I will be writing a separate article for the Full Moon Eclipse coming up on April 4th, but here is a synopsis of the major events for the month of April.

Although Uranus and Pluto are beginning to separate from the intensity of their challenging square, soothing the intensity of the push for change of the past five years, the Eclipse on April 4th will trigger these two monsters of enforced transformation one more time.

Two planets change direction this month;  Jupiter turns direct on April 8th and Pluto turns retrograde on the 16th. Both planets have slowed down to a crawl (a “station”) in preparation for its change of direction.  When a planet is stationary its influence becomes more powerful and this will be particularly true if Pluto is affecting your own chart right now.  As Lord of the Underground Pluto forces our attention into areas where we might otherwise not care to venture – the dark underground of the psyche, of emotions, of secrets.  Pluto demands that we surrender those aspects of our life which we know we have outgrown, and if we don’t follow his instructions he can become rather ruthless. Stationary Jupiter has a milder effect, especially when the experience occurs under a Pluto influence.

Still – the planetary intensity of the past few months is beginning to lessen and April brings mostly smaller cycles of the faster moving planets as we pick up the pieces of our lives after the tornado of the Uranus/Pluto square which has created so much upheaval […]

Sao Paulo: harbinger of water wars

water warsOne of the world’s largest cities is in an unprecedented water crisis.  Sao Paulo, South America’s largest city and the twelfth largest city in the world, is expected to run out of water by June of 2015.  Much of the drought in Brazil is due to the deforestation of the Amazon which increases the levels of heat and reduces rainwater.

Aside from air, living things most need water to survive.  When water disappears, the wealthy are able to purchase water such as when billionaires paid millions of dollars to import water to their Montecito California estates.

California is in what is being called the worst drought in a millenium.  Climate change has reduced the amount of snowpack melt in the mountains which in the past has served to irrigate the farms that provide fresh produce to the rest of the world.  To stave off “desertification” from the ground at a faster pace than it can recharge.

A drought emergency has been declared in thirteen counties in Oregon.  California and Arizona are battling over access to water from the Colorado River.  Israel is cutting off access to water in its ongoing war against the Palestinians.  Unprecedented growth in both China and India is causing tensions over the damming of rivers that provide water to both countries.

over the past three millenia provide an interesting history of conflicts over water.  It’s interesting to note the acceleration of conflict over water beginning in 2002, just before Uranus entered Pisces, the sign associated with the ocean.  Uranus is dry by nature – it rules electricity and lightning storms as well as thunder and radical rebellious […]

The astrology of Andreas Lubitz, suicide co-pilot

Andreas Lubitz astrologyRecent news reports reveal that the copilot in the recent crash of a Germanwings airliner had locked the pilot out of the cockpit and steered the plane into a mountain, killing himself and 149 other people, leaving the rest of humanity mystified.  Those who knew him described him as friendly, polite, quiet – something we often hear in these situations.

A look at the astrological chart of an individual can often provide an explanation for why someone behaves in a certain way.  It should never be taken as an excuse.  There are plenty of people with the same planetary configurations that this gentleman had who would never have flown a plane full of passengers into the Alps.  I present this analysis in order to educate about the workings of the planets – not to excuse the actions of the copilot.

Andreas Lubitz (born December 18, 1987, time and place unknown) has several difficult and painful combinations of planets in his chart.  Born with the Sun in Sagittarius, typically a freedom-loving expansive personality, his Sun was flanked by Saturn (restriction) and Uranus (rebellion) and opposed by Chiron (wounding and healing).  The stressful opposition (180 degree aspect) of Chiron to the Saturn/Sun/Uranus combination shows an individual who has come into this life with a predisposition towards emotional sensitivity and probably with a great deal of psychological wounding.

Strong Chiron contacts such as this often result in depression because one must go THROUGH the wounds in order to heal and ultimately become free of the emotional pain.  Some personality types are better suited to the kind of introspection and psychological work required to heal Chironic wounds.  Sagittarius does not care for that kind of emotional work and often responds by running away from it.

The Sagittarius […]

Astrology in my world: Saying goodbye to Amber

AmberThis week I had to send my beloved dog Amber into the light so it’s been difficult for me to write.  She was diagnosed with cancer about two weeks ago and we had been giving doggie hospice care until Tuesday when we said goodbye.

I usually look for Pluto or Jupiter where death is involved, and often in an emotionally intense time such as this has been I would expect to find Pluto and in fact my progressed Moon is within range of a challenging square to Pluto in my natal chart.  But even more significantly, that progressed Moon, my heart and soul’s expression, is in a strong square aspect to the South Node in my natal chart.  The South Node has to do with the release of something from the past in order to prepare us to move forward towards our future destiny.

We found Amber in a magical way.  When my old golden dog died years ago I felt a burning need to get another dog and called to volunteer for the Golden Retriever rescue organization.  It just so happened that it was Christmas and they desperately needed a foster home for a five month old puppy over the holidays.  Rich didn’t want to get another dog yet but I persisted, and since it was just for a week he relented.  Needless to say, when the week was up we didn’t want to let her go and she spent another fourteen wonderful years with us.

The passing of Amber coincided with an exact square from the asteroid Pallas to the Sun in my progressed chart.   is an astrologer who has taught me a great deal about the progressed chart (the evolution of the chart through the passage […]

New Moon at the Spring Equinox! Time for a fresh start

New Moon Aries Equinox

The Aries New Moon on March 20th at 6:45 pm Eastern time occurs at the Aries Point – the zero degree of Aries that marks the beginning of the entire zodiac.  For the northern hemisphere, this marks the first day of spring (you Aussies and Kiwis, and anyone living in Antarctica, may want to read my earlier article about astrology in the southern hemisphere here).

The Aries Point gets a special mention in astrological literature.  Kim Falconer , “the AP represents a movement (cardinal) from an inner quality to an outer manifestation. It orients us towards the world at large—society, public events and all relationships propelled from the individual to the collective.”

The sign of Aries is itself the beginning of manifestation in the world – the point of initiation and assertive dynamic experiences that push us into the world itself.  Any New Moon marks a new beginning – the beginning of a new lunar cycle that wipes the slate clean and provides an opportunity to create something new in our lives.  Any Aries New Moon adds another layer of excitement and Marsy energy to stoke the fires and energize that creation.

A New Moon at the Aries Point is an explosion of fresh new potent creative enthusiasm that can provide the motivation we need to begin something anew.  The challenging square (90 degree aspect) between Uranus and Pluto is still very tight, the two planets are just 9 minutes apart, so the adjustment is not easy.  Uranus breaks apart the old way and leaves us to put together the pieces.  Pluto assists with the destruction and reminds us who we really are at our core so that when […]
