Astrological Musings

The Planetary K index

If you follow , you might have noticed that they keep track of something called the Planetary K index.  Yesterday afternoon there was a strong solar wind stream that stimulated a higher level of geomagnetic activity and a K-index reading of 5, stimulating bright auroras like this one from Norway.  The editors at Spaceweather explain:

[T]he Earth’s magnetic field (let us say the ‘geomagnetic field’) is responding to a outwardly propagating disturbance from the Sun. As the geomagnetic field adjusts to this disturbance, various components of the Earth’s field change form, releasing magnetic energy and thereby accelerating charged particles to high energies. These particles, being charged, are forced to stream along the geomagnetic field lines. Some end up in the upper part of the earth’s neutral atmosphere and the auroral mechanism begins.

Our physical body is surrounded by an electromagnetic energy field, and the more sensitive we become energetically the more we are apt to discern the subtle changes in the earth’s geomagnetic field.  Since I have been watching the K-index I have noticed that I am noticeably more agitated when the K-index is elevated than when it is not, even when there are no other astrological influences that would induce this kind of experience.  Here is a graph that is updated regularly which provides data on the K-index.

Individuals with a strong Uranian element to their chart, such as planets in Aquarius or aspects from personal planets to Uranus, and especially those who have an opposition of Chiron to Uranus in their charts which suggests a sensitive nervous system, may find it interesting to track the K-index.  I haven’t found any metaphysical research involving this data so we’ll have to create our own!

Blogging in the time of Pluto in Capricorn

celebrity journalismWhen I started this blog in 2005, celebrity journalism was all the rage.  A good part of my posts were spent analyzing whether or not the latest celebrity relationships would last, or why the bimbo of the month had her latest meltdown.  Celebrity gossip as a media force has been around for a long time, but that force reached a point of hysteria when Pluto was in Sagittarius, which among other things rules entertainment and celebrity.

Pluto takes a long time to go through a sign, anywhere from twelve to twenty years, and while Pluto is going through a sign we tend to see the matters that are ruled by that sign become intensified and glorified, but we also see the dark underside of these areas of life emerge.  Sagittarius is the sign of expansion and optimism, and when Pluto moved through Sag between 1995 and 2008 we witnessed the darker side of perpetual optimism which led to unsustainable economic expansion and a relentless refusal to acknowledge the limits (Capricorn) of this kind of growth.  This of course is what led to the economic downturn in which we now find ourselves.

Under the glittering celebration of Pluto in Sagittarius, so many people, feeling the pressure of this expansiveness, longed to live like the celebrities whose every move was followed and studied.  This obsession with celebrity journalism was called a “virus” by the mainstream press who feared celebrity news would crowd out legitimate news.

Of course the destruction and transformation (Pluto) of journalism and news (Sagittarius) was something to be expected when Pluto went through Sagittarius, but now that Pluto is in Capricorn celebrities just don’t seem as interesting.  After all, how much can we really read about Lindsay […]

New Year/New Moon Capricorn eclipse, January 4 2011

Eclipse January 4 2011Happy new year everyone!

I apologize for being somewhat AWOL over the past few weeks.  I have been making a lot of changes in the physical space and the technology in my office, and combined with the activities of the holidays there has not been much time for writing.  Now that the new year has begun, and my projects are ALMOST complete, I hope to see you more often once again.

The second in a series of eclipses that began with the  occurred this morning at around 4 am Eastern time.   This eclipse, a solar eclipse at the New Moon in Capricorn on January 4th, features a lineup of four planets in Capricorn including not only the Sun and Moon, but also Pluto and Mars.  An eclipse occurs when one of the lunar nodes conjoins the Sun or Moon at the time of a lunation (a full or new Moon), and in the case of this eclipse Pluto is the bridge between the New Moon and the North Node.

Because the New Moon is the beginning of the lunar cycle, and because this New Moon contains the North Node which represents our future direction and Pluto creates endings that assist us in transformation, there is a sense here of propulsion into a new framework (Capricorn) that will help to support our lives and provide us with a stronger foundation than we have had before.  Any time Pluto is involved, there is a need to surrender and allow our higher selves and spirit teachers to create the necessary movement that will help to facilitate growth and evolution.  The Jupiter/Uranus urge to break apart these structures makes it absolutely imperative […]

Mercury turns direct! When is it over?

Mercury direct

Mercury will soon officially turned direct, meaning it will begin to move forward again through the zodiac.  As with many other astrological phenomena, astrologers disagree about how long the “shadow” period of the retrograde is, and when it is safe to emerge again from the shadows and begin making decisions and taking new steps.

In my view and experience, as long as Mercury is moving slowly as it does just before and just after the retrograde turn its effect on communication and frustrating events remains strong.  As Mercury begins to pick up speed there is more of an ease of motion that helps to lubricate both verbal communication and the transmission of energy in general.
The sign that Mercury is in and the aspects that it makes to other planets have a great deal to do with the effect of the retrograde period.  Mercury is in Sagittarius now where it tends to instill a broader vision that can be particularly frustrated by the retrograde, and the fact that Jupiter and Uranus are approaching their final conjunction in Pisces is creating surprising changes and turns of events.  This conjunction of Jupiter to Uranus breaks apart our preconceptions and requires that we release the past in order to move forward into a new breakthrough of awareness and experience.
Mercury will not begin to pick up speed until after the Capricorn New Moon on January 4th.  A New Moon in Capricorn, the sign of achievement, is a wonderful time to set intentions for success in business or other practical matters.   At that time Mercury will be in range of a challenging square to Jupiter and Uranus which may make it difficult to concentrate, but it could also encouraging the breaking […]

Mercury retrograde roundup

Mercury retrogradeMercury is still retrograde for another few days or so, and there are signs of it everywhere.  Mercury rules transportation as well as communication, and when retrograde there are often snafus and the need to repair our equipment and revise our plans

I’m sure my readers have stories of their own to tell: disappearing emails, dropped phone calls, malfunctioning equipment, miscommunications.  There are plenty of stories in the news as well that relate to the retrograde Mercury cycle (italicized words are Mercury keywords)

  • Passengers are stranded in airports all over the world from Boston to London to Moscow as winter storms bring air travel to a screeching halt.
  • Miscommunications between airline pilots and air traffic controllers resulted in passengers on Cathay Pacific and British Airways planes being without an available gate for many hours.
  • The Chinese government delivered a to Pope Benedict’s criticism of Chinese religious freedoms in his Christmas message.  It seems to me this is an area in which the Pope doesn’t have much room to criticize.
  • Time Warner Cable makes another grab for more programming money by rejecting a settlement offer with Sinclair Broadcasting which means Sinclair channels, including network and Fox affiliates, will go dark when the contract expires.
  • Consumer confidence in December, with consumers expecting that there will be fewer jobs in 2011.
  • A of a ski lift in Maine injured nine people.

What’s going on in your world?
