The astrology of SOPA

SOPA astrologySOPA is the Stop Online Piracy Act currently under discussion in the US House of Representatives.  At first glance, stopping online piracy sounds like a good idea.  I know that I myself have found plenty of my articles circulating on the Net under someone else’s byline.  But when you dig a little deeper into the language of the 75 page bill you find requirements that internet provides monitor the usage of its customers to ensure that rogue sites are not visited, and gives the Justice Department the authority to shut down websites that do not comply.

From an astrological perspective, the Internet is ruled by the planet Uranus, the giver of technology and innovation.  Uranus entered the sign of Aries last year, bringing the energy of aggressive force and self-orientation (Aries) into Uranian realms and intensifying the natural rebellious tendencies of Uranus.

Pluto is the planet of death, power and transformation, and it governs experiences that take us to the limit of endurance and then push us a little further.  In 2008 Pluto entered Capricorn,  the sign of social and economic structures.  Pluto seeks to consolidate power, while at the same time breaking down existing structures that are weak or corrupt so that they can be rebuilt, and the mission Pluto in Capricorn is clear: force the rebuilding of the very fabric of society.

Over the next few years  the revolutionary fervor that we have seen over the past year with Uranus in Aries will continue as Uranus and Pluto face off in a challenging square (90 degree) aspect.  As the power structure (Pluto) finds it more difficult to control the freedom (Uranus) of the masses it will seek more egregious measures to do so (Pluto) , which […]

Astrology software for the Iphone

As a professional astrologer I’m always asked  for recommendations of astrology software programs. Until now there has been a huge gap between the so-called “horoscope” apps that provide fun but useless “horoscopes” based on sun sign only, especially for the Iphone. (I use the word “horoscope” in quotes here because a horoscope is actually the actual natal chart rather than the predictions it has come to signify.)

I use the Solar Fire professional software program in my day-to-day astrology practice, so when their Iphone version came out I purchased it right away.  At $29.99 the app is not cheap, but it is certainly handy to be able to whip out the phone and immediately calculate the position of your progressed Moon.

The folks at Astrograph sent me an offer to review their Iphone app so of course I took them up on it.  They also have a free app which I highly recommend.

provides everything you need to cast your own birthchart, and even gives you a real “horoscope” showing the effect of the current planetary positions on your own birthchart. This is a great way to learn about astrology and the effect of the planets on our personal lives. If you want the option to show a transit wheel or progressed chart, you can purchase this and other options for a very modest fee ($.99).

The paid naturally has more features.  You can view biwheels with the natal and progressed charts, or natal and transit charts.  (I suppose it would be difficult to view a triwheel on an Iphone, but that would be a great feature at some point in the future.)  The app does include a “compatibility meter” which I am not […]

A look back at the Astrology of 2011

Sankofa birdI like the principle of the , which says that in order to understand the future we must understand the past.  When I see a new client I always go back over the past five years or so to see where they’ve been before I can help them to see what the future might hold, and the same holds true for global predictions.  , who looks both forwards and backwards and rules the month of January – the first month of the year.

To understand what happened in 2011 we have to go back to early 2008 when Pluto entered Capricorn and began the contraction that is now spreading around the world and creating one economic crisis after another as country after country implements austerity (Capricorn) measures that continue the contraction rather than counteract it.  In 2009 and 2010 Chiron and Neptune aligned to force us to look beyond the material world (Neptune) and heal the wounds of the past (Chiron).  These years also marked the peak of the Cardinal Drama as I called it (also known as the Cardinal Crisis in many astrological circles) during which up to seven planets and luminaries combined in a variety of challenging positions to execute intense change in our personal lives and in the world at large.

I didn’t write an article last year on the Astrology of 2011, but if you want to go back you can listen to the.  This was a year markedly less impacted by major planetary cycles other than the square between Uranus (radical change and revolution) to Pluto (destruction and […]

December Skywatch is posted!

You can find it on my website here, or sign up for your own subscription with a translation into English.

Meanwhile here’s what you need to know about the first week in December, along with a synopsis of December’s major events.

In December 2011 and January 2012 we will continue to see a relatively quiet planetary weather pattern. Jupiter and Uranus are highlighted now since they both change direction in December and they have both slowed down to a crawl in preparation of their direct turn. For most of December Uranus is at 0 degrees Aries and Jupiter at 0 degrees Taurus which puts them in an inconjunct aspect – a challenging aspect that creates friction without providing a release. In some ways this can be more difficult than a square aspect in which there is a resulting outer conflict that comes to a resolution, but it tends to be more of an irritation than a conflagration. Jupiter and Uranus both want change and neither tend to be satisfied with the status quo, so there is a great deal of pressure to shift now out of patterns that have become calcified and no longer fit.

During the first week of December Jupiter is approaching a harmonious sextile to Chiron which opens the door to healing and understanding that will help us to navigate through the challenges presented to us by the minor planets in early December. This is the second phase of a cycle that began in July, and because Jupiter is stationary right now and Chiron is also moving slowly having just changed direction in November, the two will be in a sextile formation until this cycle ends in February. Jupiter helps to facilitate the healing of wounds that […]

When does the Mayan calendar really end?

The Mayan calendar is usually said to end on December 21, 2012, but that date seems to have little relevance to the actual Mayan calendar, although it has come to bear great mythological significance for the current age.  According to that great source of modern wisdom :

In 1975, the ending of b’ak’tun 13 became the subject of speculation by several  authors, who asserted it would correspond with a global “transformation of consciousness”. In Mexico Mystique: The Coming Sixth Age of Consciousness,  tied Coe’s original date of December 24, 2011, to astrology and the prophecies of the , while both  (in The Transformative Vision) and  (in The Invisible Landscape) discussed the significance of the year 2012, but not a specific day. It was only in 1983, with the publication of ‘s revised table of date correlations in the 4th edition of Morley’s The Ancient Maya, that each became convinced that December 21, 2012, had significant meaning. By 1987, the year in which he organized the  event, Arguelles was using the date December 21, 2012 in The Mayan Factor: Path Beyond Technology. He claimed that on August 13, 3113 BC the Earth began a passage through a “galactic synchronization beam” that emanated from the , that it would pass through this beam during a period of 5200 tuns (Maya cycles of 360-days each), and that this beam would result in “total synchronization” and “galactic entrainment” of individuals “plugged into the Earth’s electromagnetic battery” by (December 21, 2012). He believed that the Maya aligned their […]
