Saturn on the Scorpio/Sagittarius cusp

Scorpio Sagittarius cusp

Saturn, the planet of tests and challenges, entered Sagittarius in December but then retrograded back into Scorpio between June 14th and will move back into Sagittarius on September 17th.

While Saturn was in Scorpio, the sign that rules intensity, power, and sexuality among many other things, we saw a rise of sexual abuse allegations, including the eruption of a long-suppressed case against Bill Cosby, the exposure of sexual abuse rings in Britain, and the revelation of secrets after the hack of the Ashley Madison cheating website.  (Read more about Saturn in Scorpio.

Saturn is the teacher of the planetary pantheon, and it brings lessons into every sign through which it travels.  Saturn’s journey through Sagittarius has already brought challenges to transportation and immigration, both of which fall under the Sagittarius umbrella.  When Saturn retrograded back into Scorpio to complete its tasks there it didn’t leave behind the Sagittarian issues.

Immigration will obviously be a critical aspects of this 2-1/2 year trip of Saturn through Sagittarius which rules long distance travel and the exposure to foreign cultures which expand the mind.  Immigration is already shown to be a highlight of campaigns for the 2016 election as Republicans propose ways to keep out immigrants not only from Mexico but from Canada as well.  Floods of immigrants attempting to escape Syria are changing the face of Europe, and the result of further integration of Muslim culture with old Europe will bring with it a new set of challenges.  Camps to restrict (Saturn) the movement of these migrants is already causing problems which will continue to increase under Saturn’s passage through Sagittarius.

The lessons of each sign lead us to the next – in Scorpio we face our demons […]

Advice to readers: Saturn as mentor and ally

Saturn mentorThis question came up recently and I wanted to share this discussion with others as well.

Anthony writes:

With Saturn in Scorpio squaring Jupiter in Leo, will that limit and restrict the gifts/opportunities/freedom Leos were to receive from Jupiter? Only manifest opportunities that are “real”/in our best interests? Make us work harder for success?

It especially concerns me with a 9 Leo sun and 17 Taurus moon. Saturn will take its final swipe at my moon as Jupiter lights up my sun the one and only time so I worry about being blocked from taking advantage of the opportunities I was supposed to get. By the time Saturn is out of orb Jupiter will be, too, so looks like I will miss out this time.

I don’t know anything about the rest of Anthony’s chart which could shed more light on his concern over lost opportunities and sense of powerlessness over the ebb and flow of opportunity in one’s life.  The square of Saturn to Jupiter CAN have the effect of limiting Jupiter’s expansion and encourages us to be sure that we are not all just expansion and optimism but also practical and grounded. Squares aren’t inherently “bad” but they are stronger – Saturn squaring Jupiter can be a time of great success because we work hard (Saturn) as well as think positively (Jupiter).

Of course there will be other things going on in his chart at the same time so we can’t really look at this one element and predict what will occur. A lot of it depends on where he is in his life and what he needs in order to learn to grow and become more integrated. But this phrase  troubles me: ” I worry about being blocked from taking advantage of […]

Saturn in Scorpio: Getting tough on sexual violence

Saturn in ScorpioSaturn entered Scorpio about a year ago and will take another year and a half or so to travel through that sign.  Scorpio is traditionally ruled by Mars and its modern ruler is Pluto, and these are the two planets that govern sexuality.  Mars deals with the physical drives including the sexual drive and energy, and Pluto addresses matters of intimacy and the “petit mort” of sexual surrender. Pluto is also fearless when it comes to the dark side of the human experience, and we often find rape and abusive behaviors under its banner, and Scorpio tends to be an investigator in areas of life where the more carefree signs might fear to venture.

In its role as Celestial Teacher, Saturn brings consequences and lessons in areas of life governed by the sign it travels through, and we have seen many instances in the news over the past year in which governmental bodies (Saturn) are getting tough on sexual violence (Scorpio) in their communities.

In North Carolina where I live UNC students filed a grievance with the federal government accusing the university of failing to adequately protect students from sexual assault or prosecuting these assaults.  The same thing occurred previously in Montana, resulting in a rewrite of rules that are becoming the standard for colleges across the country, and similar investigations are occurring everywhere, including Colorado, California, Pennsylvania, Tennessee.

In the US military support is growing for for prosecuting sexual assault in the military.  “The Pentagon estimates that there were 26,000 sexual assaults in the military last year, but only 302 prosecutions resulted from complaints.”  Those are appalling numbers.

In Delhi India, all four defendants in a  trial for a gang rape that resulted in the […]

Saturn/Pluto and teenage violence and depression

I was catching up on my local newspaper this morning when I found an article about a who had been shot and killed by police after he opened fire on them.  Searching his backpack, police found a handgun and 250 rounds of ammunition.
I wanted to find out more about the situation so I searched in Google News and came up with these other similar events involving 13 and 14 year olds:
Then I looked back a few months for more events, and found these:
Thinking maybe this is just a fluke, and that other age groups are also killing themselves and each other at alarming rates I searched for “teen suicides” and found none other than the ones listed here.
Even in the best of times, kids aged 13-14 go through some rough patches.  This is the time of the “Saturn Opposition,” when transiting Saturn forms a 180 degree angle to Saturn in the birthchart.  Saturn is the planet that brings us hardship and challenges so that we will learn the attributes of discipline and hard work and the strength to overcome adversity,  Until we learn those skills, though, Saturn cycles can be […]

The end of Saturn in Virgo: Chronotherapists

Thanks to Deborah at Wall Street Weather for this excellent article on Time which included a link to another article predicting something called Chronotherapy as “the Next Big Thing” in health care. Chronotherapy is healing that takes into consideration the circadian rhythms that make up the daily flow of our physical system.

This may seem like a fringe movement, but the Johns Hopkins website suggests that chronotherapy can be used to optimize the taking of medications for optimum results. Chronotherapy is being used to time chemotherapy treatments in cancer patients and for hypertension.

Saturn will be turning retrograde this month (meaning it will appear to move backwards from our perspective here on earth) and then it will travel back into Virgo in early April. Saturn represents the principle of waking up to the reality of whatever sign it passes through, and in Virgo, the sign of health and life in a body among other things, it has been forcing us to face the difficult realities of the health care system.

While Saturn has passed through Virgo all kinds of revelations have come out regarding the way we look at matters of health. From pharmaceuticals in the water, to food rationing in America and starvation in the developing world, to a nearly public acknowledgement of the dangers in plastics and beauty products, and of course the huge debate in America on revamping the insurance system – all of these bear the hallmarks of Saturn’s forcing the issue so that it can be handled with focus and pragmatism.

Saturn is the Roman version of the Greek god Kronos, and Kronos was the god of Time, an aspect of Saturn as well. Some sources say that it was Chronos and not Kronos that was […]
