Sunday inspiration: The dance of Uranus and pluto

The dance of Uranus and Pluto is one of the most powerful planetary cycles in terms of creating cataclysmic and transformative change.  The brilliant astrological historian  about the Uranus/Pluto cycle:

Uranus and Pluto do not automatically signify forward change. They bend the bars and blow holes in the walls, leaving us to respond to the acute options presented. … [W]e humans tend to avoid exploiting many of our big opportunities when they’re offered. We drag our feet and resist change until our arms are twisted behind our backs and the pain excludes other alternatives. We’re very accustomed to this behaviour. The outcome is that change-potential accumulates until the dam bursts … Blessings and cruelties unite in their hammer action….

Because as humans we do tend to resist change, the powerful changes that result from this dance of Uranus (revolution) and Pluto (death and regeneration) often take years to make themselves known.  We are seeing this play out on the global stage and sometimes it can be difficult to maintain our equilibrium which I wrote about here.

But as I always tell my clients – the planets are always doing something! It’s rather futile to moan about and wait for planetary cycles to be over – that will never happen.  The only constant in life is change, as they say, and we must learn to see that hidden in every disaster is a nugget of possibility and magic!

It’s also important to remember that weaving through every challenging planetary cycle are harmonious […]

Jupiter square Pluto, Phase II: the Death of Truth

War on Truth Jupiter square PlutoJupiter and Pluto are locked in a battle of wills in the sky right now – the second phase of the challenging square (90 degree) aspect that began last November.

Jupiter and Pluto both have something to do with the idea of truth.  Jupiter, a personal planet,  represents our own individual truth – the philosophies and ideas about truth (theology) that we formulate for ourselves and then share with others in religions or through publishing these ideas.  Pluto, a transformational planet,  is concerned more with Ultimate Truth – a Truth that is beyond any of our individual ideas of what is true, but the real Truth of life and death.

Under this Jupiter/Pluto alignment we have seen an increase in “fake news” – both real and imagined – and an ever decreasing burring of the line between truth and fiction.  Truth  is seen to be a lie, and lies are seen as the truth to the point where Time Magazine’s new issue asks ““?

Under the square between Jupiter and Pluto the President of the United States has declared a war (Pluto) on media (Jupiter) and declares most news (Jupiter) as being lies (Pluto) unless it’s complimentary of him.

A recent “fake news” story about a Hillary Clinton’s involvement in an alleged child sexual abuse ring operating out of a pizza parlor dubbed Pizzagate circulated widely before it was who perpetrated the story.  However, to protest the fact that the so-called scandal was ignored by the media and refused to believe that the story wasn’t true.

Evidence of a War on Truth is everywhere and from viewpoints all […]

Sunday Inspiration: The Kingdom of Memory

The Moon aligns with Neptune in Pisces today – a double dose of mystical energy to open the portals of consciousness and allow us to peer beyond the veil.  A conjunction of Mercury (the mind) to Uranus (awakening) assists us on the mental level so expand our awareness into multidimensional thinking.

These influences allow us to venture into the Kingdom of Memory – the place in our present where our past resides as beautifully stated by John O’Donohoe, the brilliant Irish mystic:

As we journey onwards in life, more and more spaces within us fill with absence. We begin to have more and more friends among the dead. Every person suffers the absence of their past.

It is utterly astonishing how the force and fiber of each day unravel into the vacant air of yesterday. You look behind you and you see nothing of your days here. Our vanished days increase our experience of absence. Yet our past does not deconstruct as if it never was.

Memory is the place where our vanished days secretly gather. Memory rescues experience from total disappearance. The kingdom of memory is full of the ruins of presence. It is astonishing how faithful experience actually is; how it never vanishes completely. Experience leaves deep traces in us. It is surprising that years after something has happened to you the needle of thought can hit some groove in the mind and the music of a long vanished event can rise in your soul as fresh and vital as the evening it happened.

Except from Eternal Echoes.

Pluto returns in the Roman Empire: A history lesson

roman empire astrologyPlanetary returns are typically very significant times in a person’s life.  The first return of Mars to its place in the birthchart just after the age of two marks the “terrible twos” – the returns of Saturn at age 28-30 and 56-60 mark major shifts of focus from youth to achievement (first return), and then from achievement to retreat (second return).

Nations also have astrological charts, and therefore also have planetary returns but there is none so significant as the Pluto return.  Pluto takes 244 years to traverse its path around the Sun, and so the Pluto return occurs every 244 years or so.  I always find it interesting to examine historical data in order to attempt predictions about what could occur during the the US Pluto return which will take place around 2020, but I was unable to find one country whose current government was in existence 244 years ago.

Because Pluto’s domain has to do with power, corruption, destruction and regeneration, we would expect that governments which do not have a strong foundation would experience some kind of collapse or major transformation during these times.

There are a few empires whose influence have lasted through at least one Pluto return, but I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the Roman empire.  The Roman empire was established in 27 bce and lasted until the abdication of the last emperor in 476 ce after the second Pluto return.  (It’s interesting to note that a major crisis does not always occur at the time of a major planetary cycle – often the planetary cycle sets the wheels in motion for the crisis to occur in the years following the planetary event.)

The first Pluto return occurred around 216-222 ce. […]

Finding a spiritual connection in politically turbulent times

In a controversy the instant we feel anger we have already ceased striving for the truth, and have begun striving for ourselves. —Gautama Buddha

Like many of you I am finding myself struggling to find balance between engagement in the world and the current political situation and the need of the soul to seek peace and equanimity in a rapidly changing world.  No matter what your political persuasion, it’s clear that the anger and rage in the world is rising to a feverish pitch, and the journey of Mars through Aries last month triggered an already burning flame into a raging fire.

Political involvement keeps me wound up and upset, angry and frustrated.  My inner being seeks the peace and comfort of stillness and solitude (my Jupiter is in the twelfth house of transcendence and I find the greatest meaning (Jupiter) in experiences of merging into Spirit consciousness).  And yet throughout history, great sages have remained rooted in the world, seeking positive change for humanity.

When I lived in an ashram back in the 1970s, we were encouraged to withdraw from “The World.”  The mundane business of politics and finance and business is a big distraction from spiritual focus.  But it occurs to me now, with the vantage point of age, that this kind of focus on our own spiritual growth and experience is, really, selfish in nature.  Surely the wisdom and clarity that we gain from progressing on the spiritual path can be used in aiding others and helping to create a more harmonious and peaceful world?

Somehow though we must accomplish this without becoming lost in a morass of rage and despair.  The only way that I can imagine this to occur is when we trust […]
