Mercury retrograde, June 26th through July 20th 2013

Mercury retrogradeMercury turned retrograde this morning and will appear to travel backwards from our perspective on earth for about three weeks.  Even people who don’t believe in astrology have come to believe in Mercury retrograde periods which can often bring communication snafus and equipment breakdowns.  Mercury rules (among other things) the mind, mental activity, interpersonal communication, short trips, and communication equipment.

Retrograde periods serve an important purpose – they encourage us to slow down, to look back over our lives and re-evaluate our path.  It can be frustrating to feel that we are going over the same ground again and again, but if we look carefully we will see that actually progress is being made.  Perhaps there is something that we failed to notice before – something that needs to be redone before we can truly move forward again.

Many of you already know this, but it bears repeating: during Mercury retrograde periods it’s important to be careful about communication.  Don’t be surprised if contracts require renegotiation.  Missed appointments are common.  Important documents may be lost in the mail.

These are typically not the best periods for initiating a major purchase or making a big decision, unless the decision is to REdo another decision that was made before.  But often in life we must make these decisions during Mercury retrograde periods, and then we just have to try to be extra careful to be clear with our communication and think through every possible pitfall.  Then when glitches occur we can just laugh and say “Aha!  That’s just Mercury retrograde.”

These are great times to study, to go back and relearn something you thought you already knew, to redo your website, to update your goals – anything that you can REdo, REnegotiate […]

The astrology of whistleblower Edward Snowden

Edward Snowden astrologyNot since last year’s exposure by Julian Assange and Wikileaks of classified documents has there been such a dramatic exposure of secret spying as the current scandal involving Edward Snowden, the young man who has blown the whistle on the surveillance of the National Security Agency on ordinary Americans and revealed the details of the PRISM program to the international press. Snowden had traveled to Hong Kong but on June 23rd took a plane to Moscow, ostensibly under the protection of the Wikileaks organization, with plans to seek asylum in a country with a more open government, potentially Ecuador.

Incidentally, the Uranus/Pluto square (see the sidebar for a description of this planetary cycle) has a big part to play in the disruption by wild card factors (Uranus in Aries) of the state power structures (Pluto in Capricorn) and the revolutionary force of Uranus in Aries battling against any repressive factor is another highlight of this cycle.

The Planet Waves crew sent away for and received a copy of  which makes it much easier to do a comprehensive analysis of his chart.  This is an extremely significant event and even “Daniel Ellsberg, the man who leaked what became known as the Pentagon Papers, said today on CNN that Mr Snowden had done an “incalculable” service to his country and that his leaks might prevent America from becoming a surveillance state. (.)

Snowden’s chart shows a strong Gemini influence, with not only the Sun in Gemini (at 29 degrees, an important factor we will discuss later); but also a triple or quadruple whammy involving the ascendant (Gemini ascendant, ruled by Mercury, conjoined by Mercury which is in Gemini, ruled by Mercury). […]

Sunday inspiration: Finding balance in the Capricorn Moon

June Supermoon from

Today’s Full Moon is getting a lot of press because it’s literally the biggest Full Moon of the year – a Supermoon as coined by astrologer

From a post on the : “When the Moon’s feminine energy is combined with Capricorn’s discipline and drive for success, the result is a powerful, successful and disciplined female. The Greek goddess Athena immediately came to mind as a feminine archetype that knows her own worth and is not afraid to engage in the affairs of the world.”

That combination of engaging deeply in the realm of feelings and the inner heart (Cancer) and mastering the affairs of the world (Capricorn), like all polarities, can be difficult to achieve.  The appellation Athena means “Divine intelligence” and she was born literally from the mind of god (the head of her father Zeus).

When we live too entirely within the realm of feeling (Cancer) we risk losing the intelligence of the world that aids us in its mastery.  But if we place our entire attention on the machinations of the outer world and building structures to contain our lives (Capricorn) we risk losing the intuitive intelligence that connects us to others and helps us to work together for more effective life strategies.

That makes this image of Athena a brilliant one for the Capricorn Full Moon – she embodies the Divine Intelligence that helps us to bridge compassion and effectiveness, nurturing and discipline, the inner emotional realm and achievement and success.  Protecting one’s inner world and loved ones (Cancer) in order to grant success in the material world (Capricorn) is in fact Athena’s domain.

So at this Full Moon we seek to allow our hearts to […]

Jupiter and the stock market

financial astrology quantitative easingConjunctions of the Sun with Jupiter are generally seen to be favorable indicators, but the Sun/Jupiter conjunction of June 19th was quickly followed by a precipitous drop in the US stock market.

Jupiter is expansive and confident and encourages us to expand beyond our usual limitations, and in Gemini Jupiter  tends to be curious and seek constant input and change.  There have been few astrological factors to put limitations on the markets which have continued to rise despite there being no real change in the economic situation other than that of perception and a potential real estate mini-bubble.

Armed with this Sun/Jupiter confidence, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke announced that since the US economic situation was doing so well, the Fed would begin to pull back its bond purchase program known as “quantitative easing” which has pumped money into the markets and kept them artificially inflated.

Americans have short memories, but back in January 2008 when Pluto entered Capricorn, the sign of hard work and disciplined achievement of one’s goals, the “irrational exuberance” of the stock and housing markets came to a screeching halt.  Pluto is STILL in Capricorn, and under this influence reality takes a front seat.  The whole idea of propping up markets with manufactured money is unsustainable while Pluto is in Capricorn (through 2023).

Saturn, Capricorn’s ruler, has slowed down in preparation for its change of direction on July 8th when it will be in direct motion after a retrograde period.  That does bode well for the building a solid foundation upon which real growth can occur, especially during early July when Jupiter (optimism and expansion) and Saturn (hard work and building structures) harmonize in a trine aspect.  I would look to later in July when […]

Summer Solstice and a Super Full Moon

Capricorn Full Moon June 2013The Sun entered Cancer today, marking the Summer Solstice and the beginning of the astrological summer season.  The Sun has been transiting over Jupiter for the past week which generally brings about a more expansive and optimistic atmosphere.  With the entry of the Sun into Cancer, it separates from Jupiter and there is some potential that we will fall to earth in a serious reality check.

This fall will have a relatively soft landing, since Saturn (the planet that governs reality checks) forms a trine to the Cancer Sun and harmonizes with the Capricorn Moon, helping us to gain greater understanding if we think to look behind our disappointment.

The Capricorn Full Moon on June 23rd accentuates the closing of the door to unbridled exuberance, since Capricorn is ruled by Saturn and tends to be seriously practical and disdain flights of fantasy or cheerfulness that goes beyond reason.  At the Full Moon, the Cancer Sun opposes the Capricorn Moon and forces us to find balance between emotion (Cancer) and practical duty (Capricorn), between home life (Cancer) and achievement (Capricorn), between connection to our family or tribe (Cancer) and our duty to the world around us (Capricorn).  Cancer is itself ruled by the Moon, so the challenge here is to learn to keep the heart open while taking care of the business of every day life.

At this Full Moon there is a wide but still active connection to Uranus and Pluto, awakening (Uranus) and requiring depth and focus (Pluto).  When Pluto’s pressure to delve below the surface is tied to lunar symbology it often takes us into contact with our ancestry and our inherited psychological legacy.  The Moon is at perigee (closest to earth) which […]
