Psychiatric drugs: A modern distraction

A new study out of Germany shows that only 6% of all psychiatric drugs show any added benefit (in a study which found that 58% of ALL drugs showed no added benefit).

As a child of the ’60s, it is peculiar to me that parents today are GIVING drugs to their kids. The use of drug stimulants for children exploded between 1991 and 1995, and antidepressant prescriptions nearly doubled during the same period – coinciding with the conjunction of Uranus and Neptune.  This is not surprising – Uranus rules electricity and radical behavior and is sometimes associated with mental disorders if afflicted in the natal chart.  Neptune presides over experiences that take us beyond the mundane, into spiritual bliss or addiction, and is also associated with consciousness altering substances.  By 2014, 7% of all children between age 6 and 17 were taking some sort of psychiatric drug, mostly for ADHD.  More than twice as many boys were prescribed as girls – not surprising since boys are often more active than girls.

I have no wish to minimize the danger of true psychiatric disorders which require ongoing medication such as bipolar or psychotic episodes, or a serious depression or panic disorder which requires short-term medication to help the patient move through a difficult time. But I am concerned about our tendency in the modern world to avoid our own emotions and medicate our children into subservience.

The astrological birthchart identifies certain predispositions in our personality and emotional makeup. Acting as a map, the birthchart identifies our strength and challenges, and shows the way to navigate through our difficulties. Often situations that we find devastating later bring us great joy and wisdom that we would never have gained […]

The astrology of Elizabeth Warren, presidential candidate 2020

Embed from Getty Images

Although this is a political post, I am attempting to keep it free from bias on my end.  Please do the same in the comments!  This is an astrological blog and here we look at the astrology behind the politics rather than the politics themselves.  There are plenty of other places for those discussions.

Elizabeth Warren is currently polling at #4 in the long list of Democratic candidates for the presidency, and she is #3 in my series of profiles (actually, Harris is now polling at #3, we’ll look at Harris next).  See also Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders, profiled in these pages.

Elizabeth Warren has a long academic history and was a debate champion in high school. Her childhood was apparently marked by economic deprivation, going to work at the age of 13 to help her family pay medical bills from her father’s illness. After graduating from law school she specialized in bankruptcy law and has a longtime interest in families who undergo bankruptcy due to economic hardship.

The astrological chart for Elizabeth Warren (born June 22, 1949 in Oklahoma, no birth time available) shows that she has the Sun in Cancer, the sign of emotional sensitivity and nurturing.  One thing I have noticed about Cancer Sun people is that they CARE – about everything.  Everyone’s suffering becomes particularly poignant and personal for people with a strong Cancerian element in their chart, and Warren also has Venus (relating) in Cancer which intensifies this even more.  That said, her Sun is very tightly conjunct Uranus, the planet of rebellion and change.  She is a visionary and has an eye for outmoded patterns and institutions which are no longer working, and a desire to create change to […]

The astrological implications of the Jeffrey Epstein case including Me Too

Embed from Getty Images

Note: Yes, I know that Clinton was also an associate of Epstein. I attempted to give equal time by inserting a photo of Epstein and Clinton, but was unable to find one. I believe that ALL criminals connected to this case should be prosecuted.

Jeffrey Epstein is a financial adviser to billionaires who began his career as a physics and calculus professor before moving on to finance.  He was arrested in New York on Saturday on charges of sex trafficking of children* after new complainants emerged in the district of New York, resulting in the sealed files from the Florida trial and plea deal to be unsealed.

This case more than any other in recent memory (other than perhaps the Harvey Weinstein story) exemplifies the ability of the rich and powerful to get away with crimes against the weak and unrepresented.  The astrology of this time vividly tells the story, with Saturn (tests and challenges) conjunct Pluto (power and secrets), both in the sign of Capricorn (the structures of society).  Back in April I wrote:

Saturn (tests and challenges) and Pluto (creative destruction) are at their closest point now until they collide in their official conjunction in January of 2020.  The combination of these two planets generally denotes a destructive force that can clear the path of any debris that is interfering with the natural movement of the Universe towards balance.  This has the potential to be a positive force, but it is also associated with contraction and challenge, especially now since both planets are in the contracting sign of Capricorn. They are aligned with the South Node of the past, denoting that some karmic cleanup is bound to occur.

The chickens are coming home to roost.  There are a great many chickens roosting in this particular horror of a scandal, […]

Planetary news this week! Mercury retrograde, Chiron and Mars

Chiron astrologyLast week’s eclipse brought the expected earthquakes and seismic events like the big one in Ridgecrest, California, and may have affected you personally as it did me – back spasms and some emotional catharsis was the manifestation of the eclipse in Cancer for me!

Mercury retrograde, and Mars

This week we have Mercury, the mental planet which just turned retrograde and is about to cross paths with Mars, the action planet.  As I wrote the other day:

This particular retrograde period begins with Mercury in the sign of Leo – the sign that celebrates the Self and seeks joy in everything.  Mercury is pretty happy in Leo – it’s love for movement and discussion is enhanced by Leo’s expansive view of the world.  But Mercury is aligned with Mars right now, and that alignment will tighten when Mercury turns retrograde on July 7th.  Expect tempers to flare, resulting in arguments or heated discussions.  Both planets are in Leo which can be a bit self-righteous, especially between July 6th and the 9th,

and then Mars faces off against Uranus (shock and rebellion) between the 9th and the 11th.   During this period we may be tempted to act more impulsively which is NOT a good idea under Mercury retrograde.  Try to reconsider every decision, and then reconsider it again.

Chiron changes direction

Chiron, the planet of wounding and healing, turns retrograde this week.  Any planet about to change direction slows down to a standstill just as a car making a U-turn will do.  If we are experiencing a planetary cycle involving that planet and our own chart, it will be especially powerful when that planet is virtually still, shining a laser beam of energy into our psyche so this can […]

Sunday inspiration: Life is a Rhythmic Dance

Art by Lincoln Harrison

Inspiration from my friend, astrologer Robert Wilkinson:

Each of the parts of our lives, inner and outer, has a rhythm of its own. Our bodies, feelings, mind and higher Self all have their rhythms of appearance and disappearance, increasing and decreasing, ebbing and flowing. Our relationships have their own rhythms of coming and going, merging and doing one’s own thing. There is no part of our lives that doesn’t have fluxuation, except for our Inner Flame. Astrology is the art and science of examining these changes, and noting what is happening and when, one is able to estimate the next time we will be in major change and what factors are involved. This helps us evolve our response-abilities, and lead to a more natural and perfect self-expression.

Every major change we confront in our life is showing us what is ending, and what is beginning. Even in the middle of a larger process, every significant change in any area of our life affects other areas. These changes show us how we must change to restore harmony in our life. Ultimately every part of our being is seeking to be in harmony with every other part of our life. That’s what we call “happiness.” When everything works in harmony in our lives, when our inner self is in harmony with our world and our relationships, we feel that harmony and want it to continue. Our heart’s desire for our lower self is for it to have abundance, love, and perfect self-expression. Major changes show us the way to these things, but our lower self has habits and opinions and fears that often obstruct our happiness. Then the […]
