Pluto in Capricorn – can Google conquer death?

Google's anti-death projectBefore Pluto’s discovery bestowed on him the title of the Lord of Death, that role was occupied by the planet Saturn.  Pluto’s role in the concept of death has to do with the surrender of life as we know it and the regeneration of something else in its place.  Saturn forces us to deal with the difficult questions and the hard aspects of life, reminding us that life is short and that death is at the door.

Saturn is the ruler of the sign Capricorn, and since 2008 Pluto has been traveling through Capricorn and will continue to do so until 2023 when it will move into Aquarius.  Pluto in Capricorn initiated the financial contraction that brought about the Great Recession of the past few years (read more about Pluto in Capricorn here).

Pluto tends to create transformation in the areas of life governed by the sign it travels in, so Pluto’s journey through Capricorn has already begun to transform the way we handle the fact of death in our world.  Because it is Capricorn, an earth sign of practicality and governance of the material world, it is the very fact of death itself that is undergoing a transformation.

Under Pluto in Capricorn we have seen the idea of zombies and vampires take hold in the popular imagination – creatures that straddle the line between life and death.

Now Google has launched a company called Calico dedicated to research into the causes of aging and ways in which the human lifespan can be extended in an effort to “.”  As an astrologer this is interesting because Pluto will leave Capricorn for the technology sign Aquarius in 2023, and by then technology and human existence […]

In which Mars changes course and healing is possible

Mars has been traveling retrograde since March 1st, and on the 17th it will change direction again.  Planets don’t really orbit backwards, but astrologers observe the motion of the planets from our perspective on earth and watch as they periodically APPEAR to move backwards.  A retrograde planet works underground, causing us to look backwards and repair the past – retrogrades offer us a Mulligan – a do-over if you will.

Mars will turn direct on May 19th, and for the past week or two it has been at a virtual standstill.  We call this “stationary,” and when a plant appears stationary in the sky its influence is at a peak.  Mars energizes us and motivates us to follow our dreams and desires – when thwarted it turns that energy into anger and ultimately rage.  When Mars is stationary it can be difficult to motivate ourselves and we may feel that we are stuck.  Just be patient: in another week the wheels will begin rolling again and forward movement will become easier.

At the same time we have a Grand Trine of planets that smooths all of the rough edges and assists us as we find our ways out of the difficult waters of the past few months.  Jupiter (abundance and opportunity) is exactly trine Chiron, opening pathways to the healing process which ultimate liberates us from the bondage of our wounds (Chiron) and helps us to gain greater realization and wisdom.   Later in the month, Jupiter will trine Saturn, forging stability and linking an optimistic viewpoint (Jupiter) with the ability to work hard and create solid structures (Saturn) – a combination that is the key to successfully navigating life’s joys and challenges.

Unfortunately, supportive planetary events don’t do all […]

The astrology of George Clooney’s engagement

George clooney astrology engaged

The world’s most eligible bachelor is off the market – George Clooney has renounced his claim that he will never marry again and has become engaged to Amal Alamuddin, British human rights attorney.

George’s Sun is in Taurus, the sign of earthly delights, stability, security. Taureans crave a peaceful and serene environment and typically do not like change, but because his Sun is conjunct Mercury (the messenger god and ruler of communication and information), there is a part of him that will also crave a variety of experiences. His Moon, representing our need for emotional security, is in Capricorn and it is conjunct Saturn, the planet that rules Capricorn. This is what we astrologers call a “double whammy,” indicating that the Saturn/Capricorn principle of hard work and solitude is fused with his emotional needs. Saturn/Moon people need lots of alone time–often in their childhood they can be extremely lonely and unable to connect, and in later years this becomes a need for solitude in order to refresh one’s sense of safety.

Mars (personal drive and will) is in Leo in George’s chart, and this is where we find his prankster nature and love of practical jokes for which he is well known. Venus (relating to others) is in Aries, showing that George likes to take the lead in relationships. He in fact has been quoted as saying that he likes to be the one that pursues women, and not the other way around. With Mars and Venus both in fire signs (Leo and Aries), he has a natural exuberance. But I suspect very few people are able to get close to George because of the […]

Mars and the Scorpio Full Moon

Scorpio Full MoonNow that the Grand Cross is beginning to unwind there is a bit more movement and a sense of increased possibilities rather than that feeling of being stuck in crisis that so many of us have had over the past few months.

Mars is at a virtual standstill, so if it (at 9-10 degrees Libra) is hitting a sensitive point in your chart or the charts of those around you, there could still be some eruptions as frustrations build to a peak and find release.

Mars is the traditional ruler of Scorpio, and we have a Scorpio Full Moon coming up on May 14th so the influence of Mars is increased exponentially.  Mars of course was the god of war, and nobody really likes war except for the most aggressive of warriors.  And it’s true that Mars inspires aggression and anger, but it also creates enthusiasm and motivates and inspires us.

Because Mars is still blocked by the other planets of the Grand Cross its expression is not as complete as it might otherwise be which means some conscious effort is required to unlock it so that we can utilize it well rather than become frustrated by it.  Essentially that means moving our bodies and releasing any stuck energy through physical activity wherever possible.  If we feel fatigued that often means that Mars is not being able to fire its energy through the physical body, and moving our body through walking, dance, yoga, or any other way that we enjoy will help to release the blocks so that that energy can move freely and inspire and motivate.

Under the Scorpio Full Moon the passion of Mars will become even more pronounced, but that passion may be more internalized as […]

A window of history

Great ConjunctionAstrologer Martin Davis posted this on Facebook:

Recent archeology places the Buddha’s birth at about 600 BC [or BCE]; Confucius’ birth is thought to be about 550 BC; Pythagoras’ birth time is currently estimated at 570BC, Lao Tzu at about 600 BC. What do these dates have in common?

In 577 BC there was a Great Conjunction [and I mean Great!] with the outer planets of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto running neck and neck between 10* to 13* Taurus.

I had never read this before and a brief internet search uncovered no previous articles on the subject so naturally I was fascinated.

Unlike the visible, or traditional planets and luminaries (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn) which preside over matters of the personality and personal existence, the outer planets act as transformational forces which inspire and assist in crisis and evolution.

Any conjunction ) aspect of outer planets brings about tremendous global upheaval and change and introduces a new element of human consciousness. Conjunctions correlate to the New Moon phase of the lunar cycle in which the Sun and Moon align and birth a new energy into the world.  Conjunctions of Neptune and Pluto, the two slowest moving planets (from our perspective on Earth)  occur about every 500 years.

There have been great teachers throughout time, but at no other time in history did so many great philosophers and spiritual sages incarnate within a century.

The outer planets weren’t discovered until the last few hundred years, so it is interesting to think that their influence could have been at work during this pre-discovery era.
