Astrologers predict the outcome of the 2012 election: Part I

2012 presidential election predictionsAt the recent United Astrology Conference (to which I was invited to speak, but was unable to attend due to family health emergencies), a panel of esteemed astrologers discussed their predictions regarding the outcome of the 2012 presidential elections.

You can watch the entire presentation and (thanks for the links).  I was interested to see what techniques these astrologers used.  Most of the astrologers on the panel represent one of the more traditional branches of astrology, with Gary Christian practicing Uranian astrology which is a sort of fringe element of astrology that goes back to the early 20th century.

  • Gary Christian, representing Uranian astrology and Cosmobiology.
  • Edith Hathaway, representing Indian or Vedic astrology.
  • Nina Gryphon, representing Medieval and Renaissance astrology.
  • Claude Weiss, representing Modern western astrology.
  • Chris Brennan, representing Hellenistic astrology, on behalf of the writers of the Political Astrology Blog.

Gary Christian used the date for the oath of office and the solstice chart for the Winter Solstice 2012 and inserted the charts for both candidates into these charts.

Edith Hathaway used a variety of Vedic techniques as well as the strength of the ascendant lord (ruler) and the 10th house lord (ruler).  She is suspicious of the official Obama chart but prefers her rectified chart with Cancer rising as opposed to the Aquarius rising chart using the official birth certificate.  (Personally I have a hard time seeing Obama as a sensitive Cancerian ascendant.)

Nina Gryphon uses only the traditional planets.  She used the Aries ingress (spring equinox) chart for the year and location of the election. You can .

Claude Weiss uses transits and progressions, converse progressions, solar returns including progressed solar return as it aspects the chart for the election.

Chris Brennan uses ancient and complex Hellenistic techniques for prediction that are .

Using a variety of techniques, the astrologers universally predicted that Obama would win the 2012 election.

Perpetual contrarian that I am, I have my doubts.  First of all, I have long said that the revolution that is perpetuated by the opening square of the Uranus/Pluto cycle will occur on the right just as it did on the left during the conjunction in the 1960s.

The day of the election the transiting Moon will be in Libra, transiting the Midheaven of the US Sibley chart and both are squared by the transiting Sun. The Sun will be sitting right on the US Jupiter which bodes well for voter turnout. Transiting Uranus is inconjunct the US progressed Sun which suggests an upset.

Most telling, transiting Pluto is tightly quincunx Uranus in the US chart which echoes the theme of a radical change but suggests that there is an impatience (Uranus) that will necessitate a total upheaval (Pluto).  I suspect that the polls will say one thing up until the day of the election, and there will be a reversal on election day.

To me, all of these things signify that the incumbent will not be elected.

Part II here.

Very, very interesting, Lynn. I’d put my money on you anytime!
Also there is the added twist that Mercury stations retrograde on Election Day.

  2. Diane June 28, 2012 at 2:41 pm

You are an excellent astrologer, but you have not addressed Mercury retrograde and the fact that Jupiter will still be in Gemini conjuncting Obama’s Moon in Gemini. There have been suggestions that there might be some recounts due to the Mercury retrograde, but Obama will prevail. Sometimes astrologers can over analyze the complexities of all the planets in aspect at the time of the event. A more simplistic analysis can often be more accurate.

The post isn’t finished Diane, wait for part II.

    • Grace July 2, 2012 at 3:59 pm

Hopefully, “freedom” will prevail on election day.

Hi Lynn, I’ve been following the astrologer’s and psychic predictions this year. From my numeric perspective, I don’t see a clear winner ‘appears’ as if the victor is decided after the election date. To give me a stronger picture, I’m waiting for the Presidential contenders to choose their running mate before I make my numeric prediction. Since a birth time is not necessary, simply a precise date of birth, wonder what the numerology community is seeing…

    Looking forward to Part II

  4. KaD June 28, 2012 at 9:21 pm

Why has no one run the chart for the candidate with by far the most electoral college votes-Ron Paul???

  5. Jen June 29, 2012 at 1:16 am

Obama as a cancer ascendant makes more sense than Aquarius rising?!?! Please tell me Edith Hathaway isn’t one of those delusional birthers. I haven’t bothered to check a Kenya chart for Obama because…he was born in Hawaii. Otherwise looking forward to part 2.

    • crystalwolflady July 1, 2012 at 3:15 pm

Jen, I thought the same thing!

      • KaD July 1, 2012 at 6:16 pm

For those of you who don’t know the Hawaiian government NEVER agreed or signed anything to be part of the US:
Hawaii’s government was overthrown on Jan. 17, 1893, by a relatively small group of men, most of them American by birth or heritage, who seized control of the Islands with the backing of American troops sent ashore from a warship in Honolulu Harbor. To this “superior force of the United States of America,” Queen Lili`uokalani yielded her throne, under protest, in order to avoid bloodshed, trusting that the United States government would right the wrong that had been done to her and the Hawaiian people.

It is important to recall that, unlike the hereditary rulers of Europe, Hawaii’s last two Kings were actually elected to that office by democratic vote. Kalakaua and his sister Lili`uokalani were well-educated, intelligent, skilled in social graces, and equally at home with Hawaiian traditions and court ceremony. Above all, they were deeply concerned about the well-being of the Hawaiian people and maintaining the independence of the kingdom. They saw no reason to relinquish their independence solely to make already rich Americans richer still.

Note that the queen surrendered Hawaii’s sovereignty not to the revolutionaries but to the “superior force of the United States of America”. This firmly put the United States in the legal position of having invaded and overthrown the government of a foreign nation without provocation.

    • Grace July 2, 2012 at 3:31 pm

I do agree with Jen in that that he seems to be more like Aquarius rising even though the other chart puts him at Cancer rising- I wonder if he might have an intercepted first house. As obama could fit the Leo/Cancer ascendant. But, not Cancer along rising.

  6. Chris Brennan July 2, 2012 at 4:18 am

I think that I recall her saying that she wasn’t a birther, but she just thought that the other chart worked better, for whatever reason, and that was why she doubted the birth time.

    • July 2, 2012 at 7:10 am

I did see that Chris, but you might remember when we all thought that Susan Boyle’s original (later proved incorrect) chart worked better than the actual birth certificate chart. I think that when we attempt rectification of birth certificate charts because of what works better based on our (likely incorrect) perceptions of the person we are sliding down a very slippery slope. When we are lucky enough to have a birth certificate I feel it’s best to use actual data rather than our own assumptions.

      • Chris Brennan July 2, 2012 at 7:18 am

Oh yeah, I totally agree with you Lynn. I was just trying to respond to Jen’s comment above where she was wondering if Hathaway is a birther, and if that was the reason why she said that she questioned the official birth time.

        • July 2, 2012 at 8:03 am

          OK! thanks Chris.

[…] This is part II of a series, you can catch up on part I here. […]

  8. Connie Foster September 9, 2012 at 1:49 am

I think Obama’s chart shows him changing homes. Also Romney and his VP both have better days on the swearing in day. I think Obama will win the popular vote and Romney will win the electorial college. That may be the mercury retrograde effect. I also think that explains why so many astrologers think Obama is going to win.

  9. Astrology Guy September 10, 2012 at 8:26 am

I agree with Connie Foster. In order to even be a presidential or vice presidential nominee, one has to have some pretty big aspects going on, so it’s not very easy to tell who will win or lose based on election day aspects. What I look for are coronation-y aspects for the inauguration. Romney will have Neptune exactly at his 10 house cusp on inauguration day; Ryan will have Neptune at the cusp of his 4th. Romney will have Jupiter sitting in his first house in an exact trine to his MC, with his MC also receiving a semi-sextile from Chiron in the 10th house. On inauguration day, Ryan will have Saturn in close square to his Sun-Venus conjunction.

Joe Biden’s aspects for inauguration day look okay. The Jupiter-Neptune square straddles his asc-dsc axis. Obama’s aspects don’t all look terrible either, as he will have Neptune squaring his MC on inauguration day with the Sun and Mercury sextile his MC. But, perhaps most telling of all, the Moon-Mars square (Mars in Aqu) sits exactly on Obama’s asc – major suckage.

The polls aren’t showing it now, but the inaugural aspects suggest to me a Romney win.

  10. September 16, 2012 at 8:06 am

Edith Hathaway, who is mentioned in this post, sent me her comment by email since for some reason her comment wasn’t accepted by the system.

Thanks for your commentary on the 2012 Presidential Election. I see you have predicted a loss for the incumbent. As you know, I have predicted an Obama victory, and have done so for several years. We’ll see how it turns out.

This is a propos your comment: “Personally I have a hard time seeing Obama as a sensitive Cancerian ascendant.” I wanted to let you know there is a website where I have discussed my rationale for a 6:10 am (sidereal Cancer) Ascendant for Obama. I did a lot of work on the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election, and events leading up to it and up to and including the Inauguration. I also made predictions on each debate and then reported the results. The most information on the Cancer rising chart for Obama can be found here: You can go right to the section on Obama’s chart by clicking on “Review of the Charts of the Leading Presidential Candidates” (Obama, Hilary Clinton and John McCain). This was as of early 2008.

Using the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsha), this gives Obama an exact exalted Moon, but don’t forget Saturn and Jupiter aspect the Ascendant, both in Saturn’s sign of Capricorn. (This is using whole sign houses.) Saturn is in its best possible angle (Vedically we call this Digbala), and very strong in its own sign. Therefore Saturn has a dominant influence on this Cancer Ascendant, making it less prone to emotional displays. In his autobiography he describes being filled with “a longing for place, and a fixed and definite history.” Vedic astrology places a lot of power on the sign in the Ascendant, and in the case of Cancer, the concerns of the family and the nation are pivotal. Though he wrote a book called Dreams from my Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance, his mother played a huge role in forming his character. Anyway, this is obviously just a thumbnail sketch.

  11. September 16, 2012 at 8:09 am

I would just like to reply to Edith’s comment by restating my concern about using ascendants because we think they “work” based on what we know about them, even ignoring the whole controversy about whether or not Obama’s birth certificate is valid.

  12. Edith Hathaway September 16, 2012 at 1:09 pm

Thanks for posting my previous comment, Lynn. And yes, Chris Brennan is right – I am not a “birther.” (Thanks, Chris, for straightening that out!) The 6:10 am time (nearly sunrise) in Honolulu, HI Aug. 4, 1961 giving sidereal Cancer Ascendant, is a chart I came up with in Jan. 2008 when I was predicting Obama would win over Hillary Clinton as well as in Nov. 2008. I was definitely in the minority! This was before the “official” time became available, and when it did, I didn’t see how he could win with that chart, nor did some others. But I was sure he would win, using the earlier time plus my various cyclical charts. Sometimes we have to question the “official” chart, especially with public figures. I don’t do it unless I have reason to doubt the astrological chart matching up to the person.

  13. […] A friend of mine recently mentioned that a Democrat has never won a presidential election in a year when Saturn was transiting in sidereal Libra as this is a conservative placement. I am not sure if this is true. It would be easy enough to check if one of my readers wants to do that and get back to me. There is another contrary opinion about the outcome of the presidential election that I read recently on a blog by Western astrologer Here is the link to this article:… […]
