The Jupiter/Neptune square of 2019: Dissolving limitations and boundaries

Jupiter square Neptune

One of the more significant planetary cycles of 2019 is a powerful square (90 degree) dynamic between Jupiter and Neptune.  Jupiter and Neptune are connected through their mutual rulership of the sign Pisces:  Jupiter is the traditional ruler and Neptune the modern ruler of Pisces. Jupiter and Neptune share an expansive view of the world, and a desire to bring true meaning into our lives.  However, Jupiter’s focus is more on the expansion of the Self through a pursuit of meaning and Truth whereas Neptune’s role is to inspire us to break free of the boundaries of the limitations of this material world and the individual Self.

Because Jupiter and Neptune are natural allies, even the stressful aspects like the square can bring about a swell of creativity and bliss.   Jupiter’s expansive and buoyant nature gives a boost to Neptune’s inspiration to expand the inner spiritual heart.  The only danger here is that Jupiter is especially powerful in the other sign which it rules: Sagittarius, and Neptune is in Pisces, the sign co-ruled by Jupiter and Neptune.  All of this magic and bliss and creativity and inspiration is wonderful for writers, musicians, artists – anyone practicing in a creative field or exploring spirituality.  It is less wonderful for keeping our feet on the ground and making sensible decisions.

Fortunately, during this first phase of the Jupiter/Neptune square (January 10-30) we have a stellium of four planets and luminaries in grounded Capricorn: Saturn, Mercury, Pluto and the Sun.  Saturn, the planet that teaches us to master the material world, is in its own sign of Capricorn where it is creating boundaries as quickly as Jupiter and Neptune can unravel them.  This may feel a bit nerve-racking […]

Planetary news this week, January 7, 2019

This week, while we are coming off the influence of the solar eclipse at the Capricorn New Moon, Uranus is at a standstill in the sky as it prepares to change direction.  In its role as the instigator of radical change and transmission of information from the higher mind, Uranus helps to expand our consciousness as it inspires us to break out of routines that keep us stuck in our day to day ruts.

When any planet prepares to appear to change direction (of course we all know that planets don’t really change direction, they just seem to from our vantage point on Earth) it slows down, just as a car does before making a U-turn.  At these times that planet’s influence is more intense than usual, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself needing to break out of a routine or someplace you feel stuck over the next week since Uranus turned direct on the 6th.

Venus enters Sagittarius today (January 7) which will be nice for our relationships and our general sense of well-being.  While in Sagittarius for a few weeks, Venus will encourage us to socialize more and enjoy having fun with the people around us.  There will be less emphasis on confrontation and processing hard stuff, and more of a focus on sharing ideas and just enjoying each other.

Venus is associated with the monetary system, and while Venus is in Sagittarius, especially since Uranus has turned direct, we may see the globalize financial situation stabilize for a few weeks as the principle of confidence under Venus in Sagittarius offsets the heavy solidity of the Capricorn stellium at the eclipse.

Still, the challenging square from Jupiter (optimism) to Neptune (delusion) that culminates on January 13th is […]

An astrological forecast for 2019

astrology of 2019A quick look back

There is a famous Chinese curse that goes something along the lines of “May you live in an interesting age” and that is certainly true of the time that we are living in at the moment.  Fortunately we have at our disposal a tool to make some sense of the chaos that we sometimes see around us:  An understanding of planetary cycles.  While it’s difficult to predict specific events that will take place under a particular planetary cycle, we ARE able to get a sense of the general climate and energies that are available to us or affecting us in some way.

We have emerged from the challenging square aspect between Uranus (radical change) and Pluto (destruction and regeneration) that created so much challenge between 2008 and 2017.  Now that much of dismantling of the power structures has occurred, the rebuilding must take place.  Saturn, the planet that assists in that process, is in its own sign of Capricorn which should help.

The Capricorn Stellium

In December of 2019 we will have a lineup of five planets in Capricorn.  The last time there was a large stellium in Capricorn was the period between 1988-1989 (see this recent article about individuals born during that time period).  Capricorn is associated with the material world and the structures we create to support it. The last Capricorn stellium witnessed the beginning of the disintegration and restructuring of the Soviet Union, the reunification of East and West Germany, the creation of new governments in the former Eastern Bloc including Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Poland.

Part of the Capricorn Stellium is the approaching conjunction of Saturn to Pluto in that sign.  Although these two don’t officially converge exactly until January 2020, […]

Jupiter in Sagittarius: Prepare for adventure! November 2018 – December 2019

Jupiter in SagittariusJupiter left intense Scorpio for sunny Sagittarius on November 8, 2018, a planetary shift heralded around the world with the superlatives you would associate with a planet as big as Jupiter entering a sign as happy as Sagittarius.  Astrological headlines declare “Outgoing, lucky and limitless”; “the upgrade your life needs”; “Getting to Yes”; “taking you on a beautiful adventure.”   Everyone loves Jupiter, the planet of good fortune, luck and abundance.

Looking back to 2007

Because Jupiter rules Sagittarius its power to expand and open up new possibilities can operate unimpeded by other influences. Jupiter in Sagittarius seeks adventure, prosperity, faith and meaning in life. Jupiter generally takes a full year to go through each sign in the zodiac, and last traversed through Sagittarius in 2007.  At the time, Pluto (obsession, destruction, regeneration) was finishing its journey through Sagittarius where it had overseen an obsession with bigger houses, more money, self-help and a relentless optimism that took a dive when Pluto moved into Capricorn in 2008.  It’s difficult to separate the influence of Jupiter in Sagittarius that year from the Pluto problems, but one thing we know for sure is that every aspect of astrological archetypes has a dark side and a light one.  Saturn, that devil of hardship and difficult lessons, bestows strength and the ability to master the physical universe.  And Jupiter, the light of beneficence, can encourage so much faith and confidence that we don’t see the train coming as we veer off the track.

About Jupiter

Jupiter in the birthchart or by transit provides the impulse for us to grow and evolve. It is involved in the realm of faith and the search for meaning in life, and in doing so there is a bit of restlessness […]

Uranus square the lunar nodes: Change is inevitable, progress is optional

Over the past week, and throughout November, the planet Uranus and the lunar nodes will be locked in a square (90 degree) formation.  The nodes of the Moon are points where the journey of the Moon through the sky crosses the path of the Sun, and these points are associated with the soul’s journey from past to future.

I view the outer planets as transformational forces which inspire us, activating something in the personality in order to create change where change is necessary.  Uranus is the planet of change itself – under the influence of Uranus we tend to become restless with anything in our lives that feels stuck, and sometimes we find ourselves faced with shocking events that serve to knock us from our comfort zone.

Our lives are built on patterns of expectation.  We expect that we will wake up in the morning, and that we will follow our normal routines during the day.  Uranus tends to break apart those expectations, at best helping us to see our lives through new eyes.  At its most difficult, Uranus can bring about a drastic change that forces a change in perspective.

Planetary cycles occur on several planes at once.  The alignment of the planets in the sky (which I write about in my Planetary Illuminations newsletter) affect everyone on the planet on a macro level.  When these alignments interact with the planets in our own natal chart, they stimulate change or evolution on a much more personal level.  There are other layers of planetary influence as well: to our relationships, to our communities and countries, to our evolving selves.

The current square between Uranus and the lunar nodes could bring about surprising events in our lives that shake us […]
