This Scorpio Full Moon is a powerful catharsis

The Full Moon on May 18, 2019 is in the passionate sign of Scorpio. The Full Moon occurs when the Sun is opposite the Moon, and brings about the need for balance and integration. Here the centerpoint occurs between the peaceful harmony and stability of Taurus and the fiery emotional depth of Scorpio. With any opposition, integration is required as the two opposite ends of the spectrum seek expression. While we penetrate deep into the realm of feeling (Scorpio), we also require a sense of balance and serenity (Taurus) in order to gain the true power of this Full Moon.

Both the Sun and Moon are in harmony with both Saturn and Pluto – Saturn helps to provide stability and encourage us to anchor into the practical realm, while the transformative power of Pluto, as the modern ruler of Scorpio, works in tandem with the Scorpio energy to unleash the raw energies of emotion.

Although six planets are in earth signs, holding our feet to the Earth and encouraging us to find state footing in the “real” world. Earth puts aside emotion and feelings, whereas the watery element of Scorpio is consumed by feelings. Supporting this focus on emotion and intuition is Mars, planet of energy and motivation, which has just entered Cancer where it stimulates us to react from our emotions rather than reason.

Intensifying this emotional reactivity is a challenging square from Mars to Chiron, planet of wounding and healing. For a few days before and after this Full Moon, you can expect just about everyone to be more touchy than usual, despite the four planets in Taurus which seek calm and stability. In addition, Venus (relating) is conjunct Uranus (radical behavior), making it less likely that the placidity of Taurus […]

Planetary news this week: Astrological forecast for May 13-20, 2019

This week offers some respite from the planetary intensity we’ve been seeing lately.  Between May 11th and the 15th, we see only mild and pleasant planetary alignments that offer support and help us to regain our balance if we’re feeling out of sorts.

We do see two planets changing signs on the 15th:  Venus will move from fiery Aries to stable Taurus. Venus is quite happy there as the peaceful nature of Taurus supports the Venusian urge to form relationships and experience more beauty and equanimity in life.  This period while Venus is in Taurus, between May 15th and June 8th, is excellent for anything Venusian:  wealth, beauty activities, relationships of all kinds, love and harmony.   This is not a particularly emotional time, or a time in which processing of emotional stuff will be very easy or even desired.

Mars also changes signs on the 15th, moving from Gemini to Cancer.  Mars is NOT particularly happy in Cancer where it tends to be touchy and reactive rather than proactive and self-initiating.  While Mars is in Cancer (between May 15th and July 1st), our drive, desires, and ability to manifest our personal will, all of which Mars motivates, will be colored by our emotional sensitivities.  Mars is said to be in its fall in Cancer because Cancer is emotionally reactive; it is more difficult to be clear about our motivations and the true desires.  Cancer is the sign of nurturing and caring for others, and there is the potential for codependent behavior because of the focus on the needs of other people in an effort to care for oneself.

The Scorpio Full Moon on the 18th could bring out some of these issues since […]

Astrology in my world: Sunday tribe poetry

“Tell your story.
Shout it. Write it.
Whisper it if you have to.
But tell it.
Some won’t understand it.
Some will outright reject it.
But many will
thank you for it.
And then the most
magical thing will happen.
One by one, voices will start
whispering, ‘Me, too.’
And your tribe will gather.
And you will never
feel alone again.”

–L.R. Knost

I found this poem in a wonderful Facebook group called “” and it really resonated with me because of my current Saturn transit.  All of us are experiencing a tightening of the conjunction between Saturn (tests and challenges) and Pluto (total transformation) to some degree.  The combination of these two planets generally denotes a destructive force that can clear the path of any debris that is interfering with the natural movement of the Universe towards balance.  This has the potential to be a positive force, but it is also associated with contraction and challenge, especially now since both planets are in the contracting sign of Capricorn.  This week I’ll be writing a comprehensive post about this alignment, which just gives us a sneak peek this summer and culminates in 2020.

Anyone who has planets between 18 and 26 degrees of Capricorn, Cancer, Libra and Aries will be affected more personally by this planetary alignment (if you want to know how you are affected leave your birth data in the comments and I’ll tell you), and I am one of those people.  I have four planets in those degrees, including my own Saturn/Sun conjunction.  This Saturn/Sun conjunction is a rough challenge that often brings a deep sense of loneliness and isolation.  The beauty though of Saturn is that if you can live through the difficult early years, the years after midlife are so much easier.  I […]

A journey from modern Iraq back into ancient wisdom and modern science

This article was originally posted in 2009.  Astrologer connecting the Yezidi, a Kurdish people on the border of Syria and Iraq, back to the , a collection of Arabic texts that was widely used by mages during the Renaissance period.  He then draws connections back to the Sabians of Harran, adding a layer of interest to  on the Sabian Symbols,

He then goes back to Hermes Trismegistus, a fascinating quasi-mythological figure who appears to combine the Greek Hermes with the Egyptian Thoth, leading many (including myself) to postulate that perhaps those two were actually the same being – perhaps an Atlantean survivor who served as the messenger of ancient wisdom (Hermes and Thoth are both gods of knowledge and magic).  The saying “as above, so below” is attributed to Hermes Trismegistus – the Thrice Great.

From Dave’s article:

The dictum “as above, so below” describes the connection between the core level of reality experienced by humans and the movements of the heavenly bodies. In contemporary astrology, it is generally thought that planetary phenomena cause or are reflected in events on Earth. However, the magical tradition takes this concept one step further by harnessing or cocreating with the planetary phenomena. Many hermeticists feel that these acts even comprise a spiritual practice because by working with the planets, they come closer to “the one” (Warnock “Hermetic Gnosis).

This ancient magical practice of working with the energy of the planets in an alchemical process rather than in a relationship where a dependency on one’s fate is created.  Dave concludes,

Approaching the planets as forces which can be worked with and embodied, the mage is in a position of active engagement with the solar […]
