Chart for the Summer Solstice, June 21 2011

summer solstice 2011The Sun enters the sign of Cancer at 1:16 pm EDT, an event that we call the Summer Solstice.  The Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year and the day at which the Sun reaches the highest point in the sky, but it is also a phase in the turning of the wheel of the seasons that is marked by the entry of the Sun into one of the cardinal signs (Cancer, Capricorn, Libra and Aries).  The cardinal signs are signs of initiation and action and when the Sun moves into one of these signs something is typically activated that has been dormant before.

Because of the astrological “Cardinal Drama” of the past few years, with Pluto entering the sign of Capricorn (it is now at about 6 degrees Cap) and Uranus moving into Aries (now at 4 degrees), and Saturn still in Libra at 10 degrees, every Solstice and Equinox, with the Sun at 0 degrees, has engaged the other planets in the early degrees of cardinal signs.  Since the charts for the solstices and equinoxes are tools for weather prediction and symbolize the overall energy of the following three months, it’s no wonder the past three years or so have been so dramatic.

The chart for the Summer Solstice 2011 is no less intense than the others and that is especially true for those of us in the US.  In the Solstice chart for Washington D.C.  we have the T-square of planets in cardinal signs (Sun, Uranus and Pluto) sitting right on the angles (within two degrees) when the chart is located to Washington D.C.   This suggests that the overall strife in the country, particularly the governmental factions which are […]

Skywatch is posted, and Gemini New Moon

I am having technical issues and for some reason right now Skywatch is only visible for me in Firefox, I can’t see it in Chrome or Internet Explorer.  If you can see it you’ll find it here.

In any case, here’s the introduction which includes the description of tonight’s New Moon:

The month of June begins with a bang and a New Moon in Gemini. This is also a solar eclipse because the lunar nodes are within 15 degrees of the Sun and Moon, but just barely – they are actually 12 degrees apart. So as eclipses go this is a pretty weak one and not likely to stir up too much trouble. This eclipse is the first of a series of three, and you can read more about the eclipse series here.

Three planets change direction this month: Neptune will turn retrograde on June 3rd, Chiron will turn retrograde on the 8th, and Saturn will turn direct on the 12th. (Planets don’t actually change direction of course, but as we observe their motion through the sky they will sometimes appear to move backwards and we call that “retrograde”. When they move forward again we call that “direct.”) As a planet is getting ready to change direction its motion slows down to a crawl, just as a car does when it is preparing to make a U-turn. At that time its influence is stronger than ever as the energy of that planet beams down with its full force and this is especially true of the outer planets which are transformational forces. With three planets changing direction this month we will almost certainly feel like the sands are shifting; that we are being realigned for a […]

Moving from Aries to Taurus

Mars in TaurusEach sign reacts to and improves on the sign that immediately precedes it, so when a planet like Mars moves from its own sign of Aries, which is courageous and vibrant but can also be impetuous and thoughtless, there is a shift into the more grounded stability of the Taurus influence.  Robert Wilkinson points this out in his post on today:

Mars now activates the stabilization of our affairs wherever we have Taurus in our birth chart. Mars in Taurus can be stubborn in doing things its way, so expect more brinksmanship and butting of heads in the political arena. Of course, this is also where once things are on track, they will move steadily forward to the desired ends, since Mars in Taurus is truly the irresistible force and/or the immovable object, sometimes at the same time!

As Taurus stabilizes what began in Aries, and Mars represents actions to pierce through inertias, expect activities that substantiate and confirm recent initiatives and beginnings that began in March and April. Keep developing fields that opened then, keep the disciplined activity going, figure out what you need to sustain the momentum, all while finding ways to enjoy yourself.

Venus and Mercury (which are currently still in a nice trio that includes Jupiter in Aries) are about to transition from Aries into Taurus over the next few days, so it’s a good time to build up the momentum while there’s still some Aries energy motivating us towards action.  Under the Taurus influence we seek comfort and security and tend to resist change.  Taurus offers an opportunity to sink deep roots and build a powerful base of determination so that we can truly enjoy our lives.

Taurus isn’t the […]

Mercury, Venus and Jupiter: Oh my!

venus mercury jupiter conjunctionMercury and Venus have been moving towards an exact conjunction over the past week, but today they align exactly.  On Wednesday May 11th the two will hook up with Jupiter as well, creating a triple conjunction of powerful magnitude.

Mercury represents communication and the transmission of information, but it also governs change and the fluidity of our experience.  Mercury is a bit of a shapeshifter, and in mythology Hermes/Mercury was the only god that could travel into the underworld to relay messages to Hades/Pluto from the other gods.

Venus and Jupiter are known as the “benefics,” with Venus often called the “lesser benefic” and Jupiter the “greater benefic.”   The combination of these two is considered to be very fortunate by many astrologers.  Venus enhances our ability to attract and refine, and Jupiter bestows confidence and faith which can assist us in expanding our sense of that which is possible so that possibilities become reality. This influence will remain in effect through May 15th or so.

The three planets align in the sign of Aries – the sign of fiery inspiration, motivation and courageous embrace of the unknown.  This triple conjunction brings with it an ability to break through barriers of all kinds since there is very little fear or hesitation to stand in the way of our ideals.

Fortunately Mars, the planet of assertive action, has moved out of its own sign of Aries into Taurus which adds a grounding and stabilizing effect to this expansive planetary dynamic.

Mercury and Venus will continue their dance together for the next few weeks, but they will move past Jupiter by the 16th when both Mercury and Venus move into Taurus and the connection with Jupiter is severed.   These […]

Dealing with fire: A flow chart

Some people, like my Aries friends, thrive on a heavy does of fire like the one we’re getting lately. They get energized and don’t mind the sleepless nights as they stay out late dancing the night away. Others of us are a little more disturbed by the force of what we may perceive to be chaos and forces that are beyond our control.

Things are a little easier now than they were when we had six planets in Aries fighting against a few more in Pisces, but there are still five planets in Aries and Mars, the ruler of Aries, is inching towards a conjunction to Jupiter which will expand that force of fire even more.  And let’s not forget Uranus, planet of radical action and electricity, is in Aries and will remain there for quite some time.

Perhaps that’s why there are record wildfires in Texas and California, even though it’s very early in the season, and why a torrent of electromagnetic energy unleashed 62 tornadoes in North Carolina in one day.

Fortunately for us, astrologer Shannon Garcia has provided us with a flow chart to help us effectively channel this energy.  Check it out here.
