Astrological Musings

Sunday inspiration from Martin Luther King Jr.

The political chaos that we are now experiencing seems to follow every alignment between Uranus (radical change) and Pluto (destruction and transformation).  Today’s chaos is the result of the tumultuous change fostered by the challenging square between Uranus and Pluto between 2010 and 2017.  Martin Luther King Jr.’s voice emerged during the Uranus/Pluto conjunction of the mid-1960s when the civil rights movement came to a head.  There was a great debate at the time between Malcolm X, who called for disruption and violence where necessary, and Dr. King, who sought nonviolence and the peaceful way.  In the end both were assassinated and it’s difficult to say which of these great leaders in the end had the greatest effect on improving civil rights in this country.

In the US today and really around the world, the political situation grows uglier each day and the retrograde travel of Mars has only exacerbated the rage and anger that fills the airwaves.  Fighting this intensity with more of the same only fuels the fire and in the end there is no resolution.  I offer these quotes from Dr. King as a suggestion that while fueling violence with more violence is not the answer, taking a stand is an absolute imperative.

“Let no man pull you so low as to hate him.”

“We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.”

“We must build dikes of courage to hold back the flood of fear.”

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

“Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality.”

“He who […]

This Capricorn Full Moon helps to calm rattled nerves

Mars turned retrograde on June 26th, and even the Planetary K index which measures geomagnetic activity reacted with a level 5 storm, helping to intensity even more the aggression and heightened energy of the Mars station (catch up with Mars retrograde here).

The Moon is full in steady Capricorn now to help us find greater balance. Capricorn is the penultimate sign of practicality and worldly achievement – it helps us to focus our energy towards a goal and gain great rewards.  Capricorn is ruled by the Saturn – the old goat of time, the devil that we dislike but who is actually our greatest ally.  Saturn is like the very strict teacher who makes you practice your craft for hours at a time and tells you about all of your mistakes, but who you later thank for making you the skilled artist that you have become.  Saturn carries a dual role in this full moon – not only does it rule the Capricorn Moon, but it also conjoins the Moon giving this lunar event a double whammy of Saturnian structure.

Saturn, the Lord of Time, reminds us that “tempus fugit” – time is fleetinCapricorn full moong and we don’t know how long our life will be.  Saturn urges that we make the most out of what we have here in this moment. The Sun is in sensitive Cancer now, but under the influence of Capricorn we put our Cancerian emotions aside to do That Which Must Be Done.  Capricorn urges us to set goals and strategies for achievement, so this will help us to harness the intensity of Mars and put it to work.

Heads up! July’s lunar eclipse is the longest duration in a century

Blood moon eclipse July 2018

The July 2018 full moon [in Aquarius] presents the longest total lunar eclipse of the 21st century (2001 to 2100) on the night of July 27-28, 2018, lasting for a whopping 1 hour and 43 minutes. (In contrast, the previous total lunar eclipse on , lasted 1 hour and 16 minutes.) A partial eclipse precedes and follows the century’s longest total lunar eclipse, each time lasting 1 hour and 6 minutes. So, from start to finish, the moon takes nearly 4 hours (3 hours and 55 minutes) to cross the Earth’s . …

This lunar eclipse is primarily visible from the world’s  (Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand). South America, at least in part, can watch the final stages of the eclipse just after sunset July 27, whereas New Zealand will catch the beginning stages of the eclipse before sunrise July 28. North America, most of the Arctic and much of the Pacific Ocean will miss out entirely…

Some say that the effect of an eclipse is most powerful where it is viewable, but in my research of mundane events I have not seen this to be particularly true.  From an astrological perspective, the energetic intensity of an eclipse stems from the fact that the Sun and Moon are in a tight relationship to the lunar nodes. The nodes of the moon are known as the Dragon’s Head (North Node) and Tail (South Node), and in many ancient cultures it was said that during an eclipse a dragon did battle with the moon – a myth that has a basis in science because of the proximity of the […]

Planetary News this week: Retrogrades and a Capricorn Full Moon

astrological forecast(Note for newbies:  “retrograde” means that as we observe it from earth, a planet appears to be moving backwards in the sky.  Planets obviously don’t cycle backwards, but from our perspective they do appear to and we call that “retrograde.”  When a planet is retrograde its astrological influence is more personal, it often turns our attention inwards and encourages reflection and a going back over things in our lives that may not be working as well as they could.)

I’ve been writing a lot about Mars retrograde because that’s the “in your face” planetary cycle right now (catch up here), but after Mars turns retrograde June 26th four planets will be in retrograde motion including Neptune (catch up here) which just changed direction last week.  According to John McCormick’s  which is out of print but available at a high price, four planets are retrograde only 12.7% of the time so it is not that common (two or three retrograde planets at one time is quite normal).

Mars will be retrograde until August 27, 2018 and this is an excellent period to re-assess our desires and needs.  Conflicts that already exist will be difficult to avoid until then, especially since for most of this time Mars will be forming a stressful aspect to Uranus, planet of revolution and radical behavior.  This aspect will be strongest between July 14th and August 19th, and then again between September 10th and September 28th.  Mars is moving slower than usual now because of its apparent retrograde turn, so its influence is more intense than is typical of fast-moving Mars.

After Jupiter turns direct on July 10th there will be only three retrograde planets […]

Sunday inspiration: Poetry for Mars Retrograde

You have spent a lifetime
quietly mourning or ignoring
your losses and your lostness
with no funeral, no wake and no way
to nurture your joy.

Time for a burial.
No, for a burning!
For a great funeral pyre
that will light the night sky.
Then a festal meal of bread and wine.
And, from the ashes, perhaps some kind of rising.

 Unfurling

As Mars prepares to retrograde, as it does every two years or so, it’s a good time to look back at these losses and our sense of “lostness” and reclaim the space that is being held in our psyche by these old and long ignored hurts and wounds.  Perhaps we can begin to let go a bit of the stories that keep us trapped and unable to move forward.

Mars is a motivator – it fuels the fire of our drives and desires, and when thwarted it can morph into anger and rage.  Emotional wounds are another source of anger when our needs (Mars) aren’t met.

I love this poem which inspires us not to bury these old wounds but to immolate them with a fire of passion and wonder, followed by a celebration to make way for the new life.
