Grand Cross News Roundup

tornadoThe planets have calmed down now, with Mercury moving into grounded Taurus and the Taurus New Moon tomorrow.  But the past few weeks have been a doozy.

  • I counted five stabbings in US high schools: Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Houston, Utah, Fort Lauderdale.
  • Tornadoes whipped through central and southern US states with several different outbreaks over the weekend with more coming today.
  • Mars (rage, impulsive behavior) setting off Uranus (recklessness, surprise) and Pluto (death and destruction) created havoc and an increase in accidents:
    • In Saudi Arabia there were the highest number of recorded accidents in a single day.
    • A ferry in South Korea capsized and the crew escaped, leaving passengers to die.
    • Sixteen sherpas, climbing accidents, were killed in an avalanche on Mount Everest.
    • There was a higher than normal number of plane, motorcycle and automobile crashes.

But the worst is behind us now, and just like the way the air is cleaner after a storm, once the debris from the past few weeks has settled and can be cleared away we will be left with a fresh start.

The astrology of Elizabeth Warren

Elizabeth Warren birth chartElizabeth Warren has gained fame over the past few years as a passionate defender of the economic rights of American citizens.  She has an enthusiastic following and talk grows daily of a presidential run – talk which is continually denied by Ms. Warren.

Elizabeth Warren was born on June 22, 1949 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  When I begin to work on an astrological profile I generally try to find a birth time and Astrotheme is often a good source for that.  Astrotheme scours the internet and other sources for accurate times, but sometimes they are not so accurate. Astrotheme cites a 1:51 pm birth time for Elizabeth Warren that seems to have originated with a rectification procedure .  Rectification is a process whereby life events are carefully considered and compared with the progressed chart to identify placement of the angles (the Midheaven and Ascendant) and thereby pinpoint a time of birth.  Rectification is not 100% reliable, and without a confirmed birth time I will not be looking at the houses or Ascendant or Midheaven.

Still, we can easily see where Ms. Warren’s radical fight for fairness for the common man originates in the chart.  Her Sun is in Cancer – a placement which I have found often denotes an individual who is painfully and personally sensitive to global pain and suffering, and her Sun conjoins Uranus, the planet of radical thought and behavior.  Sun/Uranus people march to their own drummer – in fact, they set the beat and it’s nearly always something unique and surprising.

Sun/Uranus people seek fairness and liberty.  Although Ms. Warren ran for office as a Democrat, she has voted for both parties saying that neither party deserves to dominate.

In addition, her […]

Who will care for the poor in the Aquarian Age?

Aquarian AgeNo one can really tell when the Age of Aquarius begins.  This is a 2160 year cycle, and it doesn’t begin or end on a particular date.  But I believe that we are in the transition period between the Age of Pisces and the Age of Aquarius.

The spread of Christianity dominated the Age of Pisces, and while there have been some horrific consequences as a result (think the brutality of the Crusades, the annihilation of Native Americans and other indigenous groups, etc.) it has primarily been Christian and other religious groups that have cared for the poor.

One of the rulers of Pisces is Jupiter, and Jupiter rules religion, the construct of meaning that we create for ourselves and share with others.  During the Age of Pisces the ideology of shared ideas has prevailed, and for a person to be without religion was unthinkable.

As we move into the age of Aquarius, ruled by Saturn traditionally and Uranus as modern ruler, there is more of a focus on individual rights and liberties and perhaps less compassion that is one of the higher manifestations of the Piscean archetype.  While Aquarius is all about fairness and justice for everyone, there is less of a sense of empathy and more of a fervor for liberty which we can certainly observe in today’s political landscape.  Aquarius loves mankind in general but finds it more difficult to be emotionally connected, hence the image I chose for this article.

Two years ago I wrote an article entitled “Will religion survive the Aquarian Age?”

There is no doubt that the presence of religion in our lives is changing, especially in the United States which, with Jupiter-ruled Sagittarius rising and Jupiter conjunct the Sun in the […]

Astrology today: Grand Cross update, April 21 2014

april grand cross

In April, a big lineup of planets in cardinal signs of action have created stress and tension with opportunities for release and transformation.  Transformation is not always easy, and the tension of the grand cross can bring conflict and crisis.  Sometimes the intensity is more than certain individuals can bear, and we see this play out in the news.

Mars, planet of aggression, has been traveling retrograde where it is dredging up old resentments and because it is traveling so slowly, its influence is stronger and lasts for a longer period of time.

Jupiter, planet of expansion and opportunity, is in Cancer where it is opening the heart and revealing our emotional sensitivity.

We are also dealing with Pluto, planet of death and rebirth, in Capricorn, an earth sign.  I have long predicted that when Pluto entered Capricorn we would see an abundance of earthquakes and earth changes, especially when Pluto aligned in a square (90 degree) aspect to Uranus.  Uranus is the planet that causes disruption and awakens change.

Yesterday the Moon entered the already tense Grand Cross, making a total of five planets and luminaries locked in this tight alignment.  Yet one day later, the world is still turning on its axis and not much has changed.

We have had difficult planetary alignments since 2008, and most intensively since 2011.  Many of us are becoming accustomed to this new degree of intensity, so a few days of heightened magnetism does not cause great distress.  It is generally at the beginning of these periods, when the new energies are just beginning to enter our consciousness, that we find them most difficult to manage.

I am not inclined to jump on the bandwagon of doom and gloom that […]

Happy Resurrection Holiday

dying resurrected godThis is a repost from 2010.  You might also enjoy my podcast

I have always found it interesting that the timing Christian holiday of Easter is based on the lunar cycle and the Spring Equinox.  The holiday that the Christian world celebrates as Easter retains much of its pagan roots as a fertility festival and a time of balance as the days and nights (in the northern hemispheres) are of equal length. Even the name “Easter” is taken from the Saxon fertility goddess Ostara or Eostre, who is related to Astarte in ancient Babylon and Ashtoreth in ancient Israel.  And the Easter bunny is, of course, an old pagan symbol of fertility.

The resurrection story of Jesus is virtually identical to the tale of the resurrection of the Phrygian god Attis who preceded him:  According to Gerald Berry’s Religions of the World: The Record of Man’s Religious Faiths Primitive rites, Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, Christianity and others, written in 1965, “About 200 B.C. mystery cults began to appear in Rome just as they had earlier in Greece. Most notable was the Cybele cult centered on Vatican hill …Associated with the Cybele cult was that of her lover, Attis (the older Tammuz, Osiris, Dionysus, or Orpheus under a new name). He was a god of ever-reviving vegetation. Born of a virgin, he died and was reborn annually. The festival began as a day of blood on Black Friday and culminated after three days in a day of rejoicing over the resurrection.”

Another interesting aspect to the timing of Easter is its combination of the solar and lunar calendar, taking place as it does on the first Sunday following the 14th day of the lunar month following the Equinox.  The […]
