals.

But Mercury retrograde is not the only news – we also have a Full Moon on February 25th in Virgo, the sign of practical reality and the body/mind/spirit system. I personally believe that Chiron is the modern ruler of Virgo because both share an attention to the balance between mental and spiritual health to the physical body. This […]

The astrology of Oscar Pistorius

Oscar Pistorius astrology The Bionic Man

Oscar Pistorius is in jail right now awaiting trial for the Valentine’s Day shooting of his girlfriend, Veena Steenkampf.  Previously he rose to fame as the first double amputee to win a medal in an able bodied world track event.

Pistorius is a Bionic Man as befits a transhuman athlete in the Aquarian Age – fitted with artificial limbs that some argue give him an unfair advantage over mere mortals.  (See my posts on Transhumanism here.)

Pistorius was profiled in the last year in a piece that described him as “more than a little crazy” – a risk taker who was fearful of intruders and an excellent shot at the firing range.  This fear is captured in a from November: “Nothing like getting home to hear the washing machine on and think it’s an intruder.”

The astrological chart of Pistorius offers interesting clues into his character.  The French website offers a birthtime of 10:30 am on November 22, 1986 (source: email from family member) which indicates Aquarius rising.  Aquarius is the sign of detachment and reason, technology and innovation.  We can’t be 100% sure of this birthtime, of course, but an Aquarius ascendant is  the perfect mask for a Transhuman-type athlete; someone who seeks to shatter the paradigms of what is possible for human beings to accomplish.

His Sun is at the very last degree of Scorpio, often called the “critical” or “anaretic” degree.  In medieval astrology the “anareta” was a planet of destruction.  While modern astrology doesn’t take these significators literally, the 29th degree indicates a completion of some kind of karma and needs to be taken seriously.  The Sun is on the Scorpio/Sagittarius […]

Aquarius New Moon, February 10, 2013

Aquarius New Moon.  The Moon is New in Aquarius today, offering up an opportunity to surrender all of the trappings of personality that culminated at the Leo Full Moon two weeks ago and opening up to a more universal perspective.

At the New Moon the energies of the Sun and Moon are fused, linking the solar conscious ego to the instinctive lunar heart of the soul. Conscious and unconscious, exterior and interior – there is a fusion here that provides us with an opportunity for a new beginning in the sign in which the lunation falls.

This New Moon is particularly powerful because of an exact square between the Sun and Moon to the North Node which makes this a bit like an eclipse. The lunar nodes are like signposts to destiny – they suggest events that are fated and point the direction in which our soul needs to travel. When a lunation is in a tight alignment to the nodes it signifies a pivotal point in our life so attention should be paid to any signals that are received at this time.

Aquarius is the inventor, the humanitarian and the scientist.  There is a cold idealism to Aquarius which enables us to look past our individual desires and needs to see the brilliant potential of a broader view. This is not a time when feelings and emotions will be honored – instead the higher mind takes the forefront of human experience.

A challenging square from Mars to Jupiter culminates at the New Moon, activating both planets to greater expression. This is a time of high energy, in which our passions (Mars) are given free rein (Jupiter) and we are energized by the imaginative force of […]

Guns, Guns, Guns, in the USA

guns astrologyEverywhere you turn these days the discussion is about guns.

Guns are not a new topic for discussion, but the feverish frenzy over which gun rights advocates are protecting their rights to own assault weapons and other types of weapons meant for mass killings is rather recent.

There is no nation like the United States in terms of gun ownership.  The (Sibly) chart of the United States has Sagittarius rising, which echoes the expansive philosophies that have always drove the country towards constant expansion and religious ideals, both Sagittarian concepts.  We normally would look towards Mars for signs of warfare like behavior, but in the US chart the passion for guns is found in the placement of Pluto in the second house.  This fanatacisim about guns originates not in an aggressive desire to assert force (Mars) but in a hunger for freedom (Sagittarius ascendant) and a relentless (Pluto) drive to accumulate masses of money through manipulation of the nation’s ideals (second house).

American gun lovers don’t want to accumulate stockpiles of weapons to kill their neighbors.  They want these weapons because they believe that it will protect that Sagittarius rising freedom.  It doesn’t hurt that Uranus (planet of liberation from oppression) conjoins both Venus (partners) and Mars (aggression) in the chart.  That Uranus/Mars conjunction especially denotes a radical desire for liberty at all costs.  Americans own twice as many guns as any other country, per capita.

That’s where Pluto in the second house enters the picture, in the form of the National Rifle Association.  The NRA spent $15 million in the 2012 presidential campaign, using a fearmongering campaign promoting the idea that Obama planned to take away gun rights (he wasn’t).  This same organization used the school shooting in Newtown […]

Planetary Illuminations for February now posted!

You can read the whole article here.  Meanwhile, here is an overview of the major players this month:   REBUILDING HEALTHY STRUCTURES The planetary configuration with the most impact right now continues to be the applying square formation between Uranus (radical behavior and change) and Pluto (destruction and regeneration). Although it won’t reach its exact alignment until May of this year, the two are within five degrees of exactitude which is tight enough to set off fireworks around the world. Revolution has spread from Egypt to Libya to Syria to Mali, and resistance (Uranus) to power structures (Pluto) is reaching a feverish pitch. In our personal lives we may have experienced the erosion of the foundational structures upon which we built our day-to-day existence and are having to learn to trust that on the other side of destruction (Pluto) and radical change (Uranus) is a fresh new beginning that allows us to be more authentically true to who we are at our core. Softening this alignment and providing stability and encouragement is a harmonious sextile between Saturn and Pluto. Saturn is in Scorpio, which is ruled by Pluto under the modern system, so the link to Pluto is a “double whammy” which connects the transformative power of that planet to the discipline of Saturn. Saturn is a builder – he works tirelessly to create structures that have a solid foundation – and in Scorpio he must dig deep below the surface in order to anchor the footings of the structures upon which we rely. The harmonious sextile to Pluto facilitates this process, helping us to understand that which is real and must be retained as opposed to the fluff with which we decorate our day to day existence. Chiron is […]
