Skywatch is posted! And the Taurus New Moon

May Skywatch 2011Tune in later for a post about the death of Osama bin Laden, but for now Skywatch for May has been posted just in time for the Taurus New Moon. You can read the whole article here, or if you’re not on my mailing list you can see what you’re missing here and read the abridged version.

Here’s the important information for the first week of May and the New Moon which occurs on May 3rd (today!):

During the month of May we get a bit of a breather.  The intensity of April’s fire energy, with so many planets in Aries, has subsided and while Mars is still separating from a conjunction to Jupiter which has amplified (Jupiter) the force for activation (Mars), and there are still five planets in Aries, over the past few weeks we have hopefully been able to integrate the power of that fire so that it is less disturbing and perhaps more energizing and clarifying. In May there are no major planetary aspects, and most of the planetary interaction comes from the faster moving planets and last only a day or so.

The image of the phoenix bird (the firebird) is a powerful one for the element of fire.  We usually refer to the phoenix in connection with Scorpio because of the regeneration after death, but it is also a good descriptor of the power of fire which consumes everything in its path and leaves a clean slate behind.  This is the force of the element of fire that we can use for our benefit if we can learn to balance and use the force of fire, which is pure instinctive inspiration and motivation at its core, and not let it overwhelm […]

Happy May Day, and a few more Royal Wedding thoughts

Today is the first of May, widely celebrated by neo-pagans as Beltane, the fire festival which honors Bel, the god of fire.  Because Beltane is a “cross-quarter” festival, meaning it occurs at the halfway point between the equinox and solstice, it will not actually occur until May 5th when the Sun reaches 15 degrees Taurus. In any event, with so many planets still in Aries, including Mars and Jupiter which reach their peak conjunction today, a fire festival is an excellent way to channel some of the fiery energy that abounds right now.

astrology of the royal weddingI’d like to return briefly to the Royal Wedding discussion.  Many astrologers have pointed out the fact that the wedding chart shows the Moon void of course at 26 degrees Pisces, meaning that the Moon is unaspected and will not make aspects to any other planets until it reaches the next sign (Aries) which it did on Friday just after the wedding.  Electional charts (charts that are used to “elect” a particular date typically would never have a Moon void of course which suggests that an astrologer was probably not used in planning this wedding.  (Whether or not the void Moon has an impact in our daily lives is a matter of great debate and most astrologers agree that focusing on such minutiae is not always helpful in our daily lives.)

In any case, since the Moon in a wedding chart represents the heart of the marriage, that void Moon reinforces my sense that the emotional heart of this marriage will not take hold.

One of my readers commented that Dharmaruci has the best posts on the Royal Wedding and while normally I would be offended by a comment suggesting that another […]

Mercury retrograde, March 30 – April 23 2011

Mercury retrogradeMercury turns retrograde today, taking us into three weeks of reconsideration and re-evaluation with potential communication and equipment glitches.  Mercury is in Aries during this retrograde, and since Aries is the sign of action and initiation it’s not too happy when it has to look backwards and review rather than take direct action.

Retrograde periods serve a function that goes beyond creating problems in our lives: they are opportunities for do-overs.  If you didn’t get something right the first time, this is a chance to go back and do it over again.  It’s a time for reassessing our priorities, for reviewing the things we have done and the plans we have set in motion.

While it’s generally true that contracts signed and decisions made when Mercury is retrograde often require renegotiation and revision, we can’t always put our lives on hold for three weeks.  Sometimes we have to begin a job or sign an important contract when Mercury is retrograde, in which case it’s helpful to know that communication problems are likely and be prepared for that.  If you CAN avoid starting something new when Mercury is retrograde it makes life easier, but life isn’t always about things being easy.  Life urges us to grow and evolve, and along the way we will encounter bumps on the road.

Mercury retrograde periods are excellent for reassessing the past, for redoing your plans, for looking back at your goals to see where they can be realigned with your present reality and hopes for the future.  It’s a time to gather your resources so that you can emerge at the end of the retrograde with a new confidence and with improved resources.

Around the table with Dharmaruci

Having sat and chatted around the table with Dharmaruci last summer when I was in England, I know how interesting a conversation with him can be.  Dharmaruci runs an astrology blog called that is one of the more interesting ones out there.

Now you too can enjoy this fascinating discussion of astrology and magic.  Such as this exchange:

D – I think of astrology as a system of knowledge that respects and uses all our faculties. Science is very strong on rationality and sensation (air and earth) but not very respectful of intuition and feeling (fire and air). . . and so to me, astrology is a more complete system of knowledge than science. Jung saw astrology as the summation of ancient knowledge — as an umbrella, if you like, that can incorporate all other systems. A proper relationship between astrology and science would see science as a specialisation within this broader tradition. What we have instead is a Sorcerer’s Apprentice situation: We have many brilliant scientific inventions, but havoc is being wreaked within the psyche because the apprentice has taken over, pretending to knowledge outside of his areas of competence.
H – And yet many people would argue that the ‘truths’ of science can be tested and proved, while the ‘truths’ of astrology are more subjective. . . .
D – Astrology works, but it can’t be explained in scientific terms. Like science, it is empirical, it is based on observation, but its truths are not statistical. They don’t rely on laboratories and ‘double-blind’ tests. They are the truths of a novelist, or of a work of art. It would seem ridiculous to try to reduce the insights of a novelist to a lab situation…but that’s what the scientists want to […]

Skywatch for February is posted

February horoscopesFebruary is a short but mighty month that brings us a big alignment of six planets in Aquarius (seven if you include Ceres).  You can read the whole article at this link, but here is an introduction to get you started.  I’ll be posting a more complete article on the New Moon tomorrow.

If you are not already a subscriber to my newsletter, please sign up in the sidebar.  You’ll receive a monthly translation of Skywatch into English each month as well as notifications of important astrological news.

As February begins, Jupiter has just moved into the fiery sign of Aries for the first time since last summer, igniting the energy of fire.  The element of fire is inspirational and energizing, but it can also foster destruction and chaos.  Fire must be harnessed with conscious intention in order to be utilized with the greatest effectiveness, and for this all of the other elements must be incorporated as well: air for intelligence, water for sensitivity, and earth for grounded practicality.

On February 1 there are four planets in Aquarius, and on the 2nd the Moon joins the Aquarian lineup for the Aquarius New Moon.  This is an intense influence that demands our attention, insisting that we refuse to settle for the ordinary, the every day.  Aquarius demands nothing less than the ultimate solution to any problem; that we force a situation into our view of the perfect outcome.

Venus is active on the 2nd, with a sextile to Neptune and square to Uranus.  There is tremendous creative force available now, and this force is embedded in the New Moon which occurs at 9:31 pm at 13 degrees Aquarius.  Uranus challenges Venus to break free of relationships that restrict us, […]
