Pluto, psychology, transformation and the devil

Pluto astrology

You’ll be reading a lot about Pluto in these pages in the next months because I’m just entering a cycle of Pluto to an important system in my chart (geeky astrological details: to my Sun/Saturn/Neptune conjunction which squares Uranus).  Pluto was discovered in 1930 and is associated with psychology and the understanding of our hidden motivations and the mental and emotional factors that underlie our actions.

Pluto, of course, was the Lord of the Underworld.  In psychological astrology he represents the Underworld of the psyche – the secrets that we hide from others and from ourselves, the dim recesses of the mind where our darkest emotions are tucked away.  In transformational astrology I consider Pluto to act as the “Will of the Higher Self” – the part of us that encourages us to transform our secret darkness into an awakened Self through wisdom and understanding.

If we look to the mythological history of Pluto (or Hades as he was called in ancient Greece) we find that Hades was closely identified with Ploutos, the god of wealth and agricultural bounty. Hades himself was a god of the hidden wealth from under the earth such as precious metals and gems, as well as being the protector and defender of the dead.

We often think of Pluto as being a ruthless Lord of Death and destruction, but this early association of Pluto/Hades with protecting the dead reveals a secret to the Pluto archetype that we don’t often consider – Pluto’s real role is to facilitate our personal evolution if we allow it to.  Under Pluto’s influence we find ourselves facing life in a far more intense way than might be comfortable, but it’s all for the sake […]

America’s Pluto transit and a growing love of Putin

US Sibley chart astrologyI just watched an interesting piece by Vox on the growing rise of admiration of Vladmir Putin by Republicans in the US.  (Youtube video below).  In 2014 70% of Republicans disapproved of Vladmir Putin.  By July 2016, Putin’s favorability ratings had spiked so that only 10% of Republicans disapproved of him.

Putin is known as a strongman – he has allegedly ordered the murders of journalists and forcibly invaded other countries just because he could.  Republicans, being from Mars where Democrats are from Venus, respect this kind of power in a way that Democrat-leaning types fear it.

Nations have astrological charts just as individuals do, and in 2014 transiting Pluto began a pass over the US Sun (geeky astrological detail: and the US progressed Jupiter which is beginning to align with the Sun in the natal chart).  Pluto is concerned with issues of power and empowerment, so it’s not surprising that this became more of an issue and something that Americans were grappling with.

This Pluto cycle has now subsided so it will be interesting to see how Americans view the new President’s love of this kind of display of power and whether they will continue to  admire it.

The astrology of Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds

Carrie Fisher astrology

Following the tragic deaths of Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds within a day of each other HBO re-released the 2016 documentary about the mother and daughter.  The film depicts clearly the disconnect between the way these two viewed their relationship.  This incongruity is common in all relationships but is particularly painful in connections between mother and child since that is the primal relationship that sets the stage for all of our other connections throughout our life.

One of the gifts of astrology is the lens it provides to see the motivations and energies behind our own actions and the actions of others.  We tend to ascribe our own motivations to the way others behave but if we are able to understand their perspective it can begin to heal the most challenging of relationships.

Carrie Fisher came to fame as Princess Leia in the Star Wars franchise, and since then she has played out her mental illness in the public arena which is not surprising since her Libra Sun, representing her Self, sits at the top of the chart (the Midheaven).  The Midheaven is the cusp of the astrological house of career, and when your Sun/Self sits at that point you tend to live your life in the public eye in some way. Libra seeks balance and harmony through pleasing others, which often comes at a cost to one’s self.  Dutiful Capricorn is rising in the chart, and her Taurus Moon, like Libra, craved the peace of stability and harmony. Carrie’s chart also shows a challenging square between Saturn (self-doubt) to Pluto (destruction) which often results in inner fears that require self-comfort in order to achieve the peace she craved. Both Saturn and Pluto form a challenging […]

Cancerian Full Moon, January 12th: Balance, stability and Magic

Cancer Full Moon January 2017As we approach the Cancer Full Moon on January 12th, a harmonious Mars cycle helps to energize us and shake off inertia.  We are inspired now for transformation and are likely to feel more alive and aware which will help us to find greater balance during this lunar time where much goes on beyond the superficial level of daily consciousness.

Full Moons always include some tension since the Sun in Capricorn with its focus on practicality and the ends justifying the means, is exactly opposite the Moon in Cancer, inspiring emotional sensitivity and connection to tribe, pulling us in both directions and requiring us to find a way to integrate the opposite signs.  Cancer is the Moon’s own sign which intensifies this lunar quality of shifting moods and instinctive reaction.

Creating even greater tension is an exact Grand Cross with Jupiter and Uranus as well as the Sun and Moon.  Grand Crosses carry a tremendous amount of power in the tension that they bring to bear. They aren’t always comfortable, but this will be a powerful Full Moon that is full of magic. Any hidden restlessness or longing for freedom will erupt under this Full Moon which demands that we find balance between the emotional pull of our inner world (Cancer) and our need to find stability in the outer world (Capricorn).

This Full Moon asks us to open up our hearts to love and magic while keeping our feet firmly planted in the structural reality of the world around us, and to prioritize stability while exploring the nether regions of the psyche without becoming lost in either dimension.

The effect of a Full Moon lasts for about three days, and then we have a couple of stressful Mars […]

Looking backward to look ahead

happy new yearThe Romans celebrated the first day of the year as a festival to Janus, their god of gates, doors, beginnings and endings. They named the month of January after him, and portrayed him with two faces: one looking back and one looking forward. Janus presided over transition from past to future, the passage from childhood to adulthood and into old age. One of his faces was often portrayed clean-shaven with the other bearded.

Gates and doors are both portals from one experience to another. We enter through a gate and leave a part of ourselves behind; we enter the world of the unknown when we transition from one phase to another. Sometimes we seek change, sometimes we embrace it. Other times we fight it – holding on to the past for dear life. However we approach change it is, of course, inevitable. No matter how hard we wish for the day to remain, the night will come – followed by the next day of new beginnings.

For many, the first day of a new year is a day like any other, and to think otherwise is just a trick of the calendar. But a magical life is filled with symbols and meaning, and the passage through the doorway into a new year can be filled with the magic of transformation.

I love the African concept of “Sankofa,” which literally means “it is not taboo to go back and fetch what you forgot.” The word “Sankofa” comes from the Sankofa bird which flies forward while looking backwards. Sankofa teaches that we must look backwards to look forwards, reclaiming and preserving the past as tools for the future. In this way we can pass through the gateways without […]
