Mars in Scorpio, 2014

Art by Artemesia Dark

Mars went into Scorpio just before the New Moon, and will remain in Scorpio until mid-September.

Mars is the traditional ruler of Scorpio (as well as Aries), and when Pluto was discovered it was assigned as co-ruler of Scorpio.  Mars is the planet of war, and its dominion is aggression, passion, drive and desire.  For that reason it rules the pure physical desire of sexuality.  In Scorpio, it takes on an added emotional depth and intensity and a desire that is transformed from the purely physical to an intense need to lose oneself and become transformed in the process.  Like the Phoenix which is one of Scorpio’s symbols, the fire becomes so focused and burns so powerfully that we are turned to dust, and emerge anew from the rubble.

I consider Pluto to be the “higher octave” of Mars – where Mars rules the expression of the individual Will, Pluto acts as the will of the higher self – guiding and creating transformation in spite of what our own personal desires may be.  Usually after an intense Pluto transit we recognize that the changes that occurred during that time were really for our benefit and probably not something that we would have chosen for ourselves.  Like when we are fired from a job and then realize we were miserable and that freed us to find something better.  Or when we have a terrible accident and discover a great gift or talent as a result.

Scorpio is passionate and intense and has little patience for superficiality.  As a water sign it is concerned with the realm of feelings, but the fire of Mars adds the passion and ability to cut through fear […]

Magic and Happiness catch fire at the Leo New Moon

Leo New Moon I found this image on a free wallpaper site.  If this is your art, please be sure to let me know.

The Moon is new in Leo on the 26th of July, fusing the Sun and the Moon in the sign that opens the heart and encourages us to find our own best expression.  Consciousness becomes alive under the sign of Leo, and our sense of self is highlighted and encouraged to flower.

Both the Sun and Moon align with Leo at this time, and Jupiter has newly entered Leo.  That sense of heart-opening and a continually expanding thirst for joy is fresh and new now – perfect for this New Moon.

Saturn is still wrapped in a harmonious embrace with Chiron, helping us to give structure and order (Saturn) to our quest for healing and wisdom (Chiron).  This aspect has underpinned the challenges of the past few months and assisted in our developing greater understanding and releasing the wounds of the past.

Mars has just entered Scorpio and square the New Moon in a 90 degree aspect of tension and passion, demanding that we let go to the dynamic impulses that may seem untamed or impractical.  Mars is the traditional ruler of Scorpio and is very happy in that passionately intense sign where it no longer has to be pleasant and polite as it has been these past many months in Libra.  However, that Mars is also square to Jupiter, and when the god of war (Mars) faces off against the king of the gods (Jupiter) things can get a bit testy.  Anger, desire, inspiration and motivation – all Mars traits – are expanded during this time and we may feel reckless and willful.  Just go with the flow, as long […]

Pallas and John Travolta news

Homosexuality is not what it used to be.  Half a century ago, gay men and women hid their affiliation in a closely guarded cloak of secrecy.  In today’s Aquarian world where even in the US twenty states plus the District of Columbia now permit gay marriage, more and more well-known people are coming out of the closet, including even football players. But not John Travolta or Tom Cruise.  Both of these men, both Scientologists, interestingly enough, have struggled through their entire careers to keep the G word from erupting into their carefully crafted public persona.  For John Travolta, this wall between public and private will soon collapse after  that his former pilot has the right to tell the story of their gay affair. After studying astrology for 30 years, the asteroids are finally beginning to talk to me and one of the ones who is speaking up is Pallas (sometimes also called Pallas Athena since Athena was the Greek name for the same goddess).  Pallas is often prominent in the charts of my gay clients, particularly the ones who identify as transgender.  Pallas was a female goddess, but she sprang out of the head of her father, Jupiter, so there is an asexual quality to her power.  Or more accurately, an ability to move easily between genders. In John Travolta’s chart, Pallas is exactly opposite the Sun.  This is a very powerful aspect that challenges his sense of Self (Sun).  Pallas is about six degrees away from an exact conjunction to Pluto in the chart, suggesting that there is a compulsive (Pluto) quality to this tension.  Pluto of course is also opposite the Sun, […]

John Oliver proves that Sagittarius is rising in the US chart

There is a big debate among astrologers about the rising sign of the US chart.  I use the “Sibley” chart, named after Ebenezer Sibley who created it, and has Sagittarius rising on the ascendant.  Michael Wolfstar O’Reilly insists that in the chart because the power that America wields is reflected in the Scorpio archetype, and because the symbolic Eagle is also tied into Scorpio.  In this article he also explains how the Gemini rising chart came about.

Michael and I have had some spirited debates on the subject.  Now John Oliver has put that debate to rest.

The ascendant is the persona – it reflects the way we see ourselves, the lens through which our experiences are filtered, and how we are seen by others.   Sagittarius is the sign of optimism, faith and religion, and it’s easy to see how the American persona fits under that umbrella.  No other country is such driven by religion and faith – and no other country is as optimistic and expansive as the US.  Sagittarius types are typically open and friendly, and Americans are seen the world over as having big friendly personalities (often TOO friendly for some more conservative nationalities).  But it’s American optimism that is probably the single biggest quality that is identified with the American persona.

I love John Oliver and listen religiously to his podcast “The Bugle” which sadly is on hiatus because of Oliver’s new status as major media star.  If you haven’t seen his HBO program “Last Week Tonight” you really owe it to yourself to try it.  I heard Oliver say in his podcast that America is relentlessly optimistic to the point of ridiculousness.  In fact, he said, “Optimism is America’s kryptonite.”

More reader advice: the Pluto square Pluto transit

Pluto square plutoLynn, per your recent post you wrote: “Pluto transits can be devastating periods of loss, but they can also be times when we discover our latent strengths and emerge into great periods of personal power as we see here.” I currently am experiencing Pluto conjunct my Ascendant and Pluto square Pluto transits, both lasting through about the end of this year. I just entered into a major dispute with a colleague that may turn into a legal battle. What should I look at in my chart for signs of where things are headed?

Pluto transits are some of the most intense experiences possible for a human being.  When we are in the middle of them we sometimes feel that everything in our life is being ripped from us and that our foundations are being stripped away.  But at its core, Pluto is about empowerment – Pluto’s role is to help – ok yes, to force – us to let go of anything in our life that is not functioning so that we can emerge as truer versions of ourselves.

For this reader, Pluto squares the Capricorn Ascendant.  This alone tells us that she is on a journey of  transformation – of letting go of previous versions of herself and emerging anew.  The Ascendant represents our very persona and the way in which we live our life, and Pluto in a strong square (90 degrees) configuration to the ascendant suggests that she may struggle with issues of power and control.   The Capricorn Ascendant is well suited for Pluto contacts because there is a willingness to work hard and embrace whatever challenges are thrown her way.  She also has a Scorpio Moon, which is ruled by Pluto, so she is no […]
