Venus retrograde and the significance of 40 days

40 days venus retrograde (This article first appeated in 2014.)

makes an interesting point – that the 40 days and 40 nights of the Venus retro period corresponds to the 40 days and 40 nights that Jesus traveled in the wilderness.

Forty is mentioned in the bible often, but most famously when Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness for forty days. Could this be referring to the astrological phenomena of Venus retrograde? After all, Venus has two sides to her. She is the goddess of love and war according to the Babylonians. The word Lucifer (which is often confused with Satan) means light-bringer and refers to Venus in her morning star phase. The ancients said the first few days of her Lucifer phase was a particularly dangerous time. People born with Venus as a morning star are said to rush headlong into love affairs and are very passionate. Venus as an evening star is has more of the receptive, traditional meaning.

I became curious about the significance of 40 days and 40 nights, because before Jesus was tempted in the wilderness for this length of time rain fell on Noah for 40 days and 40 nights.  Moses fasted for 40 days and 40 nights before he was given the Commandments. Jesus remained on the earth for 40 days and 40 nights after the crucifixion.  And Buddha is said to have fasted and meditated for 40 days and 40 nights before reaching Samadhi.  These 40-day periods seem to relate to periods of trial and being […]

Heads up! July’s lunar eclipse is the longest duration in a century

Blood moon eclipse July 2018

The July 2018 full moon [in Aquarius] presents the longest total lunar eclipse of the 21st century (2001 to 2100) on the night of July 27-28, 2018, lasting for a whopping 1 hour and 43 minutes. (In contrast, the previous total lunar eclipse on , lasted 1 hour and 16 minutes.) A partial eclipse precedes and follows the century’s longest total lunar eclipse, each time lasting 1 hour and 6 minutes. So, from start to finish, the moon takes nearly 4 hours (3 hours and 55 minutes) to cross the Earth’s . …

This lunar eclipse is primarily visible from the world’s  (Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand). South America, at least in part, can watch the final stages of the eclipse just after sunset July 27, whereas New Zealand will catch the beginning stages of the eclipse before sunrise July 28. North America, most of the Arctic and much of the Pacific Ocean will miss out entirely…

Some say that the effect of an eclipse is most powerful where it is viewable, but in my research of mundane events I have not seen this to be particularly true.  From an astrological perspective, the energetic intensity of an eclipse stems from the fact that the Sun and Moon are in a tight relationship to the lunar nodes. The nodes of the moon are known as the Dragon’s Head (North Node) and Tail (South Node), and in many ancient cultures it was said that during an eclipse a dragon did battle with the moon – a myth that has a basis in science because of the proximity of the […]

Uranus full of surprises – even astronomers say so!

Uranus comic by Sammy DC

Uranus IS the planet of surprise and sudden changes in paradigms, so it was fun to see posted on Facebook by my friend :

University of Arizona astronomer Erich Karkoschka … believes that Uranus’s southern hemisphere rotates in a way never before seen in gas giants. A gas planet’s thick atmosphere, filled with clouds, typically shows the same rate of rotation at the top and bottom. But on Uranus, it seems, the southern hemisphere is cycling much more quickly than up north — as much as 15 percent faster.

“The unusual rotation of high southern latitudes of Uranus is probably due to an unusual feature in the interior of Uranus,” Karkoshcka . “While the nature of the feature and its interaction with the atmosphere are not yet known, the fact that I found this unusual rotation offers new possibilities to learn about the interior of a giant planet.”

Unusual features, new possibilities, faster movement – these are all highlights of the astrological influence of Uranus on humans.

The synchronicity between the planetary names and their astronomical qualities has always struck me.  For example, Uranus rotates on its side, unlike any of the other planets. And one of the archetypes of Uranus is dancing to the beat of your own drummer as they say – following your own star, living your own authentic life.

In ancient times the astrologers WERE the astronomers.  It’s nice to see scientists admitting that they don’t have all the answers!

Saturn on the Scorpio/Sagittarius cusp

Scorpio Sagittarius cusp

Saturn, the planet of tests and challenges, entered Sagittarius in December but then retrograded back into Scorpio between June 14th and will move back into Sagittarius on September 17th.

While Saturn was in Scorpio, the sign that rules intensity, power, and sexuality among many other things, we saw a rise of sexual abuse allegations, including the eruption of a long-suppressed case against Bill Cosby, the exposure of sexual abuse rings in Britain, and the revelation of secrets after the hack of the Ashley Madison cheating website.  (Read more about Saturn in Scorpio.

Saturn is the teacher of the planetary pantheon, and it brings lessons into every sign through which it travels.  Saturn’s journey through Sagittarius has already brought challenges to transportation and immigration, both of which fall under the Sagittarius umbrella.  When Saturn retrograded back into Scorpio to complete its tasks there it didn’t leave behind the Sagittarian issues.

Immigration will obviously be a critical aspects of this 2-1/2 year trip of Saturn through Sagittarius which rules long distance travel and the exposure to foreign cultures which expand the mind.  Immigration is already shown to be a highlight of campaigns for the 2016 election as Republicans propose ways to keep out immigrants not only from Mexico but from Canada as well.  Floods of immigrants attempting to escape Syria are changing the face of Europe, and the result of further integration of Muslim culture with old Europe will bring with it a new set of challenges.  Camps to restrict (Saturn) the movement of these migrants is already causing problems which will continue to increase under Saturn’s passage through Sagittarius.

The lessons of each sign lead us to the next – in Scorpio we face our demons […]

Advice to readers: Saturn as mentor and ally

Saturn mentorThis question came up recently and I wanted to share this discussion with others as well.

Anthony writes:

With Saturn in Scorpio squaring Jupiter in Leo, will that limit and restrict the gifts/opportunities/freedom Leos were to receive from Jupiter? Only manifest opportunities that are “real”/in our best interests? Make us work harder for success?

It especially concerns me with a 9 Leo sun and 17 Taurus moon. Saturn will take its final swipe at my moon as Jupiter lights up my sun the one and only time so I worry about being blocked from taking advantage of the opportunities I was supposed to get. By the time Saturn is out of orb Jupiter will be, too, so looks like I will miss out this time.

I don’t know anything about the rest of Anthony’s chart which could shed more light on his concern over lost opportunities and sense of powerlessness over the ebb and flow of opportunity in one’s life.  The square of Saturn to Jupiter CAN have the effect of limiting Jupiter’s expansion and encourages us to be sure that we are not all just expansion and optimism but also practical and grounded. Squares aren’t inherently “bad” but they are stronger – Saturn squaring Jupiter can be a time of great success because we work hard (Saturn) as well as think positively (Jupiter).

Of course there will be other things going on in his chart at the same time so we can’t really look at this one element and predict what will occur. A lot of it depends on where he is in his life and what he needs in order to learn to grow and become more integrated. But this phrase  troubles me: ” I worry about being blocked from taking advantage of […]
