Happy Mother’s Day from Astrological Musings

mother's day Mother and Baby by Gustav Klimt

No wonder mothers have their own day – one could argue that they are the single biggest influence on our lives. A father can be absent at a birth, but never the mother! We spend nine months in the womb of our mothers, wrapped in her energy imprint and (some say) absorbing her experiences. She is the first human that we meet upon emergence from her womb, and if we are immediately taken away the longing of separation persists throughout our lives.

The astrological Moon represents our relationship with our mother, and sometimes describes the mother herself.  Each sibling in a family may have a completely different experience of the mother, and not understand why their siblings feel differently about the mother than they themselves do.  My own Moon conjoins Pluto, the planet of  and for much of my childhood I felt annhilated by and terrified of my mother.  We spent years without contact as I regained my footing after a difficult childhood.  My sister’s Moon is in Virgo, and she felt (and was) deeply criticized by our mother – a challenging relationship but different in its nature.

Any contact with Pluto shows a dynamic in one’s life that is exceedingly important, and despite long periods of separation I always felt attached to my mother and somewhat desperate to find some kind of resolution.  I’m happy to say that over the past ten years we have found that resolution and there has been a powerful transformation in our relationship with each other.  I tell this story to demonstrate that there is always hope for important relationships in our lives.

Often clients will come to me to better understand their children, and these […]

Dealing with fire: A flow chart

Some people, like my Aries friends, thrive on a heavy does of fire like the one we’re getting lately. They get energized and don’t mind the sleepless nights as they stay out late dancing the night away. Others of us are a little more disturbed by the force of what we may perceive to be chaos and forces that are beyond our control.

Things are a little easier now than they were when we had six planets in Aries fighting against a few more in Pisces, but there are still five planets in Aries and Mars, the ruler of Aries, is inching towards a conjunction to Jupiter which will expand that force of fire even more.  And let’s not forget Uranus, planet of radical action and electricity, is in Aries and will remain there for quite some time.

Perhaps that’s why there are record wildfires in Texas and California, even though it’s very early in the season, and why a torrent of electromagnetic energy unleashed 62 tornadoes in North Carolina in one day.

Fortunately for us, astrologer Shannon Garcia has provided us with a flow chart to help us effectively channel this energy.  Check it out here.

Musings on the death of Osama bin Laden

death of osama bin ladenAlthough March 10 1957 is commonly given as the date of birth for Osama bin Laden, This has not been certain enough for astrologers to rely on. While several sources, including an interview with bin Laden himself, have used the date of March 10, 1957 the US State Department records for some reason used July 30, 1957. For this reason, astrologers have not had a date of birth, much less a time, that was reliable enough to create a chart that was anything but speculative. According to Astrodatabank, an astrologer in Brussels named William de Rijke had a friend at Interpol who saw a copy of bin Laden’s birth records with a time of 10:58 am.  But this sounds fishy to me since they didn’t keep any kind of birth records in Saudi Arabia until the late 1950s, much less one with an accurate birth time. Astrologer Claire France Perez is quoted at Astrodatabank:

“I had acquired information from a Muslim historian, (on the Internet) who said bin Laden was born 3rd month, 10th day of the Muslim calendar year 1377. The FBI lists his DOB as March 10, 1957–the third month and tenth day of our calendar year–incorrectly transposing the Islamic days and months for ours, getting the year correctly. The March 10 1957 date confirms that the 3rd month and 10th day are what we are looking for.”

So I am reluctant to use this data as a chart for bin Laden. I am frankly not so sure that bin Laden hasn’t been dead for years.  Osama bin Laden was very much a public figure and seemed to relish making videos in which he thumbed his nose at the US after al […]

Skywatch is posted! And the Taurus New Moon

May Skywatch 2011Tune in later for a post about the death of Osama bin Laden, but for now Skywatch for May has been posted just in time for the Taurus New Moon. You can read the whole article here, or if you’re not on my mailing list you can see what you’re missing here and read the abridged version.

Here’s the important information for the first week of May and the New Moon which occurs on May 3rd (today!):

During the month of May we get a bit of a breather.  The intensity of April’s fire energy, with so many planets in Aries, has subsided and while Mars is still separating from a conjunction to Jupiter which has amplified (Jupiter) the force for activation (Mars), and there are still five planets in Aries, over the past few weeks we have hopefully been able to integrate the power of that fire so that it is less disturbing and perhaps more energizing and clarifying. In May there are no major planetary aspects, and most of the planetary interaction comes from the faster moving planets and last only a day or so.

The image of the phoenix bird (the firebird) is a powerful one for the element of fire.  We usually refer to the phoenix in connection with Scorpio because of the regeneration after death, but it is also a good descriptor of the power of fire which consumes everything in its path and leaves a clean slate behind.  This is the force of the element of fire that we can use for our benefit if we can learn to balance and use the force of fire, which is pure instinctive inspiration and motivation at its core, and not let it overwhelm […]

Happy May Day, and a few more Royal Wedding thoughts

Today is the first of May, widely celebrated by neo-pagans as Beltane, the fire festival which honors Bel, the god of fire.  Because Beltane is a “cross-quarter” festival, meaning it occurs at the halfway point between the equinox and solstice, it will not actually occur until May 5th when the Sun reaches 15 degrees Taurus. In any event, with so many planets still in Aries, including Mars and Jupiter which reach their peak conjunction today, a fire festival is an excellent way to channel some of the fiery energy that abounds right now.

astrology of the royal weddingI’d like to return briefly to the Royal Wedding discussion.  Many astrologers have pointed out the fact that the wedding chart shows the Moon void of course at 26 degrees Pisces, meaning that the Moon is unaspected and will not make aspects to any other planets until it reaches the next sign (Aries) which it did on Friday just after the wedding.  Electional charts (charts that are used to “elect” a particular date typically would never have a Moon void of course which suggests that an astrologer was probably not used in planning this wedding.  (Whether or not the void Moon has an impact in our daily lives is a matter of great debate and most astrologers agree that focusing on such minutiae is not always helpful in our daily lives.)

In any case, since the Moon in a wedding chart represents the heart of the marriage, that void Moon reinforces my sense that the emotional heart of this marriage will not take hold.

One of my readers commented that Dharmaruci has the best posts on the Royal Wedding and while normally I would be offended by a comment suggesting that another […]
