Neptune in Sagittarius and the astrology of the 1970s cults

RajneeshpuramI recently watched the Netflix documentary “Wild, Wild Country” about the town created by the followers of Baghwan Shree Rajneesh that began as a utopia of blissful cooperation and devolved into madness and unimaginably bizarre crimes of attempted murder and fraud.

The conjunction of Uranus (radical change) and Pluto (destruction of the old and transformation of the new) in the late 1960s took place in conservative Virgo, and the established morays of the previous decades were blown apart to smithereens.  Women began fighting for the right to be equal citizens.  People of color refused to sit in the back of the bus and demanded to sit at lunch counters and use any damn water fountain they pleased.

Religion was another arena that saw a radical transformation as the dogma of established religion was questioned and many began exploring other religions, including Eastern mysticism.  The acid experiments of the 1960s led to the spiritual seeking of the 1970s, symbolized most prominently by the conversion of Richard Alpert, colleague of Timothy Leary in the search for psychedelic enlightenment, who transformed into Ram Dass in 1971.

Neptune is the planet of spiritual experience and humanity’s search for an authentic connection with the divine.  Where Jupiter creates theologies and religious belief systems, Neptune says “forget all that nonsense and come directly to me.”  Neptune traveled through Scorpio between 1956 and 1969-1970 and inspired a desire to release sexuality from the shackles of marriage (Neptune in Libra) and eventually, in the 1960s, to experience sexuality as a pathway to bliss.  Neptune in Scorpio also generated a renewed interest in the occult, with the release of the Rider-Waite tarot deck to the general public in 1959.

Neptune moved into Sagittarius in 1970, bringing the Sagittarian interest in […]

“Stay Woke” and the Aquarian Age

Some of this content may be controversial to some readers. I welcome comments as long as they remain civil and add to an intelligent discussion.

“Stay Woke” is a slang term defined by the Urban Dictionary as: “Deriving from “stay awake,” to stay woke is to keep informed of the shitstorm going on around you in times of turmoil and conflict, specifically on occasions when the media is being heavily filtered- such as the events in Ferguson Missouri in August 2014.”  While most of us white people just started hearing the phrase recently, it was and then   in 2008 before it spread through African American communities after the death of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown.

The idea of being “woke,” or awake, is in my view a harbinger of the Age of Aquarius.  During the Age of Pisces there has been a sense of sleep.  Pisces teaches us to go with the flow – to connect with our dreams, to seek comfort in transcendence and the bliss of losing one’s self.  Under the Piscean influence humans relinquished control to the religious institutions which have dominated the power structures of the past 2,000 years.  Aquarius is the sign of awakening – of rational thinking.  Neither is better, and both have their dark sides.  But the idea that we need to wake up – keep our eyes open and see behind the curtain of Piscean illusion – looks to me like the transition between the Piscean Age and the Aquarian.

The meme of “Stay Woke” often edges into conspiracy theory.  As someone with a healthy amount of suspicion myself, this seems normal in a world where you are […]

The role of the Ascendant in defining ourselves

56602076 - what's your story written on the road sign with valley backgroundThe Ascendant and the Sun sign are often confused and I blame this on Sun sign astrology (so-called “horoscopes” that you see on the web and in newspapers which claim to predict the future based on the sign your Sun was in at the time you were born).  Sun sign astrology claims that the Sun describes your personality but this is actually the job of the Ascendant (also called the rising sign because it was rising on the horizon at the time you were born).   The Sun sign reflects our soul’s purpose this time around – astrologer Liz Greene calls the Sun sign the Hero’s Quest.   I like to think of the Sun sign as the “mission” that we were assigned when we came to earth.   This is not always visible to others, but the Ascendant, since it reflects our personality and the way we appear to others and the way we live our life, IS visible.

An acquaintance of mine popped into my office the other day.  She had always thought that she was born in the morning, but she found her birth certificate and discovered that she was born at night! So instead of her Ascendant being the sign of Cancer, which she had always believed, it apparently was Sagittarius, a very big difference.  This mind blowing discovery coincided with a big change in this person’s physical appearance which had inspired numerous personality changes such as becoming more outgoing and confident, both Sagittarian traits.

Not only that, as a result of this increase in confidence she has begun to make changes in her personal relationships (the Ascendant is the cusp of the First House of […]

A reader asks, “When will we know peace in the world?”

I received this in my email today:

I should think that every published astrologer would be writing about a time when all of these horrid transits and conjunctions will end. Or will they ever? Yet, I have scoured The Mountain Astrologer, online astro sites and subscribe to anyone who might talk about such events. It’s hard to keep a positive attitude when each new year seems to be nothing but another annus horribilus. When will we know peace in the world? When will all of this stress from the heavenly bodies subside? We’re exhausted with it.

I know that many people can relate to this person’s anguish and this has been a very long period of cataclysmic change, beginning in 2008 when Pluto entered Capricorn and continuing through 2017.  That said, according to the :  “Of the past 3,400 years, humans have been entirely at peace for 268 of them, or just 8 percent of recorded history.”

Statistically this is not the worst period of modern human history in terms of the number of political or war deaths as you will see from the table .   However, this does not change the fact that we are living through THIS period, and deeply affected by the trauma and destruction that we see around us.

It’s important to remember that “the stars impel, they do not compel.”  The planetary alignments create an environment which forces an adjustment where change is needed.  If our lives are flowing in harmony and we feel that we are in alignment with our soul purpose, difficult planetary aspects do not necessarily create terrible events.  But the Universe is always striving for balance, and whether in our psyche, our personal lives, or our national […]

Meditation: the Discomfort Zone

meditation Source unknown

Many people believe that meditation will bring peace and tranquility, and at a certain point, when we are freed from the distress of our discomfort, we do achieve the equanimity which many of us long for.

When I began meditating many years ago I was taught that the mind and its thoughts and reactions was the source of all problems, and practicing meditation would free me of its influences.  I spent hours in sitting meditation, working hard to eliminate all thoughts.  I became very good at being numb, but I did not achieve inner peace.  The more numb I became to the insistent chatter in the brain, the more anxiety I began to feel until I finally experienced full blown panic attacks.

I now believe that the real secret of meditation is in learning a mindful approach to our discomfort.  When we feel emotional or energetic discomfort we often reach for something palliative to relieve the discomfort.  Food, drugs, alcohol – all of these are methods of reducing the level of discomfort in the body that triggers distress.   Mindful breathing and focus can help us to befriend the anxieties and emotional triggers to go THROUGH them and release them rather than go BEYOND them as I was taught years ago.

The breath holds the secret to befriending our discomfort.  Many of us hold our breath, either on the inhale or the exhale, in a fear of letting go to the experiences in the body.  This is a learned reaction to stress or unpleasant emotions, and learning to regulate the breath through deep inhalation and slow exhalation can help to decrease the anxieties around our discomfort and slow our reactions to it.

This is coming up for me personally because transiting Uranus is hitting a sensitive […]
