Astrology is not a science

Many people who think of themselves as scientists like to call astrology a “pseudoscience.”  Pseudoscience is defined as “a collection of beliefs or practices mistakenly regarded as being based on scientific method” but some writers go so far as to call some of these fields of study “fake sciences,” meaning they purport to be science but are not.  These theorists claim that because astrology is scientifically incorrect (planets don’t move backward and the Sun doesn’t orbit the earth) it is a fake science.

From what I can remember from high school science, the scientific method involves a series of testing with predictable results that are the same in every test.  I don’t think anyone can argue that astrology, in any form, can be thought of as passing scientific muster.

The practice of astrology has no rules, and there are countless branches and techniques that are completely different from each other.  Two exact natal charts can result in two totally different human beings who make different choices and have very different lives, and two individuals undergoing the exact same planetary transits will have unpredictable experiences.  However, this does not negate the fact that an astrological reading of a natal chart from a skilled astrology can be an accurate representation of the various factors of the human personality.

Recently about the political groups who most believe that astrology is scientific.  As with most such debunking articles, this one is based on who reads newspaper “horoscopes.”  I think most people understand that newspaper horoscopes are not astrology, so the entire premise of this study is flawed from the beginning.

Still, the study shows that more and more people believe in astrology which I think is encouraging and likely due to […]

Astrology at the Expo

Twice a year I do readings at our local Body Mind Spirit Expo in Raleigh.  Because these are mini-readings they are perfectly suited to people who are trying out different consultants and different modalities, and while I have many repeat clients I also have quite a few newbies who have never had an astrology reading.

Although I’ve been doing readings for many years, it’s still so exciting to read a chart for someone who is completely new to the art of REAL astrology.  Probably they already know their Sun signs, but when the door to the other planetary configurations opens and they see their psychological and emotional patterns revealed in a way that gives them greater understanding and acceptance, a light goes off that is really fun to see.

There is a general feeling of euphoria at this year’s February expo – a sense of greater optimism and readiness for change.  Over the past few years with the planetary dramas that we have seen unfolding, those changes have been somewhat wrenching and created real chaos in people’s lives.  A theme in yesterday’s readings was choice: that having been deconstructed we are now being given options for reconstructing our lives in new ways.

More readings today – if you’re in the Raleigh area come and see me at the show.

Planetary news this week: a Pisces trip through magic

Sun in PiscesThe Sun has entered into dreamy Pisces – the “celestial dustbin” of the zodiac.  In Pisces everything that exists in the world comes together in a swirl of magic to be released like fairy dust into the ethers.  The Piscean experience is that of transcendence – it urges us to transcend our ordinary lives of mundane details and find bliss in a joyful dream.  This experience can occur in an infinite number of ways – through losing ourselves in our relationships, an experience of Samadhi in meditation, a walk in the woods or a sunset, creating a beautiful piece of art. Pisces is ruled by Neptune, and having just entered Pisces the Sun will align with Neptune on the 23rd of February.  For the next few days creativity is at a peak and it becomes easier to channel the divine within us into a form that can create happiness not only for us but also for those around us. A trine from the Sun to the North Node of the Moon opens doorways that help us in our evolutionary journey.  This is a beneficial energy that will help us from falling into the Pisces trap of becoming lost in the “glamour” of the fairy dust under which we see only want we want to see and lose track of the physical world entirely. In the  meantime, this Pisces/Neptune magic can open the heart to Divine Love in a way that nothing else can, opening portals in your relationships for deeper connection, facilitating your art or creative drive, and deepening your connection to Universal Wisdom.

“Faeries, come take me out of this dull world, For I would ride with you upon the wind, Run on the top […]

Heart-opening Leo Full Moon for Valentine’s Day

Leo Full Moon

Tonight’s Full Moon offers a dramatic expression of the open heart, and not just because it’s Valentine’s Day.  This Full Moon is in Leo, the sign that is ruled by the Sun.  In medical astrology the Sun rules the physical heart, but there is also a generosity of spirit to Leo – a warmhearted openness to life and all of its complexities.  This generosity of Leo opens up the heart at this Full Moon and encourages a dramatic display of personal expression that is fueled by fire and the passion driven by a love of life itself.

All Full Moons contain a polarity between two opposing signs since the Sun in one sign is opposite the Moon in another. The solar conscious principle of the transpersonal sign Aquarius here opposes the lunar instincts of Leo – the inner child who longs to be recognized, admired and appreciated.

Saturn is the traditional ruler of Aquarius, and it represents contraction, hard work and isolation.  In this lunation (lunar event) it forms a challenging square aspect to both the Sun and the Moon – a double whammy of taciturn Saturn coldness.  This could bring sadness to those that are alone on Valentine’s Day – a day when it is easy to think that the entire world is in love and happier than we ourselves are.  Saturn brings a sensibility to the hype and fantasy surrounding this holiday which can bring feelings of deprivation no matter what our situation.   Saturn insists that we become anchored within ourselves to find balance between our needs for personal expression (Leo) and the distancing from the personal into the community of mankind (Aquarius) – between giving and receiving, between connection and solitude .

This Valentine’s Day […]

A change of direction: the lunar nodes change signs

Art by Igor Pogosyan

The Nodes of the Moon are not planets – they are purely mathematical points that show where the path of the Moon crosses the path of the Sun (called the “ecliptic”).  The North, or ascending, node acts as a signpost to take us into the future – it points the way for our soul’s evolutionary growth.  The South, or descending, node is a signpost from the past.  Through the South Node we release people, places and things which we carry with us that are no longer needed.

The North and South Nodes are always in opposite signs, reflecting the polarity of the astrological pantheon, and they change signs approximately every eighteen months or so.  On March 23 the mean calculation for the North Node will move from Scorpio into Libra.  Some astrologers use the “true node” which will change signs on February 19th.

One of many things astrologers argue over is whether to use the “mean node” or the “true node.”  Steven Forrest has written a which I can’t improve upon.  Steven says:

[T]he actual moment-to-moment position of the lunar nodes is quite twitchy. Essentially that is how the true node is calculated—although in reality most astrological computer do not take all of these effects fully into account. Even the “true” node is not really true. The bottom line is the calculated true node’s motion is eccentric. It can even sometimes go briefly Direct.

The mean node assumes the simpler view: that the Moon orbits the center of the Earth. The effect is to smooth everything out a bit.

In any case, when the lunar nodes change signs there is a shift in focus on a global […]
