The Geminid meteor shower and the asteroid Phaethon

Geminid meteor showerBrrrr!!!!!!!!  If you can stay up past midnight tonight and tomorrow, you may enjoy the treat of hundreds of meteors falling before your very eyes.

The Geminids appear to emanate from the constellation of Gemini, but evidently originate from an asteroid called 3200 Phaethon and has been streaming for over 1,000 years, according to astronomers.

There are some fascinating connections here, because Phaethon was the name of the son of the Sun god Helios in Greek mythology.  He was killed by a thunderbolt from Zeus when he drove the solar chariot recklessly, threatening to burn up the earth.  In Ovid’s version of the story: “”…consider what impetuous force Turns stars and planets in a diff’rent course. I steer against their motions; nor am I Born back by all the current of the skye. But how cou’d you resist the orbs that roul In adverse whirls, and stem the rapid pole?”

According to Aristotle’s “Meteorology,” “Aristotle says, “…the stars…fell from heaven at the time of Phaethon’s downfall.”

In any case, be sure to bundle up if you attempt to view this sky show!  More tips to observe the meteor shower can be found here.

Saturn in Libra: The Gift of Beauty

We often think of Saturn as the “Celestial Taskmaster,” and grumble about his tests, challenges, delays and disappointments.  But we sometimes forget that he is also the giver of wisdom and the kind of strength that comes through overcoming adversity and difficult situations.

Beth Owl’s Daughter wrote a beautiful post about the that includes these words of wisdom:

Blessed is your gift of Beauty in all things,
and the beautiful body and spirit you have given me,
With which I am able to celebrate, create and participate.

This bead in my gratitude prayer beads can be a challenge for me. It is often quite difficult for me to say that I have a beautiful body and spirit.  Okay, maybe I can buy into having a beautiful spirit a littleeasier.  But beautiful body?

“Ha!” says the inner critic.  I was never the pretty one. I grew up in the shadow of a young mother who (I am not kidding!) was constantly and accurately compared to Elizabeth Taylor and Vivian Leigh. My sisterhas always been the beauty of the siblings, certainly not me. …

I knew early on, much to my mom’s despair, I was not cut out to be a girly girl, a prom queen, debutante, or sorority chick.  I was by turns a tomboy and a rebel and a hippie and a feminist.  The constraints and definitions of beauty for girls and women were dead wrong in my view, even when I was too young to know why. …

If there is beauty in all things (even the saddest, the grimmest, the most difficult), which I do believe, then there is beauty in me, too. And not only airy-fairy spiritual, but physical beauty.

I have arms and legs that move and do amazing things without me hardly even thinking about it. […]

A birthtime for Julian Assange

has been given a time of birth for Julian Assange, head of Wikileaks, from an unidentified source.  They write:

Our source has requested anonymity, which we are respecting. Both Tem and I felt that the circumstances through which we got the information, and some other details, suggest that this is an authentic time. The source personally viewed, but was not able to make a copy of, Mr. Assange’s birth certificate.

Update: our source clarified what s/he saw: “The birth record (is) from the registry which has appended to it a copy of the birth certificate but the hour was not on the certificate but on the record in the registry files.”

I am normally suspect of unidentified sources of birth times, and as you’ll read in the comments from Australian astrologers, the method of data collection appears to be somewhat suspect since birth records there evidently do not include birth times and can be obtained only by a relative.

Until there is more clarification on the source of the birth time I think it’s safer not to speculate on what the chart might be.

Thoughts on the upcoming Mercury retrograde

Mercury retrogradeThis Mercury retrograde period may be more challenging than some, especially during the first week (beginning around now until the 18th of December when Mercury retrogrades back into Sagittarius.

Mercury is in Capricorn now, where it wants to organize things and achieve something important.  Capricorn is all about goals and success, and it is not well-suited to the retrograde periods of Mercury which require reflection and a more inward focus that stimulates the subtle mind rather than the mental realm.

Mercury turns retrograde at about 5 degrees Capricorn, tightly conjunct Pluto.  Mercury has been conjunct Pluto since the New Moon a few days ago, and this influence remains as long as Mercury remains in Capricorn.  The combination of Mercury to Pluto brings intensity and passion to any ideas or thoughts that come to mind, and generally forces (because after all, it’s Pluto) us to face something secret and dark that we have been hiding from, if any such thing is lurking about anywhere.

Mars will be entering Capricorn shortly after this post is published, and it will then move into alignment with both Mercury and Pluto.  Mars rules aggression, rage and warfare, along with the simple energy that motivates and inspires us.  But when Mars aligns with Pluto and begins to radiate Pluto’s intensity, our desires become more urgent and power conflicts can result.

The North Node is also tied into this drama, pulling us relentlessly towards personal evolution and ensuring that we won’t fall backwards into the abyss if we fail to take the right steps.

This is a powerful combination of planets, and even though Mercury and Mars are usually fast movers, Mercury is moving slowly now as it prepares to change direction, and then after the retrograde […]
