Consciousness

A reader asks, “When will we know peace in the world?”

I received this in my email today:

I should think that every published astrologer would be writing about a time when all of these horrid transits and conjunctions will end. Or will they ever? Yet, I have scoured The Mountain Astrologer, online astro sites and subscribe to anyone who might talk about such events. It’s hard to keep a positive attitude when each new year seems to be nothing but another annus horribilus. When will we know peace in the world? When will all of this stress from the heavenly bodies subside? We’re exhausted with it.

I know that many people can relate to this person’s anguish and this has been a very long period of cataclysmic change, beginning in 2008 when Pluto entered Capricorn and continuing through 2017.  That said, according to the New York Times:  “Of the past 3,400 years, humans have been entirely at peace for 268 of them, or just 8 percent of recorded history.”

Statistically this is not the worst period of modern human history in terms of the number of political or war deaths as you will see from the table on this site.   However, this does not change the fact that we are living through THIS period, and deeply affected by the trauma and destruction that we see around us.

It’s important to remember that “the stars impel, they do not compel.”  The planetary alignments create an environment which forces an adjustment where change is needed.  If our lives are flowing in harmony and we feel that we are in alignment with our soul purpose, difficult planetary aspects do not necessarily create terrible events.  But the Universe is always striving for balance, and whether in our psyche, our personal lives, or our national […]

Meditation: the Discomfort Zone

meditation Source unknown

Many people believe that meditation will bring peace and tranquility, and at a certain point, when we are freed from the distress of our discomfort, we do achieve the equanimity which many of us long for.

When I began meditating many years ago I was taught that the mind and its thoughts and reactions was the source of all problems, and practicing meditation would free me of its influences.  I spent hours in sitting meditation, working hard to eliminate all thoughts.  I became very good at being numb, but I did not achieve inner peace.  The more numb I became to the insistent chatter in the brain, the more anxiety I began to feel until I finally experienced full blown panic attacks.

I now believe that the real secret of meditation is in learning a mindful approach to our discomfort.  When we feel emotional or energetic discomfort we often reach for something palliative to relieve the discomfort.  Food, drugs, alcohol – all of these are methods of reducing the level of discomfort in the body that triggers distress.   Mindful breathing and focus can help us to befriend the anxieties and emotional triggers to go THROUGH them and release them rather than go BEYOND them as I was taught years ago.

The breath holds the secret to befriending our discomfort.  Many of us hold our breath, either on the inhale or the exhale, in a fear of letting go to the experiences in the body.  This is a learned reaction to stress or unpleasant emotions, and learning to regulate the breath through deep inhalation and slow exhalation can help to decrease the anxieties around our discomfort and slow our reactions to it.

This is coming up for me personally because transiting Uranus is hitting a sensitive […]

A window of history

Great ConjunctionAstrologer Martin Davis posted this on Facebook:

Recent archeology places the Buddha’s birth at about 600 BC [or BCE]; Confucius’ birth is thought to be about 550 BC; Pythagoras’ birth time is currently estimated at 570BC, Lao Tzu at about 600 BC. What do these dates have in common?

In 577 BC there was a Great Conjunction [and I mean Great!] with the outer planets of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto running neck and neck between 10* to 13* Taurus.

I had never read this before and a brief internet search uncovered no previous articles on the subject so naturally I was fascinated.

Unlike the visible, or traditional planets and luminaries (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn) which preside over matters of the personality and personal existence, the outer planets act as transformational forces which inspire and assist in crisis and evolution.

Any conjunction ) aspect of outer planets brings about tremendous global upheaval and change and introduces a new element of human consciousness. Conjunctions correlate to the New Moon phase of the lunar cycle in which the Sun and Moon align and birth a new energy into the world.  Conjunctions of Neptune and Pluto, the two slowest moving planets (from our perspective on Earth)  occur about every 500 years.

There have been great teachers throughout time, but at no other time in history did so many great philosophers and spiritual sages incarnate within a century.

The outer planets weren’t discovered until the last few hundred years, so it is interesting to think that their influence could have been at work during this pre-discovery era.

Transits and Transformation: Turning Crisis into Healing

Art by Susan Seddon Boulet Art by Susan Seddon Boulet

As humans, we tend to think that happiness is better than sadness, that good luck is better than bad. We may avoid difficult confrontations and pursue more comfortable situations. When tragedy strikes our well-protected lives, we shout out to our god of choice: “How could you do this to me??” We believe that our birthright is the pursuit of happiness, and we spend our lives trying to protect ourselves from sorrow.

The soul, however, has a different journey. The soul travels an ancient evolutionary path that seeks wisdom and connection with the divine. Often in our desire to defend ourselves from discomfort, we erect barriers within ourselves. Often we become so effective in compartmentalizing our emotions we become cut off from our very selves, our soul and our spirit.

In astrological terms, the orbiting planets form geometric angles to our birthchart planets, or “transits.” Each transiting planet has its own nature, its own personality and its own purpose-calling upon us as the ancient gods they represent to bring forth something in ourselves that has been lost. The inner planets move quickly: a transit of Venus will encourage relationships and creativity, a transit of Mars demands that we defend ourselves appropriately. Easy Jupiter transits can bring financial opportunity, or liberate us from difficult situations, whereas the challenging transits can cause reckless and risky behavior. The outer, or transpersonal planets, including Saturn which acts as the bridge between the personal planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter) and transpersonal (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto), take much longer to traverse the zodiac and therefore their effects are felt for a longer period of time.

The planets in our birthchart also “progress” through time, particularly the […]

Esoteric websites to be banned along with porn in the UK

censor-this from DavidIcke.com

I think we can categorize this under the square of Uranus to Pluto:  Obsessive (Pluto) government practices (Capricorn) cracking down (square) the technological rights (Uranus) of individuals to feed their own minds (Aries).

From the Huffington Post:

The United Kingdom’s new internet filters promise to block much more than just pornography, according to a report by the digital advocacy organization Open Rights Group.

Last week, Prime Minister David Cameron announced online porn would soon become automatically blocked in order to “protect children and their innocence.” The filters will be implemented by the UK’s major internet service providers, which encompass 95% of British web users.

Based on conversations with several ISPs, Open Rights Group says the new “parental controls” will reach far beyond pornography. By default, the controls will block access to “violent material,” “extremist and terrorist related content,” “anorexia and eating disorder websites,” and “suicide related websites.”

In addition, the new settings will censor websites that mention alcohol or smoking. The filter will even block “web forums” and “esoteric material,” though Open Rights Group does not specify what these categories would include.

In the United States pornography (NOT including, of course, child pornography) is considered a first amendment right and pornography in any case is subject to a wide range of interpretation.  Back in Queen Victoria’s day a bare ankle was considered pornographic and piano legs were discreetly covered up in order to avoid embarrassment.

Including “esoteric material” opens up a whole other question – is the British government afraid of the masses becoming educated in esoteric practices that for thousands of years been the exclusive province of a small minority?  This has been called by some a “War on Consciousness” and perhaps can be […]
