Aries New Moon astrology and the April Grand Cross

Aries new moon grand cross

Today’s New Moon is in the cardinal sign of Aries – the first sign of the Spring season.  There is a sense of new beginnings – of pregnant anticipation.  Something  is about to burst forth, to blossom and the old is made new again.

The New Moon occurs today at 2:45 pm Eastern and falls at 9 degrees Aries.  Both the Sun and Moon link up with Uranus, the planet of revolution, encouraging us to shed the shackles of the past and the restrictions of our established patterns and routines so that we can be transformed by this new energy.

These three planets and lights in Aries form a square to Pluto, planet of destruction and regeneration. This pressure for change is not an invitation – it is a requirement.  Pluto will ensure that anything standing in our way will be decimated so that the force for change can work its magic with or without our cooperation.

Jupiter is involved here too – the “great benefic” with its super-confidence and gift of good fortune and opportunity, but here there is a challenge to surrender our ideologies and our need to be right.  The old gods are destroyed when Jupiter and Pluto go to war, and there are new gods to be discovered.

This is a hint to prepare us for the next few weeks which will bring us more of this intense conflicting energy that paves the way for a transformational future.  The energy will continue to intensify as Mars plays more of an active role, but for now the New Moon energy can inspire us with excitement and encourage us to follow the Aries archetype of adventure as we […]

The astrology of L’Wren Scott

Lwren ScottDear readers – do not despair, I will soon be bringing you soothing words to calm your fears over the upcoming Grand Cross that is causing tabloid news to shiver around the globe.  But meanwhile I have been fascinated with the personage that was L’Wren Scott who took her own life last week.

The birthchart of L’Wren Scott (born 4/28/1964 time unknown) shows someone who was born at the peak of the conjunction of Uranus to Pluto in 1964, with the Sun in Taurus.  The Uranus/Pluto conjunction presided over the huge social cataclysm that we now call “The Sixties” – individuals who were born between 1962 and 1968 carry this archetype in their charts and are driven to create social change and transformation.  Between 1964 and 1966 Saturn and Chiron opposed the Uranus/Pluto conjunction, and all of you born during those years have a certain degree of painful challenges (Saturn) and emotional wounds (Chiron) that require constant disruption and transformation (Uranus/Pluto).

What interests me about L’Wren is the difficulty she seems to have had establishing an identity of her own.  She was adopted into a Mormon family and then changed her name at age 18 when she began a career as a fashion model in Paris.  During her Saturn Return she moved to LA and became a PR rep for Prada and then a stylist to the stars.  Her chart is a lucky one, with the Sun conjunct both Mercury (intelligence) and Jupiter (good fortune), but the Sun makes an opposition to Neptune, the planet of mystical transcendence, illusion and delusion.

Neptune/Sun people find it difficult to figure out who they are, and worse, they are misperceived by others (see my earlier post on this topic).  L’Wren […]

Anger and heart disease

mars retrogradeConnections between anger and heart disease are nothing new, and a announces that anger can set off a heart attack.

Researchers combined data from nine studies of anger outbursts among patients who had had heart attacks, strokes and related problems. Most of the studies used a widely accepted anger assessment scale; one depended on a questionnaire administered to patients.

They found that in the two hours after an outburst of anger, the relative risk of angina and heart attack increased by nearly five times, while the risk of ischemic stroke and cardiac arrhythmia increased by more than three times. The .

One might read this and decide that squelching one’s anger is the best way to ward off heart disease, and that concerns me.  I have a bit of a specialty in healing what I call “Mars problems” – issues in the astrological chart where Mars, the planet of desire and need, is afflicted in some way and unable to find its best expression.  What I have seen (and I have to add a big disclaimer here that I have no medical training and this is not to be construed as medical advice) is that when people have Mars problems in the chart they are often more prone to medical events.  (See this article for more information on that subject.)

All emotions hold energy – whether that emotion is fear or grief, or the continuum of Mars emotions which begins with frustration, moves through anger and eventually becomes rage.  When we try to avoid feeling an emotion that begins within us, the energy of that emotion lacks an outlet and builds up internally […]

Where the heck have I been, and other musings

saturnA cardinal rule of blogging is to avoid apologizing when posts are few and far between.  But many of you have been with me since I began this blog in 2005, and I apologize for having abandoned those of you who rely on the wisdom of the planets to navigate a world that can often seem chaotic.  I know that this wisdom can be found elsewhere, but I frankly like being a mouthpiece for the planets and enjoy the camaraderie that my readership offers both myself and other seekers along the path.

I have never had a period like the past two weeks where I have been literally unable to write a word.  All of this happened as Saturn turned retrograde in an exact square to my third house Pluto.  Some of you will know that the third house deals with writing and communication, and with my natal Pluto (and Moon) there I not only need (Moon) to communicate, but that need can be pretty compulsive (Pluto) sometimes.  Hence the nearly daily posts over the past eight plus years!  But over the past few weeks I have felt that Saturn contraction like a heavy weight, keeping me from being able to write or communicate.

The past twelve months have been intense, and a part of me is spiritually exhausted.   I believe that in shutting the door to my writing Saturn also required that I spend some time walking my talk and releasing some of the stuck energy that I accumulated during these rough times.  Being Saturn, this involved routine and daily practice: exercise, yoga, meditation – turning within to examine my own role in the challenges that like everyone I face on a daily basis.

I’m starting to feel […]

Planetary news this week: Mars and Saturn change direction

Art from Deviant Art Art from Deviant Art

I am late with the Planetary Illuminations report this week, but you all may be feeling the influence of Mars turning retrograde on March 1st followed immediately by Saturn on the 2nd.

Planets don’t travel backwards, but because astrologers view the movement of the planets from our perspective on earth they sometimes appear to travel in reverse direction.  Before a planet changes direction its movement slows down to a crawl and they appear stationary in the sky at the time the change of direction actually occurs.

When a planet is stationary its influence is more powerful.  Mars only turns retrograde every couple of years and the fact that it is retracing its steps over the challenging dynamic square between Uranus and Pluto makes this a significant event.  I discussed this back in December when Mars entered the sign of Libra:

The archetype of Mars is the “God of War.”  This gives Mars dominion over the human quality of aggression and the emotion of rage, but it also helps us to define boundaries and defend ourselves. Mars has been called “the lesser malefic” but it is also the desire nature – the drive that gets us out of bed in the morning and instills excitement and eagerness to make something happen.  When Mars is repressed or afflicted in the natal chart it becomes more difficult to express, resulting in fatigue or health problems.

Mars is said to be in its detriment in Libra, meaning it is not very happy there.  Rather than be directly obnoxious, as Mars prefers to be, Mars in Libra covers its irritation and anger with a veneer of Libran polish so that it can be difficult to really see the […]
