Saturn sextile Neptune 2019: Creating structure for inspiration

Art by Fiona Owen

Two of the most significant planetary cycles for 2019 are the challenging square alignment between Jupiter’s expansive tendencies and Neptune’s penchant to transcend (or avoid) material reality.  The “hard angle” planetary interactions such as the square (90 degrees) and opposition (180 degrees) tends to give us more of the challenging aspects of the planetary cycle.  The Jupiter and Neptune dance dissolving the restrictions of the material world could potentially become more of a distraction into the world of self-deception and illusion, encouraged by Jupiter’s desire to continue to expand and seek larger and ever greater experiences.  Read more about the Jupiter/Neptune alignment here

Fortunately, Saturn will bring its stabilizing influence into this dance, harmonizing in a sextile (60 degree) aspect to Neptune which helps to provide support and a solid foundation to Neptune’s creative inspiration and longing for spiritual transcendence. Where Neptune can inspire us to dream and imagine, Saturn encourages us to put those dreams to work.  And where Saturn’s influence can become somewhat dull as we work steadfastly towards our goals, Neptune adds a coating of magical fairy dust to take our goals and wishes into a new dimension.

This cycle will last throughout the year, and the middle phase of the harmonious Saturn/Neptune cycle in June will coincide with a complex system that includes Mars and Mercury in Cancer (emotional and frustrating) opposing Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn (restricting), as well as the second phase of the Jupiter/Neptune square.  That’s a whole lot of complex energies, some of which support each other and some which compete for our conscious attention.

May and June will be a complicated time, so stay tuned!

Here are the important dates for this planetary cycle:

Finding the power in anger: A Mars story co-starring Black Moon Lilith

Black Moon LilithI recently came across .  As many of you know, the power of anger as expressed through Mars in the natal chart is a speciality of mine, probably because my own Mars is conjunct the little planet Chiron which deals with soul wounds, so I’ve had to do a lot of healing around this myself.  Mars is of course named after the Roman God of War (Ares in Greek), and the astrological Mars presides over what I like to call the “continuum of anger.”  Mars experiences include desire and/or need, motivation, inspiration, frustration, anger, rage – all of which have a place in this continuum.

This article includes a photo of the Oxford English Dictionary with 36 entries describing the continuum of anger, from “annoyed” and “displeased” to “livid and choleric.”  Anger is not just one emotion – it’s a spectrum of reactions to the simple fact that our desires and needs have been ignored.

Anger takes several steps to evolve:

  • First we have a desire and experience motivation and inspiration to obtain that desire, or a need that has been ignored or criticized.
  • If our desire or our needs are thwarted, we experience frustration.
  • If our desires and needs are continually thwarted, we become angry.
  • At a certain point that anger will boil into rage, and for some people this rage becomes a constant reaction point.

From the article:

All over the US, and around the world, women are becoming more intimate with the layers of their anger. We’re becoming more articulate and expressive of it. More studied in the ways it knits together the personal, professional, and political. And more conscious of the immense, historic, paradigm-shifting power of it.

This has all […]

Planetary news this week! January 21, 2019

January horoscopesOn the heels of a Full Moon, Supermoon and lunar eclipse last night, the Moon continues to move through Leo where it helps to expand our hearts and find our inner enthusiasm.  Meanwhile Mars (assertive energy) is nearing the midpoint of its trip to Aries, but a challenge from Saturn could cause some trouble over the next few days as our enthusiasm and motivation (Mars) is stressed by Saturn’s restrictions and a sense of limitation.  This is a good time to proceed slowly towards perfection rather than run impulsively into the fire of our desire (wait a minute, that is poetry!).

Venus (love and beauty) aligns with bountiful Jupiter over the next few days, and both planets are in the optimistic sign of Sagittarius.  Optimism and faith abounds now, but that pesky Saturn influence may put the kibosh on plans temporarily.

Between the 22nd and 24th Mercury is very active which will stimulate mental activity and enhance communication.  Mercury aligns with the South Node of the past on the 21st, turning our thoughts for a day or two to learn more about where we’ve come from so that we can better serve our future,  just before it moves into Aquarius on the 24th and aligns with the Sun.  When Mercury is in Aquarius, the sign of the scientist and wizard/inventor, our minds are just a bit sharper – reasoning takes precedence over raw emotion and we are able to think clearly and with innate wisdom.  There is not much water influence, other than Chiron and Neptune, and since water tends to enhance our connection to feelings and emotion we may find ourselves strongly oriented in the head and mental body.

Our drive and energy will find easier expression when Mars […]

What I believe: Making sense of tragedy

If there is a meaning in life at all, then there must be a meaning in suffering. Suffering is an ineradicable part of life, even as fate and death. Without suffering and death human life cannot be complete.  –Viktor Frankl

finding meaning in life

This week a friend of mine went to work and never came home.  His car was hit by a joyrider driving over 100 mph and he died of his injuries in the hospital, leaving behind a beautiful family with two young boys and a loving wife.   He was active in our community and left a wide swath of grief as we attempt to make some kind of sense of this tragedy.

Perhaps my friend’s wife, who in the span of 36 hours became a new widow, will experience a great blessing from this horrific event – I certainly hope that this is the case.  One of my clients who lost her healthy husband over a year ago after a short illness struggles to understand how this could have happened.  What about the parents of the children who have died in these school shootings?  How can we find meaning in this?

Some will say “It’s all part of God’s plan.”  I don’t know if that is enough.   I do believe that some things are fated and beyond our control.  I do believe that we have a contract for our life and we do come into this life with an astrological chart that describes our psychological tendencies and a path that we are likely to take.  Our free will helps us to make some choices along the way, but when a car hits you from behind at 100 mph there is no choice involved there.  That is fate.  How to […]

Planetary news this week: Jupiter/Neptune & the Supermoon Eclipse!

Supermoon eclipse.   There is a lot of buzz and excitement around the lunar eclipse on January 20th-21st (EST) because it’s a Supermoon (tm ), meaning the Moon is at perigee, its closest orbit to Earth.  This means the Moon appears larger (because it is larger and lower in the sky, it will appear to be a red color and is therefore called a Blood Moon).  Astrologer Richard Nolle has connected Supermoon events to intensified weather and geological events such as earthquakes and severe storms.  With the Moon having a stronger effect than usual on the Earth, we can be certain that the effect on us as individuals will also be more powerful.  Eclipses are more intense in the areas in which they are visible, and this eclipse will be particularly powerful for those of us in North and South America.

This Super Full Moon is a total eclipse astronomically, because the Moon will be obscured by the Sun, and this eclipse will last for a very long time – nearly an hour, depending upon your location ( for more details about the eclipse at your particular location).  Astrologically, the eclipse is not as powerful because the lunar nodes are in a different sign from the Sun and Moon and therefore not drawing as much power as if they were in the same sign.

With the Sun in Aquarius opposing the Moon in Leo, questions of our own personal journey (Leo) relative to our transpersonal place in the world (Aquarius) will be highlighted.  Three planets in Capricorn (Saturn, Pluto and Mercury) all ground us to the Earth and ensure that we pay attention to business […]
