Retrograde Mercury demands attention

Mercury retrograde

I have known for a long time that the Mercury retrograde phenomenon occurs when Mercury is closest to Earth, but the obvious implications of this escaped me until I read this :

The retrograde period occurs when we are the closest in our orbit to a planet, when we are speeding past them (or for Mercury and Venus, they are speeding past us) so fast that they look like they’re going backwards (and from their point of view, we look the same way). So, if anything, it’s a period of more active engagement, gravitationally and by sheer proximity. A retrograde planet is literally in our face, as much as it can get, with all that implies. It demands our attention, and it only becomes a problem if we ignore it or avoid it (which has been our first inclination, traditionally).

Mercury is the planet of communication and short travel, and when Mercury is retrograde our attention to detail is somewhat inhibited so we tend to miss the larger cues which creates the famous snafus and glitches of these periods.  I have found that this is especially true in the week before Mercury turns retrograde.  At that time its motion slows to a virtual standstill and demands our attention.  The initial phases of a planetary cycle are usually the most intense, as we must integrate a new dynamic of consciousness that has previously not been present.

From John Townley:

[W]hat you should be doing during a retro – paying close attention to needed fixes and readjustments and not just taking time off until it’s over. Those who spend the time with their eyes and minds open profit from the effort, those who don’t miss […]

Reader question: How can we adapt in an unjust world?

Serenity Charm by James Avery

Gina asks,

As a person born in Aug 1966, I have (it seems to this amateur) that there is such an emphasis in my natal chart of Saturn and Chiron. I also have Uranus and Pluto in my 12th so I feel like I can get weighed down with the concerns of the collective and have experienced some eerie coincidences when I have experienced depression before a large event. So I can’t help but notice injustice (and there are so many). Then I can become cynical and embittered and distrustful.

Obviously this isn’t helpful to me or anyone.

I also was born with an Aries moon so my ire has really been stirred the last few years. So in my long winded way (sorry) in your blog entry when you suggest we ‘adapt,’ what do you mean. How do you see the balance between addressing injustices and adapting to new changes? What if the new changes seem unjust and unacceptable? Is it then time to break out the crying towel and have a misery party? I really would rather not.

This is a powerful question Gina, and not that easy to answer. First of all, the conjunction of Saturn (the Celestial Teacher) to Chiron the Soul Healer) in the mid 1960s is a difficult one that is often accompanied by deep soul wounds that create a great deal of emotional sensitivity.

When Saturn tightly aspects Chiron in the natal chart there is a requirement that we work diligently (Saturn) to heal our inner wounds which likely feel more intense than we imagine others to be.  You have fairly accurately described the tendencies of the other factors in your chart, and […]

The Eris-Uranus conjunction of 2015-2017

( from “All Hail Discordia” by Divine Right.) If the global situation seems crazy and insane (and it does!) we can blame it on the conjunction between Eris and Uranus in the warrior sign of Aries, a conjunction that began in 2015.

Eris is a small planet that was discovered in 2003.  Her Roman name was Discordia – she is the goddess who, when not invited to a wedding, began the Trojan War by throwing a golden apple marked “for the fairest” into a circle of goddesses, beginning a dispute that threw Greece into turmoil for ten years.  (Read more about the mythology of Eris here.)  Eris moves very slowly – its orbital cycle is 560 years – and it is still not clear what astrological impact it brings.

Uranus is the planet of radical change and revolutionary behavior.  It has been in the sign of war (Aries) since 2010, fomenting conflicts around the world.  When the planet of discord (Eris) aligns with the planet of disruption (Uranus), it’s easy to see where established paradigms and principles would be turned upside down.

The last Eris/Uranus conjunction took place between 1927 and 1929 in the first degrees of Aries.  This was a period of tremendous scientific and technological (Uranian) breakthroughs as well as political turmoil.  The discovery of quantum physics, the first transatlantic flight by Charles Lindbergh followed by the first woman-led transatlantic flight (Amelia Earhart),  an 8.6 magnitude earthquake in China, rebellions and revolutions encircled the globe including China, Austria, Portugal, Mexico, Japan, Afghanistan.  This of course was the peak of the “Roaring Twenties,” a period of cultural revolution and excesses of all kinds that ended in the stock market crash of 1929 – an event that certainly […]

September 1 2016 solar eclipse: A Fiesta of Virgo

The Virgo New Moon on September 1st is part of a stellium of four planets plus the North Node in Virgo.  A lunar event is said to be an eclipse when it occurs close to the lunar nodes, the points at which the Moon crosses the path of the Sun, and this is astrologically significant because the nodes represent the evolutionary movement of the soul from the past (South Node) to the future (North Node).  This is why eclipses are often linked to significant events – there is a sense of fate with the nodes that comes through in an eclipse.

Today’s eclipse is an eclipse of the Sun at the New Moon – the solar conscious principle is eclipsed by the lunar instincts.  It’s a total eclipse and very significant astrologically since the North Node is just three degrees from the Sun and Moon.  However, because the Moon is farther away from the Earth than at other times, this is called an “annular” eclipse rather than a “total” eclipse.

The energy of this eclipse is powerful.  First of all, the intense concentration of Virgo precision impels us to seek improvement in all areas of our lives.  The details of our human existence are paramount right now and for the next week or so as the eclipse peaks and winds down.  Mercury (the mind) has just turned retrograde and is aligned with Jupiter (confidence and optimism) to expand our sense of what is possible.

The lunation (Sun/Moon/Node) is opposite Neptune (spiritual yearning) which aligns with the South Node to add a nostalgic touch and force us to address karmic patterns from the past that are holding us back. […]

Mercury retrograde alert! August 30-September 22, 2016

Planets don’t really move backward, but astrology observes the movement of the planets from our perspective on earth so we sometimes see their apparent motion reversing.  We call this “retrograde,” and every planet in the astrological pantheon will reverse its direction now and then. When a planet is retrograde, its influence can become stronger and more pronounced as it retraces its steps over our psyche to better make its point known.

Mercury is the ruler of communication and the mind, and its realm also include communication technology as well as short distance travel.  When Mercury is retrograde all of these things become more difficult and don’t always work the way we would like them to.  There is a greater tendency to experience communication snafus, equipment breakdowns, travel problems.  These periods are typically not ideal for beginning something new because our attention is turned away and we may not be as attentive to details as some ventures require.

Mercury retrogrades on the 29th degree of its own sign of Virgo, just before the Virgo New Moon on September 1st (Eastern time zone).  This is a triple whammy of Mercury/Virgo focus on the details of life, which makes it critical right now to be as attentive as possible.  Slow down the speed of your life, use your powers of observation to be sure all ducks are lined up precisely in a row before taking action.

Mercury is retrograde for three weeks four times every year and we can’t put our lives on hold while we wait for Mercury to reverse its course and head direct again.  Signing contracts, accepting new jobs, scheduling surgeries – these things must often happen during Mercury retrograde periods.  If you must begin or plan […]
