Eclipse season begins: the solar eclipse at the Cancer New Moon

artist unknown – if you know who created this please let me know. The first eclipse of the summer (there are two this month) occurs July 2nd at the New Moon in Cancer.  In a solar eclipse, which is always at a New Moon, the light of the Sun is obscured by the Moon.  The Sun’s light is typically stronger than that of the Moon; the Sun represents consciousness and the awakened Self, whereas the Moon is connected with our inner light – our emotions and instincts which tend to be more hidden.  So when the Moon obscures the Sun, the abundant energies of our inner world are unleashed.

An eclipse occurs when the Sun and Moon are near the lunar nodes – the points where the lunar and solar orbits intersect.  There is a sense of fate with these points, which gives eclipses a somewhat fated quality.  Your destiny is calling, and we must pay attention.

This eclipse is in Cancer, the sign of the Moon which amplifies that lunar effect of revealing our innermost longings and feelings.  There is a sense at this eclipse that our old emotional wounds – feelings of abandonment, of unworthiness – will be triggered due to a challenging square from Chiron, the planet whose job it is to expose these old wounds so that they can be healed, just as a wound to the skin is healed when exposed to the air rather than covered in a bandage.

Cancer’s focus is on family, in all its forms.  A sense of tribal belonging.  Perhaps that has nothing to do with our family of origin, but takes place in our communities or are friendship groups.  Or perhaps we live alone with five cats and THAT […]

The 2019 Sagittarius Full Moon and the Galactic Center

The Galactic Center, currently at 27 degrees Sagittarius, is the rotational center of our galaxy – like the Sun, which is the center of our solar system and the major astrological factor of personal significance, the Galactic Center is the force that binds the galaxy together.  Astrologically and symbolically, the Galactic Center is the heart of the Universe – the soul of wisdom for our solar system and our species of humanity as well as all of the other planetary systems and species that may exist in the farther reaches of the Milky Way.

This week’s Full Moon is at the Galactic Center, suggesting potential for a portal of awareness and insight at this time.  Sagittarius is the sign of exploration and adventure, but also the sign that seeks meaning and truth.  Under this Full Moon, we can expand our awareness and the limitation of our own ideas and achieve greater understanding that can help us in very practical ways.

This Full Moon experience is irritated by a complex planetary system involving Mars, the planet of drive, motivation and war.  Mars is in emotional Cancer right now and the rumblings of anger and frustration may be more difficult to access.  But Mars aligns with Mercury (the mind and communication) at this Full Moon, heightening the intensity of our conversations and making arguments and disputes more likely.  This is exacerbated by a stressful opposition from Mars and Mercury to both Saturn and Pluto.  Saturn represses and attempts to block these energies, and Pluto blows them up in order to transform them into more productive pathways of personal evolution.

When the planetary energies are this intense, there is no point in trying to avoid them.  Instead, we can pay attention to […]

Create your new beginning with the Gemini New Moon, June 3 2019

The Moon is new on June 3rd in the sign of Gemini.  Gemini is the sign of the twins and finds pleasure in the embrace of dual views that may seem incompatible but which actually enhance our nature and help us to grow and evolve.  The more we understand about who we are, the more effective we can be in our lives and Gemini accomplishes this through attracting experiences through which we change and take on new characteristics and qualities.  Under the sign of Gemini we are more flexible, which makes it easier to create something new which forces us to shed an old skin that no longer fits these new experiences and new ways of looking at the world.

Gemini is an air sign, and lives in the realm of the mind.  Communication is critical under the influence of Gemini, and so is objectivity.  Gemini is also a bit of a mimic, encouraging us to try on new experiences and new personas in order to learn more about how we are.  In this New Moon chart, both the Sun and Moon are in a harmonious trine to Pallas – asteroid of Divine Intelligence.  Pallas connects us to our own inner knowing – unlike the flashes of intuition in which we gain knowledge from a higher plane, the wisdom of Pallas comes from within.  Under the influence of Pallas the divine spark of Universal wisdom is lit and we see with abundant clarity, unsullied by any confusion of personal emotions.

Venus, the planet of relating and attraction, is in a harmonious trine to transformational Pluto at this time.  The fruit of our ideas and realizations can be seamlessly integrated into our relationships […]

The Taurus New Moon: Settling into the peace space

The New Moon on May 4th is in the sign of Taurus.  The symbol for Taurus is the bull – wise, placid but powerful, stable, slow to anger, the bull is a majestic symbol of peacefulness in the heart of strength.  Like the bull, under the influence of Taurus we seek experiences which will help us to find that sense of equanimity and comfort.  We nestle into cozy spaces and hunger for pleasure that will be truly satisfying.  No frankenfood will do under the Taurean influence, we must have fine wines and the best dark chocolates, food with pleasing colors and textures.  We wrap ourselves in natural fabrics and enjoy the scents of flowers.

The New Moon is, of course, the beginning of a new lunar cycle.  Over the past few months we’ve had a confusing retrograde period of Mercury, and an intense breakdown period of Saturn and Pluto which is just beginning to wane.   With the Taurus New Moon, we are finally able to connect more completely with the physical – settle into our bodies, walk barefoot on the earth, hug a tree, sit quietly and just experience the very fact that we are alive.

Not all of the planets are supportive of the slowing down and smelling the roses – we still have the mutual reception of Mercury in Aries, ruled by Mars, and Mars in Gemini, ruled by Mercury – firing up the engines of the brain and making it difficult to relax.  We still have a potentially challenging aspect (a T-square) involving Mercury (mind), Mars (action) and Jupiter (expansion) that demands action (Mars/Jupiter) yet blurs our sight to the point where we are unable to see clearly (Neptune).   But none of that matters right now […]

Endings at the Full Moon in the Critical Degree of Libra

Libra Full Moon April 19

The Full Moon on the 19th is at the very last degree of Libra. The 29th degree is also called the “critical” or “anaretic” degree – it is a degree of completion and marks the end of one cycle and the evolution into another.  There is a poignancy to this degree, and it is often associated with the idea of chickens coming home to roost – it’s too late to control the outcome, but the facts must be faced.

The 29th degree, sometimes called the “critical” or “anaretic” degree, is associated with the endings of cycles and new beginnings.  The word “anaretic” derives from “anareta,” which in ancient astrology signified the planet of death in the natal horoscope.  The Hellenistic astrologer Ptolemy’s writings use the word “anaretic” as an antonym for “benefic,” meaning dstructive or fatal.  This is what has given the 29th degree such a bad rap, although endings are actually the harbinger of new beginnings and not to be feared.

This Full Moon in Libra, the sign of balance and integration, encourages us to find a way to leave behind anything in our lives that is standing in the way of our finding that internal balance. Something is bound to come to an end in order to help us to continue to grow in that integration and harmony.  At the Libra Full Moon, the Sun is in Aries and a balance is required between our personal needs (Aries) and our ability to integrate those needs into our interactions with others in a way that will maintain equilibrium and balance.  Libra’s love of beauty stems from this need for peace within, and at this Full Moon it will […]
