Happy Samhain/Hallowe’en/Day of the Dead!

Those who decry Hallowe’en as a pagan holiday are, of course, correct!  In medieval Europe the pagan (country) people celebrated the the midpoint of the fixed signs as periods of power.  These times correspond to the fixed signs of Aquarius (Brigid in February), Taurus (Beltane in May), Leo (Lugh in August) and Samhain (pronounced Sow’en) in November for Scorpio.  These times exactly between the solstices and equinoxes, at the 15% point of the fixed signs, and are called the “cross-quarter” days.
At Samhain it is said that the veils between the worlds grow thin, and it becomes easier to communicate with the souls of loved ones who have passed on.  They are also more easily able to offer advice, and divination is a key part of Samhain festivals even today.  Samhain marks the beginning of the dark half of the year, after the balance of light and dark at the equinox.
The actual festival of Samhain this year is November 7th because this is when the Sun reaches 15 degrees Scorpio.  The festival of Hallowe’en (All Hallows Eve) corresponds to All Saints Day in the Catholic church which celebrates the dead, but only those who have been beatified.  The rest of the dead are celebrated on All Souls Day on November 2.
In Latin America there is a similar festival called the Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos which corresponds to the Catholic festivals.  Similar festivals are held in Spain and in Brazil, and presumably derived from the adaptation by the Catholic Church of the Samhain festival.
Astrologically, the entry of the Sun into Scorpio in the northern hemispheres marks the return of the dark time, where we are drawn into the darkness of our own psyche to […]

Seeking comfort and healing under the Taurus Full Moon October 27th

Taurus Full Moon October 2015

When the Moon is full and brightest in the sky, it is always opposite the Sun, meaning the Moon and Sun are in opposite signs.  Signs in oppositions are polarities – there is a tension between the energies and a need to find balance.

Normally the Solar energy is more powerful than the Lunar.  The Moon moves more quickly, and its influence tends to be fleeting.  But at the fulfillment of the lunar cycle, when the waxing portion of the cycle is complete and the waning portion is about to begin, the Moon is at her most glorious and her influence is most potent.

The Taurus Full Moon on October 27th seeks comfort in the physical world – it is a sign that fully appreciates the sensory experiences that can be enjoyed through life in a body. as well as security through financial stability and a safe expectation that one day will follow another without too many surprises.  The Taurean need for peacefulness and balance is opposed by the Scorpio Sun which demands an added layer of probing and emotional intensity.  Both Taurus and Scorpio are fixed signs – they create power through perseverance.  But Taurus is ruled by Venus and Scorpio by Mars – and under the Taurus Full Moon the Venusian influence of love and harmony must work through the Martian focus on desire and motivation in order to find true balance.

In this Full Moon a triple conjunction from both Mars (energy), Venus (relating) and Jupiter (confidence and good fortune) are embedded in this chart which is generally very positive since the planetary rulers of the Full Moon (Mars and Venus) are aligned with Jupiter’s supreme beneficence and good […]

Sexuality in the Birthchart

sex and astrologyAs with most things in life, sexuality is a complex creature with multiple layers of experience, and that complexity is mirrored in the variety of sexual expressions that we see in the astrological chart.  The sexual experience encompasses a wide variety of motivations and feelings and the astrological signatures for these feelings help us to understand more about how we approach sexuality in our own life.

Typically, astrologers look to Mars for the expression of the sexual drive. Mars rules our drive and desire, and therefore it rules sexual desire along with our desire for ice cream or a new car.  Any desire is fueled by the energy of Mars to activate something in the individual, and sexuality is no exception.

Mars also describes the way we pursue what we want; it shows what kind of sexuality we prefer and how we go about attracting a partner.  The placement and aspects of Mars describe the sexual techniques and feelings that are most comfortable to us.  For example, an airy Mars is more likely to be stimulated by the energy of sex, or to be drawn to sexual fantasies and ideas.  An earthy Mars will require lots of physical contact.  Watery Mars prefers a powerful emotional content to the sexual experience, and fiery Mars is all about desire and the scratching of an itch.  The aspects that other planets make to Mars help to color the sexual experience as well.  Saturn conjunct Mars may inhibit our sexuality; Jupiter square Mars could signify a large number of sexual conquests.

Mars is the ancient ruler of Scorpio, and Scorpio is well-known for […]

The astrological quandary of new planet discoveries

Each time a new planet has been discovered, it has opened a new doorway in the field of astrology.  For thousands of years the visible planets told the entire astrological story, and life was considered to a march towards one inevitable destiny.  The planetary story of the natal chart was either exalted or debilitated, and one was forced to resign oneself to fate.

Beginning in the late 18th century with the discovery of Uranus, the astrological landscape began to change.  A flurry of revolutionary ideologies and a drive towards individuality, the hallmarks of the Uranian influence, spread like wildfire around the world.  Neptune’s discovery in the 19th century led to an increase of spiritual and mystical thought (as opposed to the religious dogma of the church state that was the primary governing force throughout the second millenium of the common era.  Pluto’s entry into the pantheon in 1930 opened the doorway for the great psychological teachers of our time (Freud and Jung) and oversaw the development of the atomic and hydrogen bombs that were later used annhilate a large part of Japan (Pluto rules the underworld of the psyche as well as the process of destruction and regeneration).

Between 1801 and 1804 the four commonly used asteroids (Ceres, Pallas, Juno, Vesta) were discovered, although they were not included in the astrological pantheon until the early 1970s.   Chiron’s discovery in late 1977 was an intriguing event for astrologers because of the difficulty in identifying whether Chiron was an asteroid, a comet, or a small planet (read more about that here) and for many years astrologers grouped Chiron together with the other asteroids although astronomers classified Chiron as one of the Centaur minor planets.

Beginning in […]

Sparkling Libra New Moon with a Uranian twist

Tarot Justice by Art Magic

The New Moon in Libra on October 12th-13th invites us to find our own peaceful center within where true equanimity will aid us in rebalancing those areas of our life which are under stress or out of whack.  Libra is the sign of balance, symbolized by the scales of justice.  Under the influence of Libra we may find ourselves swinging from one extreme to another as we attempt to achieve a neutral point that will take us back to the equilibrium that comes from being truly in balance with our own emotions and drives.

Like all New Moons, this Libra lunation marks the beginning of a new lunar cycle.  Intentions that are set now will make their mark throughout the next 28 days or so.  With the energy of the Sun and Moon working together, the yang solar influence fuses with the yin lunar receptivity and acts as a powerful symbol of the yearning for balance which is so important under Libra.

Uranus, planet of radical change and electrical impulses, is poised in a tense opposition to the New Moon which will counterbalance that Libran inner harmony.  While we find that center of peace within us, we will be challenged by Uranus to step out of our comfort zone and dare to open our minds to a new reality or a new way of thinking about our present one.

Under the Libra influence, everything around us becomes a mirror reflection of our inner world, and every action demands an equal reaction.  It’s important to understand the interconnectedness between what we experience within, and what we draw into our lives from the outside.  This New Moon can aid in this understanding and facilitate our ability to alchemize every […]
