Happy Chinese New Year! It’s the Year of the Rooster

63000149 - chinese new year backgroundI don’t know much about Chinese astrology, but I do know it’s more involved than just assigning an animal totem to everyone born in the same lunar year.  I found which used my day and year as well as time to calculate a few more details about my signs in the Chinese system.  I’ve always known I was born under the year of the Dragon, which sounds very cool until I discover that I’m actually a white rabbit born in the year of the Dragon.  Not quite so impressive!  I was unable to find any site that explains what the white rabbit means, but the “rise and fall of your life” suggests that my best years will be between ages 60 and 80 so that’s encouraging.

But I digress! The Year of the Rooster (which apparently is gender neutral in the Chinese language) could bring these qualities according to :

The Rooster, the tenth Chinese zodiac sign, gives the year that just begins some of the characteristics of the bird it has as a symbol: ambition, pride, the desire to be admired, punctuality, courage, passion and a well-developed disposition for love and seduction. At the same time, during the year that has just started, an increase in enthusiasm, perseverance and auto-control will be felt. The relationships between people will be under the sign of great honesty.

We will all prove to have more passion in life, especially regarding work, where we will not hesitate to roll up our sleeves in order to reach our objectives. “Always higher, always going on” is the motto of the Rooster and it will inspire all of us. Braver than usually, we […]

Mars transiting through Aries – Harness the power of the “Id”

Mars in Aries

Mars is the planet of desire and need – it is the planet associated with the “Id” in psychological theory – “the part of the mind in which innate instinctive impulses and primary processes are manifest.”  The Id makes no value judgments – it is pure desire and instinct, and so is Mars.  Freud didn’t care much for the Id – he saw it as a “cauldron of passions” that needed to be tempered by the moderating forces of the Ego and Superego.

The instinct for self-preservation is a critical one for the survival of a human individual, and just like the Id, Mars acts solely to preserve the Self and to gratify desire.  Mars is particularly strong when in the sign of Aries, and Mars just entered Aries today (January 28, 2017).  While in Aries, Mars is at its most potent and the aggressive force is permitted full expression, unhampered by the niceties of signs like Libra or Pisces, by practical considerations such as Capricorn and Taurus would exercise, or by reason and intellectual processing such as Gemini and Aquarius would instigate.  It is pure, unadulterated need and drive.

When this basic force of need is thwarted, frustration is the result.  A certain amount of frustration leads to anger, and chronic anger leads to chronic rage and health problems.  A healthy Mars is, in my view, very important for the human ecosystem to function properly and nowhere is it as healthy as it is in its own sign of Aries.

Mars will remain in Aries through March 9, 2017.  If you have had trouble motivating yourself recently, this infusion of pure raw energy can help you.  There will be more action […]

Aquarius New Moon January 27: Time for a new perspective

Aquarius new moon 2017The New Moon in Aquarius occurs on January 27th. Aquarius is the sign of social justice and rational thinking – it inspires us towards independence and innovation.  At the New Moon the Sun and Moon align to merge the conscious Self as represented by the Sun with the instinctive emotional patterns of the Moon.  This linking up of these two luminaries is the beginning of the lunar cycle – the Sun solarizes the Moon and infuses it with a new energy, symbolically offering us a new beginning ourselves. This is a time of new beginnings and a time when our new intentions can take hold, helping us to start anew.

Aquarius is an air sign – detached and concerned with matters of the intellect, Aquarius encourages us to see the world in a reasonable and rational way.  This perspective helps us towards a clearer vision of the world and a need for social justice and equality.  Aquarius is ruled by the planet Uranus – the lord of radical change and innovation, and an opposition (aspect of tension) between abundant Jupiter and Uranus is embedded in the chart and encourages greater expansion (Jupiter) of our ideals (Uranus) and new ways of looking at the world and new patterns of living.  A harmonious trine from Saturn (strong foundation) enables us to construct these new patterns in ways that will enhance our lives.

The airiness of the New Moon combines with the fact that four planets are in Pisces which is a very watery sign – this helps us to integrate the intellectual brilliance of the Aquarian influence with the sensitivity and imagination of Pisces.

Creativity abounds under this New Moon, but a challenging Venus aspect […]

Sunday inspiration: We’ve come a long way, baby

Image from Refinery29 on Instagram

The Age of Cancer, approximately 6000-8000 bce, was marked by the rise of agriculture as a more reliable means to feed humanity than simple hunting and gathering.  The Moon, ruler of the nurturing and sign Cancer, became elevated to goddess stature and we begin to see cults of the “Mother Goddess” and fertility cults.  With people beginning to settle into homes and communities, paternity could not be established but maternity could, so the lines of family origin were traced through the mother.  This matrilinear culture persisted through the Age of Gemini (approximately 4000-6000 bce) which continued the establishment of communities and language, and into the age of Taurus (approximately 2000-4000 bce)

Under the influence of the warlike Age of Aries (approximately 2000 bce to the beginning of the common era) the concept of monotheism arose and with it a more patriarchal warrior society to defend the single god.  The role of women became diminished (they are hardly mentioned in the Hebrew bible) and while societies remained matrineal in nature they were ruled by men and dependent on them economically.

This continued through the Piscean age (approximately 0-2100 ce) with the rise of the ancient Church and its denigration of sexuality and emphasis on the idea that any man born from woman is born in sin. While some women rose to power through family connections it was a relatively rare thing and women held no government positions unless they were of royal blood.  They were unable to attend school and were subservient to their male relatives.  If they attempted to take on too much power in their societies they were looked on suspiciously and for about 300 years burned as […]

US Inauguration astrology and the Donald Trump update

2017 inaugurationDonald J. Trump will be inaugurated as President of the United States on January 20th at 12:00 pm, Washington DC.  The astrological chart for the inauguration is the chart for the presidency, so let’s take a look.

Inauguration Chart astrology

The Sun is in the first degree of Aquarius, the sign of freedom and social justice as well as radical behavior and revolution from the past, and it sits in the 10th house of highest aspiration, so this is a very favorable indication of the success of the presidency.  The chart has no planets in retrograde motion which is extremely rare – this suggests that there will not be a lot of looking back into the past for reflection but instead events will unfold rather quickly.

The Moon is in Scorpio which is all about dominance and who has more power than whom, but it is well aspected with a trine to Pallas (wisdom), Neptune (spirit) and Venus (attraction), all in Pisces to soften the Scorpionic intensity.  The Moon is in the 6th house where it’s all about getting things done, which is a nice place for it.

The 11th house is packed with a stellium of planets in Pisces which is not a great sign for political advantage.  Pisces is dreamy and mystical and often too concerned with lofty matters to be very practical or realistic.  The Venus/Neptune conjunction in Pisces makes it difficult to know who our allies are and whether they can be trusted, especially in the 11th house of shared goals.  Chiron (emotional wounds) is packed in there between Venus (allies) and […]
