About Retrogrades

RxI’m in the process of migrating old articles to the blog platform, here’s a chance to catch up on some oldies but goodies.

The study of astrology looks at the motion of the planets in the solar system from our perspective here on earth, and because of anomalies in the orbits of the planets, occasionally during their travels around the sun they appear to move backwards. As a planet turns retrograde, it appears to slow down gradually until it appears to be almost standing still. This is called “making a station.” When planets are in retrograde motion, their effect on us tends to be rather more insistent, like a teacher who keeps us after school to be sure we have learned the lesson that day.

Transits and retrogrades:

Transiting planets make angles to the planets in our own birthcharts, creating environmental patterns of energy that affect us in our day-to-day life. Because of this retrograde motion, a transiting planet often will “hit” our birth planet, move past it, then turn retrograde and hit it a second time, turn direct again and hit a third time. Occasionally Pluto will hit a birth planet four or five times in a truly life-changing transition.

I like to compare this kind of transitory effect to cars driving through your neighborhood with loud boomboxes. When the transiting planet first begins to approach your birth planet, it’s like the car with the loud boombox is at the end of your street and about to turn the corner. It is entering your conscious awareness, but you can still tune it out. As it gets closer to your house, it gets louder and more difficult to ignore. Finally the car is in front of your house (as […]

The Sun’s magnetic field is about to flip

Screen Shot 2013-08-06 at 8.39.15 AMBefore you panic, this is an occurrence that happens approximately every eleven years at the midpoint of the solar cycle.  We are currently in a “Solar Max” period, even though this has been a mild one.

As humans we depend on the light of the Sun.  The astrological Sun feeds our vitality and quality of being, and when there is a solar storm or a coronal mass ejection we are affected here on earth.  Cosmic rays disrupt the electrical systems on earth, and as humans we are surrounded by an elecromagnetic grid that can be affected by solar changes.

NASA has kindly made a wonderful video that even I could understand, enjoy!

Lynn’s Skywatch: Planetary Illuminations for August 2013

astrospiralThe August Planetary Illuminations are posted now and you can read them in their entirety here.  If you are on my mailing list (and if you’re not, scroll down on the sidebar and sign up!) you will receive your report translated into English in your email box.

Meanwhile, here is the introduction to get you started:

The month of August begins with the Star of David and Grand Sextile still in effect, though it is waning. You can read more about that configuration here, but it contained an alignment of eight planets including Chiron with a variety of powerful inter aspects. Its effect has been to expand and open up the powerful energies of the bigger and more dynamic alignment (square) between Uranus (radical change) and Pluto (depth and transformation).

We still have a preponderance of the water element which gives us greater access to feelings and our inner worlds, but the air element is lacking. Air gives us perspective and helps us to communicate and process our experiences mentally, so it may be more difficult for us to reason now than at other times.

Jupiter (expansion and belief) is in opposition (180 degree) aspect to Pluto (power and destruction) and preparing to square (90 degrees) Uranus over the next few weeks. The square between Uranus and Pluto is a major cycle that will continue into 2015, and the addition of Jupiter into this planetary conflict will heighten and intensify the pressure for change and release. Its effect will vary depending on how our individual charts are affected, but for the world at large there are likely to be increased conflicts over religion and ideology with Jupiter involved.

Musings on Uranus as he retrogrades today

.  As one of the outer planets, what I like to call the “transformational” planets, Uranus turns retrograde for about half the year, every years.  This ebb and flow of planets moving forward and then retreating before moving on again is a natural part of life and if we are able to slow down the rush of our thoughts we can find ourselves rocking to the rhythm of this eternal planetary wisdom.  This is very much like the seashore, where the waves flow in and recede again, in an everlasting flow.

Uranus is named after the Sky God Ouranos who actually held up the arc of the sky.  In some accounts he is the father of Hermes/Mercury, and astrologers (me, anyway) often speak of Uranus as being a “higher octave” of Mercury meaning the mental function of Mercury is elevated to a higher plane of consciousness and awareness.  Where Mercury rules the mind and everyday communication, Uranus teaches us to break through the boundaries of ordinary awareness and think differently.  Under the auspices of Uranus we learn to listen to other dimensions of reality (which we call insight – those “Eureka” moments).  We resist being pigeonholed and create new ways of living together in the world.  We rebel against restriction and demand the autonomy to be our own uniquely creative and original Self.

It’s the role of Uranus to wake us up from the stupor of our day to day unconsciousness.  In order to do that he sometimes brings about a shocking or surprising event that startles us awake and forces us to look at uncomfortable truths in our lives.

Some of us find it easier to express our inner radical than others.  If Uranus is […]

Mars enters Cancer and the summer heats up

mars in cancer 2013Mars in Cancer, July 13 – August 27, 2013 Tomorrow I will post on the Zimmerman verdict and what it means in the current planetary climate, but on Sundays I try to keep an inspirational focus rather than delve into politics and ugliness. Mars entered Cancer July 13, 2013 and tempers are likely to flare over the next few weeks.  Mars is in Cancer every two years or s0, and because Mars is the planet of aggression and drive it is not very comfortable in the emotional sign of Cancer.  When anger and emotional sensitivity combine there can be one of two results:  at its best, we are more sensitive and nurturing of others (Cancer) in taking our own needs into consideration (Mars).  But Mars is by its very nature a self-centered planet and this rarely occurs, so more often we become angry (Mars) at the need to watch out for the feelings of others (Cancer).  Our emotions (Cancer) may become tinged with anger and frustration (Mars) if frustration is permitted to build up. While Mars is in Cancer, especially over the next two weeks (through the first week in August), it will be setting off the Uranus/Pluto square (see the sidebar for more information if this is new to you, or for a refresher).  But first Mars aligns with Jupiter, expanding (Jupiter) the aggressive force (Mars) and adding confidence and self-righteousness (Jupiter) to our already touchy expression of needs and anger (Mars).   This dynamic will peak on the 21st (and the Moon will be involved on that day too), so over the next week it will be important to get enough physical activity so that the energy of Mars, which is expanded […]
