Planetary news this week! Mercury retrograde and a total lunar eclipse

lunar eclipse July 27.  Mercury is in its shadow period now, moving at a snails space as it prepares to turn retrograde.  (Most people know by know that Mercury doesn’t actually travel backwards, or retrograde but because we observe the motion of the planets from Earth they sometimes appear to move backwards from our perspective which we call retrograde motion.)   Mercury will be retrograde through August 18th.  Because Mercury rules communication, learning and communication equipment, anything started or implemented during Mercury retrograde periods MAY bring potential problems or glitches later on.

As someone who has observed this phenomenon for over 40 years, I can tell you that the current hysteria over Mercury retrograde that fills the Interwebs is way overblown.  It sells astrological news perhaps, but the number of people who write me in terror of making a move or even a small purchase during these periods makes me weep.

During the Mercury retrograde, we just need to exercise an additional level of care.  If you’re booking a flight for a trip, REview your flight arrangements a few times to be sure you haven’t made a mistake.  If you have to start a job, sign a contract, or buy a new car because your old one died, do your REsearch, REread the contract or documents to be sure they are clear.

Mercury retrograde periods are excellent for REvisiting a discussion which isn’t quite REsolved, or simply for taking time to REflect and REwind your life.  The waves of the ocean ebb and flow, and the retrograde periods are like the ebb tide, REturning us back to the ocean to REcharge and REplenish our life force.

It will likely help that Mercury is acting as a singleton planet during […]

Low esteem and materialism go hand in hand

updated from 2007.

Researchers have found that low self-esteem and materialism are not just a correlation, but also a causal relationship where low self esteem increases materialism, and materialism can also create low self-esteem. The also found that as self esteem increases, materialism decreases. The study primarily focused on how this relationship affects children and adolescents. Lan Nguyen Chaplin (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) and Deborah Roedder John (University of Minnesota) found that even a simple gesture to raise self-esteem dramatically decreased materialism, which provides a way to cope with insecurity.

“By the time children reach early adolescence, and experience a decline in self-esteem, the stage is set for the use of material possessions as a coping strategy for feelings of low self-worth,” they write in the study, which will appear in the Journal of Consumer Research.

This is no surprise to astrologers, who place self-esteem and material needs in the second house of the birthchart. The second house, associated with Taurus, deals with our material needs and our desire for wealth and financial security, but also with our values and our sense of self-esteem, our talents and skills and how we feel about them. Clients with a challenged second house often find that their ability to achieve financial security is tied closely with their self-esteem.

goes on to say:

In the book “Happiness: Lessons From a New Science”, Richard Layard exposes a paradox at the heart of our lives. Most of us want more income so we can consume more. Yet as societies become richer, they do not become happier. In fact, the First World has more depression, more alcoholism and more crime than fifty years ago. This paradox is true of […]

Sunday inspiration: Cut the storyline

This week’s Cancerian New Moon eclipse opposed transformative Pluto which is in an exact square right now to a complex system in my own natal chart that includes Saturn and the Sun.  I have been turning inside out as the energy of Pluto demands that I remain aware of the churning emotional and thought patterns that struggle to emerge and be released, just like little daemons I have carried with me throughout my life.  The retrograde travel of Mars is a great ally in this struggle to break free of the captors that hold our heart prisoners, but sometimes the battle distracts us from the Truth of surrender.

profoundly spoke to me, and perhaps it will speak to you as well.

When you find yourself overwhelmed by habitual, ruminative thinking; when the repetitive thoughts and feelings are cascading and looping; when you are caught in the trance of disembodiment and self-abandonment… just stop.

With the power and presence of the warrior’s sword of compassion, cut the storyline. No, not this time. This time I choose differently.

Slow way down and feel your feet on the ground. Breathe deeply into your lower belly and activate your senses. See what is around you with clear vision, enter into pure listening. Shift your sacred life energy out of the spinning and into the aliveness of the body. While it may appear otherwise, the safety we seek is in self-attunement, self-compassion, and holding the visitor as he or she appears.

It is an act of kindness to not fuel the dysregulating narrative, and takes practice, courage, and curiosity. Something is erupting under the surface, longing to be integrated and allowed back home, but it […]

An astrological chart for Russia

Nations have astrological charts just as people do – in fact, you can cast an astrological chart for any person, event, animal – every moment in time has its own chart.  The study of astrological charts of nations and political entities is called “mundane astrology.”

With Russia in the news now, someone asked in the comments about a chart for Russia and I dug up this old article I wrote exploring which chart for Russia is the most useful, and outlining a bit of an analysis for the Russian chart.

December 8, 1991 is the date that Belarus, the Russian Federation and the Ukraine announced the Minsk Declaration which dissolved the Soviet Union, but the agreement wasn’t ratified by the Russian Parliament until the 12th of December that year at 13:22 according to Nick Campion. On the other hand,  uses the chart of December 25, 1991 when the flag for the new Russia began flying at the Kremlin.

The late Zipporah “Zip” Dobyns, one of the world’s most celebrated astrologers, uses yet another chart: the chart of  in August of 1991. Her reasoning in using this chart is because “it works” to explain subsequent events better than the other dates. With all due respect to the memory of Ms. Dobyns, this doesn’t seem a very scholarly way to approach the birth of a nation.

To me the date that makes the most sense from a historical point of view is the date that the Russian Federation declared its independence from the Soviet Union which was June 12, 1990. This is the date that the First Congress of People’s Deputies of the Russian Federation adopted the Declaration on Russia’s National Sovereignty which seems to […]

Cancer Supermoon Eclipse! July 12, 2018

Cancer New MoonThe Cancer New Moon on the 12th is a Supermoon and a partial solar eclipse.  The term Supermoon (™ astrologer ) simply means that the Moon is at its closest point to the Earth.  When the Moon is full and a Supermoon it appears large in the sky.  When the Supermoon is a New Moon, we can’t see it at all because the light of the Sun obscures the Moon.  When the New Moon is an eclipse, the Sun is obscured as well.

The symbolism of an eclipse is connected to the Nodes of the Moon – points in the sky where the path of the Moon crosses the path of the Sun.  Because the lunar nodes are connected to fate and destiny, eclipses do often have a fated quality and a sense that something in the life is being exposed or released.

All New Moons, whether an eclipse or not, are a time of new beginnings.  The New Moon in Cancer seeks to connect us to our emotional roots – family, or the family that we create for ourselves.  We cannot master the world (Cancer’s opposite sign of Capricorn) until we connect deeply to our emotional heart and allow it to soften rather than build up a crusty shell that defends us from hurt but also prevents the flow of love.  This is one of the lessons of Cancer.

Another Cancerian lesson is that the past takes us to the future and cannot be avoided.  Our history is our present, and both can be transformed.

This is a partial eclipse visibly and pretty far from the lunar nodes so weaker astrologically –  but it is a powerful astrological event nonetheless.   The New Moon is exactly opposite Pluto, […]
