Sagittarius New Moon December 7th: Begin a new adventure!

Sagittarius New MoonThis New Moon in Sagittarius brings with it an opportunity to begin a new adventure.  The New Moon is a fresh new start – the heart (Moon) unites with the conscious intent (Sun) to forge a new direction, and in Sagittarius the sky is the limit.  Sagittarius governs travel, whether travel of the mind and the heart, or of the body through space and time.  This is a time to expand and seek a new experience that opens up our hearts and souls to greater magic and wonder than we ever dreamed possible.

Sagittarius periods feel lucky, and this one is no exception with Jupiter, the planet of luck and good fortune, tightly aligned with the New Moon, amplifying even more the potential for greater awareness and opportunities.  However, all is not perfectly rosy at this New Moon.  Mars, the planet of aggression and desire, is in the spiritual yet potentially confusing sign of Pisces which can be somewhat challenging to begin with, and it aligns with Neptune as well which is a doubling of the desire for transcendence and perhaps even escapism which can cause confusion.  The combination of Pisces’s yearning to transcend this mundane reality with the Sagittarius pull towards greener pastures can create problems if we fail to keep our feet on the ground.

Geeky astrological detail:  While Pisces and Sagittarius form a natural square and are therefore in conflict with each other, they are also linked by Jupiter which rules both signs.  Using Jupiter as the figurative North Star to guide us is the key to maximizing the potential of the New Moon.

However, this Pisces/Sagittarius influence is not necessarily negative – if it is channeled into creativity or if we absorb ourselves in experiences of […]

Social media, depression and Pluto in Sagittarius

Recent news articles have warned of a growing epidemic of depression, loneliness and isolation due to social media.  While social media ostensibly makes it easier to connect with others, online contacts do not have the same quality of connection as face to face communication.  In addition, we often forget that our online presence is carefully curated to show only the highlights of people’s lives and not the backstory, and our lives pale in comparison.  This is especially true of Instagram, where professional influencers use carefully crafted images to sell products based on an idealized lifestyle.  This of course is nothing new – advertisers have been doing this since time immemorial.  But with Instagram we can potentially spend hours and hours each day in envy of the idealized lives of beautiful people and gorgeous glossy photos.

The rise of depression is especially notable in teens, who were born while Pluto was in Sagittarius between 1995 and 2008. Pluto moves through a sign approximately every 12 to 30 years, and each sign that Pluto moves through marks a new generation with a new set of issues and priorities (other posts on generations can be found here).

Sometimes called “Generation Z” and described by social scientists as being born between 1995 and 2009 (Pluto was in Sagittarius between 1995 and 2008 making this a very close fit),  this generation is finding it difficult to live in today’s Capricornian world, with both Saturn and Pluto traveling through Capricorn which is more about success and achievement.  Sagittarius bestows an open mind and an eagerness to explore other cultures – it often tends to be fascinated with the media, philosophy and religion.  Sagittarius is optimistic and needs the freedom to adventure and […]

Thanksgiving Gemini full moon makes everything possible

The Sun enters Sagittarius on the 22nd, ending the Scorpio season and beginning the festivities of the holiday season, and the Sagittarius season begins with a Full Moon on the 23rd at the very first degree of Gemini opposite the Sagittarius Sun.  The Gemini/Sag polarity is all about collecting and assimilating information – this is a time to open the mind and see what drops into it.  It’s time to keep an open mind, and prepare for an awakening and a shift in belief systems where necessary.

Gemini is the trickster – under its influence things are not always what they appear.  But there is a flexibility and adaptability available to us now which can offer a change of perspective and awareness.

This Full Moon has a special abundance of positive Jupiter Juju with Jupiter aligned with the Sun and opposed by the Moon, helping to instill a new level of confidence you never dreamed possible.

Full Moons are the peak of the lunar cycle – the lunar light is in ascendance over the solar conscious experience, and the emotional intensity available to us can be channeled through the Will in order to create real Magic.   This Full Moon is energized by Mars which helps to focus the power of it, and because Mars is in Pisces the power is softened and allowed to be sweet yet intense.

Sometimes lunar events are sweet and mild, and sometimes they are potent and rocky.  This Gemini Full Moon is loaded with potential, as well as the fuel to light the fire to help us to accomplish great things.

Some things to keep in mind to get the most out of this Full Moon:

  • Reality can change in an instant, so be prepared for a […]

Happy Thanksgiving to my readers, I give thanks to you ❤️

thanksgiving gratitudeToday is not only Thanksgiving in the US, but it’s also the thirteenth Blogiversary of Astrological Musings.  In 2005 my sister, already a blogger, helped me get started on the Thanksgiving holiday and the rest is history.  I cherish the fact that many of you have been with me practically from the beginning, and grateful for all of you who have found me over the years.

Not too many of us in the United States are left with the illusion that the first Thanksgiving was a romantic feast where native Americans and white folks forged a beautiful friendship that lasted hundreds of years.  Most of us know the tragedy and devastation that European settlement of the US brought.  And lots of people don’t celebrate Thanksgiving as a result.
But if we forget about the Pilgrims and gorging on the traditional 10-course meal from which it takes weeks to recover, we end up with a day to give thanks.  Finding something to be grateful for, even in the midst of a miserable time in our lives, is one of the most healing things we can do.  Back in 1910 metaphysician Wallace Wattles wrote, “Gratitude brings your whole mind into closer harmony with the creative energies of the universe,” and since then this idea has really taken hold and become a part of daily rituals for many of us.

When we experience gratitude we open our hearts and minds and counteract the contraction of fear and doubt.  A gratitude practice is a very useful tool.  It is human nature not to pay attention to the good things in our life and to take them for granted; a daily review of the […]

The roots of political orientation in personality

A portion of this post comes from an earlier article, but today’s political world is even more polarized than it was when this article was first written so the article is even more relevant.

[A 2007 scientific study] revealed that political orientation is related to differences in the way different brains process information.

Participants were college students whose politics ranged from “very liberal” to “very conservative.” Scientists instructed them to tap a keyboard when an M appeared on a computer monitor and to refrain from tapping when they saw a W.

M appeared four times more frequently than W, conditioning participants to press a key in knee-jerk fashion whenever they saw a letter.

The participants were wired to an electroencephalograph that recorded activity in their anterior cingulate cortex, the part of the brain that detects conflicts between a habitual tendency (pressing a key) and a correct response (not pressing the key). Liberals had more brain activity and made fewer mistakes than conservatives when they saw a W, researchers said. Liberals and conservatives were equally accurate in recognizing M.

Researchers obtained the same results when they repeated the experiment in reverse, asking another set of participants to tap when they saw W.

Frank J. Sulloway, a researcher at the Institute of Personality and Social Research, at the University of California, Berkeley, who was not involved in the study, said results “provided an elegant demonstration that individual differences on a conservative-liberal dimension are strongly related to brain activity.”

Lead author David Amodio, an assistant professor of psychology at NYU, cautioned that the study looked at a narrow slice of human behavior and that it would be a mistake to conclude that one political orientation was better than another. The tendency of conservatives to block distracting information could […]
