The August report on planetary excitement is now posted in full on my website here. If you’re on my mailing list you will soon receive your own copy along with a translation into English which is easier to understand. If you’re NOT on my mailing list, please sign up on my website or in the sidebar of this blog. Here is the overview of major astrological events for the month: August begins with a powerful Full Moon in Aquarius. For more details about the Full Moon please see this article. The emphasis of this Full Moon in fire and air sets the tone for the month as there is very little water to cool us down or earth to ground us. Mercury is retrograde in Leo until August 8th and Uranus has just turned retrograde in Aries and is still moving extremely slowly which intensifies its influence. You can read more about this combination in this blog article, but the combination of Mercury and Uranus retrograde in fire signs suggests a powerful emphasis on mental activity and potential chaos of the mind. The lack of water and earth exacerbates this and means we need to take greater care than usual to ensure that we find internal stabilization and nurturing that are missing with a shortage of water and earth in the planetary alignments. Mercury retrograde periods are always good for things like renewing commitments, retracing our steps, renovating our house or redoing our websites. With the addition of a strong Uranian influence, the revisions and remodeling need to take on an innovative quality so that the change brings in an element that is completely different from our previous experience. It’s helpful to avoid making commitments or signing contracts during retrograde Mercury periods but it’s […]
Someone posted on our astroblogger Facebook group:
Until recently, I had a dirty little secret. I write horoscopes. Or at least, I used to. Now it’s not such a dirty little secret because a) I’ve just told you and b) there aren’t that many horoscope clients left in my portfolio any more, anyway. But back in the day – oh yes. I was the BBC Slink teen astrologer for 13 years until the site closed last year and provided daily teen horoscopes throughout that time. … ; You might think that this was a track record to be proud of. My husband, bless him, certainly thought so and would waste no time in telling people proudly about my various clients while I smiled through gritted teeth and quickly changed the subject. I wasn’t particularly proud; not ashamed either, exactly, but, well, embarrassed. You see, as a professional astrologer. I know better than anyone that sun sign horoscopes are by their very nature generalisations at best and at worst a load of tosh. Telling someone that I was writing them made it sound as though I – and worse, every other member of my profession – truly believed that all Scorpios were going to win the lottery on Thursday, but not before their Leo partners had ditched them for the next door neighbour and run off to start a new life on the Costa del Sol. Bracing myself for the “but you don’t actually believe all that stuff, do you?” question, it was easier to just move off the subject than try to defend *real* astrology and point out that I was just writing horoscopes because it paid well.
The word “horoscope” has come to mean […]
You might want to read about the concept of “higher octave planets” if you missed that post before reading this one. Uranus will turn retrograde early in the morning on the 14th EDT (late morning GMT) and Mercury will turn retrograde late in the evening EDT on the 15th (early morning on the 16th GMT). Planets of course don’t really change direction, but astrology is person-centered. We are the center of our own universe, and that is how we observe the planets astrologically. Sometimes the movement of the planets appears to retrograde from our perspective on earth, and during those times the operation of those planets functions differently, and usually in a more inward than outward fashion. The outer planets are retrograde for about six months out of every year, and Mercury is retrograde for three weeks four times a year, so these events are not uncommon. Still, they tend to arrive with a lot of weeping and moaning from the astrocommunity. While it’s true that Mercury retrograde periods can be challenging for planning a trip, coordinating meetings, all kinds of communication equipment including email and voicemail, they are also valuable times to rethink any areas of life where additional processing is required. Mercury rules the mind and the mental functioning as well as the transmission of information. Mercury is involved in the learning process, as well as the method through which we communicate our understanding and in retrograde motion our knowledge and awareness of the interconnections in our universe can deepen past the superficial. As the higher octave of Mercury, Uranus elevate the workings of the mind to a superconscious state. The flashes of insight that come from scientific discovery or personal intuition – […]
Mercury and Uranus both turn retrograde next week so I thought it might be a good idea to begin with a discussion of the concept of “higher octave” planets since Uranus is known as the higher octave of Mercury, and that is important to understand when looking at their tandem retrogradation this month.
The personal planets, representing aspects of personality, are the planets that are visible in the sky. Saturn forms a natural boundary to the personal planets, which is in itself an interesting symbology since Saturn rules boundaries and limits, as well as the practical material world. The outer planets (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto) represent transformational forces – they transpersonalize our experiences and bring us into a greater connection with the Universal laws of spirit and metaphysics.
The outer planets most commonly thought of as “higher octave” planets are Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. These transformational planets are associated with the three planets closest to the Sun: Mercury (associated with Uranus), Venus (associated with Neptune) and Pluto (associated with Mars). Where Mercury represents the mind and personal awareness, Uranus expands that awareness to a broader consciousness of Universal Mind. Where Venus represents love and personal relationships, Neptune inspires us to open our hearts to Divine Love and a relationship with the Universe itself. Where Mars represents our personal will and desires, Pluto represents the will of the higher self – urging us to drop any pretense of limitation and evolve into our most empowered Self.
In this model, the principle of Saturn stands at the guardian of the gates and in order to elevate from the lower octave to the higher, the boundaries of the material world (Saturn) must be transcended.
In my view […]

Meanwhile, here is the introduction to get you started:
As July begins, Venus has just turned direct and is moving forward again after her short retrograde period. The Transit of Venus is behind us, as is the first exact formation of the Uranus/Pluto square which actually began last year and will continue through 2014.
You can read more about the square formation between Uranus and Pluto here if this is new to you. The two planets are still only 17 minutes of arc from the exact alignment, and it will be the middle of July before they really begin to separate. So throughout the first few weeks of July expect for this conflict between the structures of the past (Pluto in Capricorn) and the new ideas and patterns of individual self-expression (Uranus in Aries) to continue, especially between the 11th and 22nd or so when Mars enters the picture and acts as a trigger for the unexpected to occur. More on that in the planetary details below.
The Uranus/Pluto dynamic is intensified by the fact that Uranus will turn retrograde mid-month so its motion has slowed to a standstill in preparation for the change of direction. When a planet changes direction its influence becomes more insistent, and with Uranus we are dealing with energies of surprise, radical changes and a journey into the unknown. Pluto is also retrograde now so both of these behemoths are urging us to look back over our lives to see where we have stalled the progress of our own evolution – where do we need to […]
