The Leo New Moon offers an opportunity to shine

Art by Larry Landolfi

The Moon is new in Leo, the first lunar event since the eclipses of July.  Leo is the sign that celebrates the Self – the healthy Ego, open-hearted, generous and full of life and an ability to embrace joy.  Many of us have been having a very difficult time under the planetary conditions of the past couple of months, and this Leo New Moon offers an opportunity, should we accept it, to look for the silver thread that lines every cloud.

The New Moon is flanked by Venus on one side and Mars on the other – all in Leo.  This is a big burst of Sun-ruled energy to both soften the hard edges of our experience (Venus) and motivate and inspire us to take action (Mars).  All of this outgoing Leo energy is harmonized through a trine to Jupiter, planet of abundance and optimism, in its own sign of Sagittarius where it is particularly abundant and optimistic.

There is a darker and deeper side to this New Moon, though.  Mercury (mind and communication),  now direct (thank goodness!) is opposed by Pluto, leading to obsessive thinking.  Pluto can also provide us with deep insight, should we take the time to listen to our inner voice.  And Saturn, planet of tests and challenges, is still aligned with the South Node of the past, demanding that we fix our mistakes and learn their lessons.

At this Leo New Moon, the central question is:  What regrets or sorrows from the past am I holding onto which are keeping me from finding true joy in my life?  Am I ready to fully open my heart to happiness, or are there issues and resistance that are keeping […]

Planetary news this week: Mercury turns direct! And the Leo New Moon

Deviant Art

These weekly posts focus on the microcosm of the smaller planetary cycles.  For an overview of the larger cycles and how they affect our inner and outer worlds, be sure to subscribe to my monthly Planetary Illuminations report

Thanks to the proliferation of astrological information on the Internet, most people know about Mercury retrograde – the pesky little jokester planet which reverses course for three weeks, four times a year, often forcing us to retrace our steps and discover our mistakes.  “Oh, I didn’t realize that…”  “I thought you said…” “Please cancel my appointment…” – these are all the kinds of things that are said while Mercury is retrograde.

Mercury is about to turn direct again on the 31st, but it takes a few days for its motion to pick back up and for things to get back to normal.  So for the next week or so, remain aware and look back to see if any details have been dropped and need to be corrected.

The Sun and Venus are locked in an embrace that culminates midway through August – this is a particularly favorable planetary combination that fosters ease and flow, especially if you have planets between 15-25 degrees of the fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius).  The Sun represents the Self – our inner vitality, our sense of purpose.  Venus is the principle of attraction, including our relationships with others and our aesthetic tastes.  The two together combine in a lovely cocktail of beauty and harmony for the next couple of weeks, but that harmony will be shaken up from time to time by a stressful aspect from Uranus, planet of radical and abrupt change.  Our relationships with others […]

Sunday inspiration: It’s not too late

Smell of thunderstorm by Anton Petrus on 500px.com

Art by Anton Petrus

It’s not too late… the angel said.
Even though the world’s a mess…
Even though you’re not as young…
Even though you’ve made mistakes and have been afraid
It’s not too late…
And then I saw the world through the angels’ eyes…
I saw the colors I could paint
The bridges I could build
The lives that I could touch
The dreams that could still come true
And it became very clear to me…
That it’s not too late.

The astrology of Kamala Harris’s run for president in 2020

Embed from Getty Images

This is fourth in a series of profiles of Democratic candidates running for president in 2020.  While I have made every effort to appear impartial, my personal bias may bleed through and for that I apologize in advance.  Other profiles can be found here: Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren.

Like many others, I first noticed Kamala Harris during the Brett Kavanaugh hearings.  Her composure and eloquence impressed me, as did her ability to make a devastating point with steely precision such as when she asked Kavanaugh, regarding the abortion law question, if he knew of any laws “that the government has power to make over the male body[.]”

As of the date of this writing, Harris is #4 in most polls.  We are fortunate to have accurate birth information for Harris; a birth certificate was provided to the Mountain Astrologer magazine.  Her Sun is in late Libra, the sign of tact and diplomacy.  The Libra personality can be the consummate salesperson as there is an innate sense of what people are looking for and an ability to morph into the personality that will provide it.  This often makes them extremely likeable but depending on other factors, the need to be liked does not build the kind of resilience that is required for the presidency.

Fortunately for Harris, she was born under an Aries Full Moon, ruled by the fire of Mars.  The balance and interplay between the “iron fist in the velvet glove” of the Libra Sun with the fiery Aries Moon has been interesting to watch.  She disarms the enemy with a smile and then attacks with that […]

Sunday inspiration: Stillness is vital to the world of the soul

Stillness is vital to the world of the soul. If as you age you become more still, you will discover that stillness can be a great companion. The fragments of your life will have time to unify, and the places where your soul-shelter is wounded or broken will have time to knit and heal. You will be able to return to yourself. In this stillness, you will engage your soul. Many people miss out on themselves completely as they journey through life. They know others, they know places, they know skills, they know their work, but tragically, they do not know themselves at all. Aging can be a lovely time of ripening when you actually meet yourself, indeed maybe for the first time. There are beautiful lines from T. S. Eliot that say:

‘And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.’

John O’Donohue, from his book Anam Cara

I was at music camp last week and for the first time I didn’t bring my laptop.  I had only a phone which meant I didn’t post to this blog and only minimally on Facebook and instead immersed myself in music and community.  This completely changed the experience for me in a wonderful way that added depth and resonance.

The older I get the more I treasure stillness and this quality of slowing down time and the world around us so that we can really settle into our selves and begin to feel comfortable there.  I hope I can remember this and continue to seek these moments of stillness and treasure them, especially in these times of great stress and global conflict.  Though the […]
