Planetary news this week: October 30, 2017

I’m busily writing the November Planetary Illuminations report, but here is the forecast for the week ahead:

  • Mercury (mind and communication) is in Scorpio right now, taking no prisoners and speaking Truth to power. Mercury forms a square to the lunar nodes (the soul’s evolutionary journey from past to future) on October 30th, forcing a shift in ideas where necessary in order to follow a clearer path.  There may be an idea or belief that is keeping us from being able to move forward, and you may find yourself facing a choice to remain stuck in the past or release that thought to move more confidently into the future.
  • The Black Moon Lilith (representing a primal feminine rage against the patriarchy) is revealing herself to be more and more important in light of the spread of sexual harassment revelations.  She turned retrograde last week at the Libra New Moon and has now moved back into the sign of Sagittarius.  In Sagittarius, the sign of our shared philosophies and expanded ideals, she will continue to spread the message of feminine power.  I’ll be writing much more about this over the coming weeks.
  • Chiron is active on the 2nd and 3rd of November, potentially triggering painful memories and situations but also offering an opportunity for healing.  These Chiron periods are good times for activities that will support your mental and physical health.
  • The Taurus Full Moon on November 4th asks us to balance the intense power of the Scorpio season and find peace and serenity in our environment and our personal lives.  The Full Moon forms a challenging square with Ceres, the asteroid that governs our ability to nurture ourselves and others, suggesting that an adjustment will be necessary in […]

Gender identity in the birthchart: A peek into the Aquarian Age

I’ve been listening to archived episodes of Chris Brennan’s excellent astrology podcast which has generated a lot of blog ideas.  One of the more interesting episodes was which features astrologer Christopher Renstrom.  Chris and Christopher discuss a wide range of ideas from a historical perspective which I found very interesting since I am not that well versed in the ancient astrological works of  and other ancient astrological history or the rules surrounding the prediction whether or not an individual was gay based on planetary configurations in their astrological chart.

Ancient astrologers such as Ptolemy were much more concerned with absolutes in prediction and description of the human experience than we are today; for example, suggesting that if Venus and Jupiter precede the Sun in a man’s chart and those two planets also aspect Mars, that man will only be interested in sex with men.  Or, if Mars and Venus in a woman’s chart are both in masculine signs (fire and air signs), she will be inclined towards lesbianism.  I haven’t done enough research to know if these rules are true, but I did look up Jodie Foster’s chart.  Ms. Foster is a noted lesbian actor whose Mars is indeed in the masculine sign of Leo, but her Venus is in the feminine sign of Scorpio.

In my experience with gay clients as well as profiles of well-known people, it seems to me that the LGBTQ experience encompasses a very wide spectrum of attributes.  There are transgendered individuals who experience themselves as having incarnated into the wrong body.  There are “gender fluid” people who are attracted to people of both sexes.  There are gay men who are more feminine than their body suggests, […]

Planetary news this week: October 23, 2017

This week brings some shifts in energies as the Sun moves into Scorpio, beginning the Scorpio season of darkness, myth and magic.  With the mind already processing the inner workings of the psyche now that Mercury is in Scorpio, and Jupiter’s entry into Scorpio squeezes out the nasty secrets in the entertainment business as well as the political realm (both Jupiter’s realm), we can no longer hide from the difficult and the dark.

On a positive note, challenging conversations may become easier under the influence of Scorpio, and our personal path to growth can be illuminated with the Sun aligned with expansive Jupiter.  Mars, the planet that inspires and motivates us, has moved into Libra where it yearns to find balance and integrate the confusion of opposites into one complete whole of understanding and compassion.

Over the next two weeks you may find yourself feeling more emotionally sensitive and reactive than usual as a challenging square aspect takes shape between Saturn (tests and insecurity) and Chiron (emotional wounds).  While this can be an uncomfortable dynamic, it can also help to facilitate the processing and release of old wounds that bind us to the past.

Libra New Moon, October 19 2017: Finding balance in the midst of chaos

Libra New Moon(See the end of the post for the geeky astrological details)

The New Moon is the darkest time of the lunar cycle – the time when there is no lunar light. The Sun and Moon are in exact alignment in the sky, at the same degree, and the lunar light is obscured by the Sun. For a brief moment we are suspended in time, and life is full of unrealized potential.

New Moons are famously a time for a new beginning.  A new lunar cycle – a new way of looking at the world.  In Libra, that new beginning takes the form of a new way of seeing all of the different kinds of relationships in our world: relationships between people, polarities of ideas, the spectrum of beliefs.  Under the influence of Libra, every thing is weighed against another in the attempt to find balance and perfect harmony.  Giving and receiving and the sharing of energy becomes more important, and integrating the two into a perfect flow becomes the goal.

This perfect harmony is difficult to achieve in today’s world which is full of accelerated intensity and chaos, and the achievement of equilibrium is made more difficult in this year’s Libra New Moon as a disruptive force applies pressure on both the Sun and Moon, demanding that we get out of our comfortable environments and find a new way that is more authentic and true. And yet Venus, the ruler of this New Moon, is also in the sign of Libra, reminding us that love and beauty are of paramount importance, and what will save this world and ourselves as well.

Still, there is a force of intensity and passion that continues knocking at the soul’s door, demanding to […]

Harvey Weinstein – the astrology of sex and power

How appropriate that Harvey Weinstein, arguably the most powerful mogul in Hollywood today and perhaps in Hollywood history, was terminated from his leadership position at the Weinstein Company just as Jupiter (leadership) goes into Scorpio (sex and power).

Weinstein is notorious among Hollywood circles for his and sexual harassment allegations that span over decades.  Over the past few days actresses who declined his advances have come forward to tell their Weinstein stories, and presumably there are many more who did not fight in order to save their careers.

The astrology chart of Harvey Weinstein (born March 19, 1952 in Queens NY, time unknown) shows his Sun at 29 degrees Pisces – the very last degree of sensitive and Pisces, bleeding into assertive and dominant Aries.  The 29th degree is sometimes called the “anaretic” degree and is considered a critical placement that shows a significant lesson to be learned. In medieval astrology the “anareta” was a planet of destruction and considered to be dangerous.  While modern astrology doesn’t take these significators literally, the 29th degree indicates a completion of some kind of karma and needs to be taken seriously.

The transition from Pisces to Aries involves the lesson of incorporating the assertive leadership of Aries into the compassion and sensitivity of Pisces, but in some cases one sign will react against the other which is what we see in Weinstein’s behavior. The Sun makes no aspects to any other planets (a “singleton”) suggesting an individual who stands alone and finds it difficult to combine one’s energies with others.  (Brad Pitt is another famous Singleton Sun individual.)

Weinstein has Mars (sexuality and drive) in its own […]
