Planetary news this week: the Venus/Mars dance October 2017

Venus and Mars begin a new cycle in Virgo in October, symbolizing the eternal dance between feminine and masculine, receptive and assertive, light and dark, negative and positive, yin and yang.

These polarities are interdependent – neither can exist without the other – and they are equal in value.  At times various cultures may ascribe more value to one quality or another (for example, matriarchal cultures may value the peace-seeking qualities of Venus where warrior cultures will value the aggressive energy of Mars), but in their purest form they are equal and balanced.

Finding balance between two polarities is an important part of the astrological symbolism – the twelve zodiac signs consist of six pairs of opposites and each pair requires the other to balance and integrate.  The same is true of Venus and Mars.  Venus is receptive – it represents the force of magnetic attraction.  Under the influence of Venus we attract lovers, money, and other good things, and we learn how to increase that power of attraction by the way in which we interact with the people and things around us.  Mars, however, goes after what it wants.  Mars is the principle of action and motivation, and when the principle of action is thwarted frustration results so Mars also traffics in anger and rage.

In relationships, Venus makes sacrifices for the sake of peace and harmony where Mars seeks personal gratification and the meeting of one’s own needs.  Both are equally important although we sometimes tend to value one over the other.

The conjunction, the meeting of the two planets, is the beginning of a new Venus/Mars cycle.  Like a New Moon, new planetary cycles offer a fresh beginning.  This is an opportunity to find new balance […]

Jupiter in Scorpio: Expansion of Truth and Mystery

Jupiter – the King of the Gods, the largest planet in our solar system.  Everything about it is bigger than life.  In our natal astrological charts, Jupiter shows where we find meaning in life, the kind of belief systems we formulate, and the pathways that will give us the abundance and opportunities to keep expanding. Known traditionally as the “greater benefic,” Jupiter’s influence is generally favorable and offers us confidence and optimism and a desire for growth and expansion.

(Astrology geeks: details of planetary movements can be found at the bottom of the page)  Jupiter also represents the search for truth – our own personal truth.  The truth that makes sense to us, our theology, and when we find others that share that truth, our religion.  Our philosophy of life.  In the process of finding this truth we seek to expand the limits of our knowledge through higher education, discovery of other cultures and foreign countries, and the higher knowledge that expands our inner consciousness.

The astrological sign of Scorpio represents Truth with a capital “T” – the Truth that is gritty and real and supersedes our own ideas of what is true.  Jupiter stays in a sign for about a year and has been in the sign of Libra since the fall of 2016 where it expanded cultural ideas of beauty and relationships.  Jupiter will enter the deep water sign of Scorpio on October 10th 2017 and will remain there through November 8th 2018.

Scorpio is also associated with sexuality, emotional intensity, passions of all kinds, as well as the energetic undercurrents that reveal the secrets behind the areas of our lives that we usually keep hidden.  Brutal honesty and direct confrontation are […]

Planetary news this week!

Dear friends, I am hoping to get back on a more or less regular writing schedule and as always appreciate your patience.  I’m also going to try something new, which is to keep the planetary information simple but include the astrological details at the bottom of the post.  I hope that this will help those of you new to astrology, which is most of my readership, while still giving the experts the information they need.

On to today’s news!   First of all, Pluto is shining a laser beam right now that will continue throughout the months of September and October.  Pluto is the Lord of the Underworld of the Psyche, and when its influence is powerful as it is right now there is a tendency for the dark underbelly of the collective psyche to be revealed.

If like me Pluto is activating your personal chart, you are likely to experience a higher level of intensity and confrontation than usual as Pluto works to strip away our false selves to reveal the Truth that lies beneath over the next few months.

The other big piece of astrological news is the deconstruction and pressure for radical change that is the dance between Jupiter and Uranus.  Both of these planets seek change and liberation, but in this cycle they are in a challenging aspect to each other which can be somewhat destabilizing as part of us yearns for change, yet change is occurring in a manner that is unexpected and perhaps undesired.

Under this influence change can be uncomfortable for many of us.  It’s not unusual to be unhappy with an aspect of our lives yet be unwilling or afraid to create […]

A very wicked Mercury Retrograde! And “Mercury Max”

Am I the only one who has had a miserable time over the past three weeks?  I’m usually pretty good at navigating through Mercury retrograde periods, but this one really did wreak havoc in many areas of my life.  I can’t count the number of appointments that I either didn’t enter into the calendar or put in the wrong place.  Confusion in communication was rampant, including changing my mind and redoing certain things over and over.

All of this was made worse by the fact that Mercury (communication) aligned with Mars (passion and anger) at the eclipse degree, at the end of August.  Any issues that came up at the time of eclipse continued to erupt at that time.

Richard Nolle is a brilliant astrologer who first coined the term “Supermoon” for a lunation (Full or New Moon) that is closest to the earth.  Another one of his ideas is that of “Mercury Max” – the period of greatest elongation between Mercury and the Sun.  According to Richard, the Mercury Max period ”

begins when evening star Mercury reaches its maximum elongation (greatest distance) east of the Sun; extends through the Mercury  and the inferior , and ends when the little planet as morning star reaches its maximum elongation west of the Sun.

If like me this technical language is difficult to comprehend, the important thing to note is that these cycles occur four times a year in concert with the Mercury retrograde cycles.  The current Mercury Max cycle according to Richard began on July 30th and continued all the way through August, ending around September […]

Musings on the Great American Eclipse

for an article about the astrology of the eclipse, follow this link.

This week like so many others Rich and I took a trip (with our NASA authorized glasses) to a location in South Carolina where the path of the eclipse would exhibit maximum totality.  The most incredible part of the eclipse experience was witnessing the explosion of light after the shadow of the Moon covered the Sun.  As an astrologer I tend to focus more on the inner landscape of planetary events and less on the astronomical, but it was still a miracle to witness such an amazing display of nature’s majesty.

One thing I don’t like about my job is that other’s people fears create business opportunities.  The hype around the effect of this eclipse was so immense that I had clients calling me afraid to travel during the eclipse.  One was afraid to start a new job.  One thought her marriage would end.  One thought she would probably die because the eclipse was on her ascendant, but our reading actually occurred when the lunar eclipse was on her Pluto!  And of course she was just fine.

To be fair, most of the doomsayers were religious fanatics rather than astrologers, and in the midst of my first total eclipse I understood why ancient humans were so afraid of eclipses.  The world suddenly goes dark as the Moon eats the Sun, birds and insects go quiet, and the light fades in a particularly eerie fashion as darkness drains the color from the world and replaces it with blackness.

Eclipses are important astrologically because they occur when the lunar nodes are conjunct (aligned with) the Sun and Moon.  Because the lunar […]
