Sunday inspiration for Pluto turning direct

This beautiful writing from Rumi captures the essence of a major Pluto event that may occur in our lives.  Pluto does often act with violence, eliminating and clearing out the old and decaying patterns so that they can be replaced with fresh new growth that will inspire and bring joy.

A great trust in the wisdom of Universal cycles is required to surrender to this elimination and ripping away of things we thought we hold dear, and this kind of trust only comes with time.  But since we have no option under Pluto – we must surrender because there is no way to control the outcome – Pluto becomes the teacher and the bringer of that wisdom and our trust becomes deeper and more secure.

Far better things will take the place of whatever Pluto’s strong winds shake from your heart.

The “Freedom/Closeness” Dilemma in relationships

My new guilty television pleasure is the program “Breaking Pointe,” a reality show about dancers in a ballet company in Salt Lake City.  They ran last year’s season on BBC America which is where I found it, and then this year’s season ran on the CW network.

One of the featured dancers, Allison, is involved in a classic push me/pull you relationship with Rex, another of the dancers.  In this kind of relationship one partner is pushing to be closer and the other one is distancing – pushing away.  However what often happens is that the roles switch and the formerly distancing partner becomes the one who wants to be closer.

In the Allison/Rex dynamic, Allison was involved with another man, Jonathan.  Then she and Rex had an affair and she broke up with Jonathan.  Rex still wanted to be with her and she pushed him away.  Then she realized Jonathan was a jerk and now she wants to be with Rex.  Now Rex is saying, not so fast – I’m not so sure I want this.

Howard Sasportas and Liz Greene coined the term the “freedom/closeness” dilemma to describe the conflict between the basic need to attach and feel safe with another human being and the need to differentiate the Self and become more comfortable as an autonomous individual.  This is a process that begins in infancy but it can become distorted and corrupted in certain family situations.  But really, those of us with this dynamic were born with a prospensity towards this conflict, and this is evident in our birthcharts.

Pisces Full Moon, September 2013: Magic and Mundane come into balance

fairyThe Moon is full in Pisces on September 19th.  In the Full Moon the solar conscious principle is subsumed by the lunar instincts, and the light of the Moon is at its most powerful.  The Pisces Moon has the potential to take us more deeply into the inner reaches of our own hearts than ever before while the Virgo Sun demands that we find a way to root the mystical experience into a practical reality. Virgo and Pisces are in opposition (180 degrees) to each other.  The signs that are opposite each other are polarities – they are two sides of one coin.  Each has what the other lacks, and if we are able to find balance between them we can get off the seesaw of extremes and find greater integration.  Where Virgo is practical and grounded, Pisces is imaginative and mystical.  Pisces can have difficulty creating the order that Virgo craves, but Virgo often misses the magic that Pisces sees everywhere. In the Full Moon the lunar influence is more powerful, and in this Full Moon Pisces acts as a siren call to open the heart and allow magic to spill out and surround us with grace and beneficence. In the chart of this Full Moon, Mercury (regulating the mind and the way we communicate) is in an exact square (challenging aspect) to Jupiter (expansion, confidence and growth).  Since Jupiter is the traditional ruler of Pisces there is strong desire to expand and reach beyond the boundaries of the physical world. Musings on Venus in Scorpio and relationships

Lots of people are writing about Venus, which moved into Scorpio on September 11th.  Because I have Venus in Scorpio, and it’s squared by Pluto which is the modern ruler of Scorpio, making this a double whammy of Plutonian Venus energy, I feel I am somewhat the expert on the subject and not in a way that is particularly fun to talk about!

Scorpio has a traditional ruler (Mars) and a modern ruler (Pluto), and like all double-ruled signs it offers two roads of experience.  One is the reactive road of the lower octave (Mars), in which we struggle to squeeze the receptive, loving, harmonious qualities of Venus into the necessary aggression and fierce independence of Mars.  The Mars influence can also operate through the courageous (Mars) protection of those we love (Venus) such as the Jodie Foster quote in the photo to the left.

But it is the Pluto influence that gives Scorpio its transformative power.  Through Pluto we are forced into the Underworld of death and sexual abuse where we are required to give up the power of Ego and Selfhood and be baptized by an alchemical fire.  Ultimately we emerge from this darkness into a transformed world of magic and beauty, but in the Scorpio experience the outcome cannot be obtained without the trial.

This sort of intensity makes it difficult to approach human interaction with anything resembling superficiality or casual connection which can be exhausting for the partners of Scorpionic people.  But as one of those people myself, I like to think that the reward of personal transformation and the kernel of magic that nestles within the drama, ready to emerge at any moment, is worth it.

Saturn in Scorpio: Getting tough on sexual violence

Saturn in ScorpioSaturn entered Scorpio about a year ago and will take another year and a half or so to travel through that sign.  Scorpio is traditionally ruled by Mars and its modern ruler is Pluto, and these are the two planets that govern sexuality.  Mars deals with the physical drives including the sexual drive and energy, and Pluto addresses matters of intimacy and the “petit mort” of sexual surrender. Pluto is also fearless when it comes to the dark side of the human experience, and we often find rape and abusive behaviors under its banner, and Scorpio tends to be an investigator in areas of life where the more carefree signs might fear to venture.

In its role as Celestial Teacher, Saturn brings consequences and lessons in areas of life governed by the sign it travels through, and we have seen many instances in the news over the past year in which governmental bodies (Saturn) are getting tough on sexual violence (Scorpio) in their communities.

In North Carolina where I live UNC students filed a grievance with the federal government accusing the university of failing to adequately protect students from sexual assault or prosecuting these assaults.  The same thing occurred previously in Montana, resulting in a rewrite of rules that are becoming the standard for colleges across the country, and similar investigations are occurring everywhere, including Colorado, California, Pennsylvania, Tennessee.

In the US military support is growing for for prosecuting sexual assault in the military.  “The Pentagon estimates that there were 26,000 sexual assaults in the military last year, but only 302 prosecutions resulted from complaints.”  Those are appalling numbers.
