Top ten things to know about Mars in Capricorn!

Mars often gets a bad rap because it represents the more sordid side of the personality: desires of all kinds, anger, rage.  Mars is named after the god of war, after all!  But Mars also represents inspiration, motivation, the ability to set good boundaries and defend ourselves.  Mars requires action and we generally only see its negative qualities when that action is stifled for some reason.  Mars isn’t necessarily destructive, nor does it necessarily inspire rage in the heart of humans.  But Mars needs an outlet in order to perform efficiently, and the planet that Mars travels through tells us the best way to channel Mars energy at that time.

Mars just entered the sign of Capricorn, the sign that teaches us to master the material world, and will remain there until December 4th  The symbol of Capricorn is the mountain goat, scaling great heights with courage and tenacity.  Capricorn loves structure and business – it follows the rules of society and is patient and disciplined in order to achieve its goals  Mars is said to be exalted in Capricorn because the potential wild energy of Mars is most effective when channeled through the order of Capricorn.

Each sign acts as a correction for the previous sign, so as Mars enters Capricorn it is leaving the sign of Sagittarius where it dislikes boundaries and rules.  The transition to a more structured environment may be somewhat challenging but will pay off in the long run.  While Mars is in Capricorn it will eventually set off the Uranus/Pluto square, creating abundant conflict and destruction anywhere there is stagnation that requires a new approach.

Season of the Witch

Scorpio stellium

Now that we are through the New Moon in Scorpio Lunar Eclipse and have begun the trip into the deepest realms of the subconscious, we have no fewer than five planets and luminaries as well as an asteroid, all lined up today in a Scorpio stellium: Venus, Sun, Pallas, Moon, Saturn and Ceres.

The art and magic of astrology originated in the Northern hemisphere and the seasonal implications are less apt for the Southern hemisphere (although astrology still works there!).   For those of us in the top half of the world, The Sun’s entry into Scorpio in late October marks the passing from the abundance of the autumn harvest to the cold and dark of winter.   Nothing is superficial now – our attention is focused on that which is real and true.

Scorpio is quite literally the Season of the Witch – it is at the midpoint of Scorpio that we celebrate the dark holiday of Samhain in the Celtic calendar – the day in which the veils between the dead and living are at their thinnest.  Under the influence of Scorpio we become more aware of the vibrations around us and more sensitive to danger.  With Mars as the traditional ruler of Scorpio and Pluto the modern ruler, we seek to discover tools that will help us to focus our will (Mars) and achieve a higher degree of personal power than we ever thought possible (Pluto).

Aleister Crowley said “Magick is the Science and Art of causing Change to occur in conformity with Will.”  This is Scorpio, in a nutshell.  Ideally this will occur in concert with the highest good of all, and in alignment […]

Advice to readers: Saturn as mentor and ally

Saturn mentorThis question came up recently and I wanted to share this discussion with others as well.

Anthony writes:

With Saturn in Scorpio squaring Jupiter in Leo, will that limit and restrict the gifts/opportunities/freedom Leos were to receive from Jupiter? Only manifest opportunities that are “real”/in our best interests? Make us work harder for success?

It especially concerns me with a 9 Leo sun and 17 Taurus moon. Saturn will take its final swipe at my moon as Jupiter lights up my sun the one and only time so I worry about being blocked from taking advantage of the opportunities I was supposed to get. By the time Saturn is out of orb Jupiter will be, too, so looks like I will miss out this time.

I don’t know anything about the rest of Anthony’s chart which could shed more light on his concern over lost opportunities and sense of powerlessness over the ebb and flow of opportunity in one’s life.  The square of Saturn to Jupiter CAN have the effect of limiting Jupiter’s expansion and encourages us to be sure that we are not all just expansion and optimism but also practical and grounded. Squares aren’t inherently “bad” but they are stronger – Saturn squaring Jupiter can be a time of great success because we work hard (Saturn) as well as think positively (Jupiter).

Of course there will be other things going on in his chart at the same time so we can’t really look at this one element and predict what will occur. A lot of it depends on where he is in his life and what he needs in order to learn to grow and become more integrated. But this phrase  troubles me: ” I worry about being blocked from taking advantage of […]

Personal thoughts on the sign Cancer

Sun in CancerThe Sun moved into Cancer at the Summer Solstice, and I have been thinking a lot about that sign.  I have a client who used to say “don’t call me a cancer!!” so I am now very politically correct, calling people born under that sign “Cancerians” rather than “Cancers.”  And this is somewhat representative of the Cancerian sensitivity.

I was raised in a family of Cancerians.  My sister and my mother share the same birthday (or did up until my mother’s death in 2012) in the early degrees of Cancer.  My father was born at 29º45′ Gemini, which is pretty darn close to Cancer, and anyway he has five other planets in Cancer.  So this was a very Cancerian bunch, especially for someone born with three planets in Libra and a Leo Moon and is mostly air and fire with a bit of fiery water (Scorpio/Pluto) thrown in.  I always felt like the odd man out, like there was some emotional handbook that they all had but which I was never given.  It wasn’t until I started doing client consultations that I began to understand these mysterious crabs.

If you watch the movement of crabs at the beach you will get a good sense of the Cancerian personality.  They can be somewhat fearful, especially when they are younger and their vulnerable shells are still soft.  I know they are delicious at that stage, but they are also extremely sensitive and if wounded while their outer shells are soft they become hard and crusty and it can be nearly impossible to break through.  Crabs don’t approach anything directly – they sidle up slowly when you’re not looking and are very easily spooked.  However, once they are ready to grab the […]

Retrogrades: A discussion for June 2014

Mercury retrogradeAs I was writing the Planetary Illuminations report for June (coming soon to an inbox near you if you are on my mailing list!!) I found that the discussion about retrogrades was substantial enough to deserve its own post.

Astrologically is not always astronomically correct because we observe the motion of the planets from our perspective here on earth.  From here, the planets sometimes appear to change direction and move backwards instead of forwards, and we call this “retrograde motion.”

As June begins, Saturn and Pluto are already retrograde, and during the month of June Mercury will turn retrograde on the 7th, followed by Neptune turning retrograde on the 9th, and Chiron will turn retrograde on the 20th.  By that time we will have five retrograde planets, which will tend to cause events to slow down and make it more difficult to move forwards.

If you think about a car making a U-turn you will get a sense of how the planet works when it prepares to change direction: Its motion slows down and then comes to a standstill as it makes the actual reversal.  When the planet starts to slow down its influence intensifies, especially if that planet is currently affecting planets in our own birthchart, and the energy of that planet becomes hard to ignore.  If it is Saturn, things feel heavy and we feel a great responsibility.  If it is Neptune, we may feel confused and lethargic but also crave music and meditation.

Once a planet turns retrograde, our attention is pulled back to the past.  Retrogrades provide us with an opportunity to revisit areas of our life that require further examination or revision.

The planet Mercury governs communication and learning, as well as other things involving the […]
