“Self-knowledge is only the beginning”

self understanding One of the more challenging yet rewarding aspects of my work with clients is taking the leap from “here is why you have had these problems” to “here’s what you can do about it.”  It’s always reassuring to hear that your desire to flee a committed relationship comes from the fact that libertarian Uranus challenges your “I want to be closer” Venus.  Or that you are afraid of success because Saturn’s voice of “You’re not good enough” sits right on your Jupiter in Leo that says “But I should be fabulous!”

After a few years of exciting realizations like this coming out of consultations, I started to realize there was a big need for something more – a way to help a client strategize their way out of the boxes they put themselves in.

has an interesting article on the same topic:

It is practically an article of faith among many therapists that self-understanding is a prerequisite for a happy life. Insight, the thinking goes, will free you from your psychological hang-ups and promote well-being.

Perhaps, but recent experience makes me wonder whether insight is all it’s cracked up to be.

Not long ago, I saw a young man in his early 30s who was sad and anxious after being dumped by his girlfriend for the second time in three years. It was clear that his symptoms were a reaction to the loss of a relationship and that he was not clinically depressed.

“I’ve been over this many times in therapy,” he said. He had trouble tolerating any separation from his girlfriends. Whether they were gone for a weekend or he was traveling for work, the result was always […]

The Planetary K index

If you follow , you might have noticed that they keep track of something called the Planetary K index.  Yesterday afternoon there was a strong solar wind stream that stimulated a higher level of geomagnetic activity and a K-index reading of 5, stimulating bright auroras like this one from Norway.  The editors at Spaceweather explain:

[T]he Earth’s magnetic field (let us say the ‘geomagnetic field’) is responding to a outwardly propagating disturbance from the Sun. As the geomagnetic field adjusts to this disturbance, various components of the Earth’s field change form, releasing magnetic energy and thereby accelerating charged particles to high energies. These particles, being charged, are forced to stream along the geomagnetic field lines. Some end up in the upper part of the earth’s neutral atmosphere and the auroral mechanism begins.

Our physical body is surrounded by an electromagnetic energy field, and the more sensitive we become energetically the more we are apt to discern the subtle changes in the earth’s geomagnetic field.  Since I have been watching the K-index I have noticed that I am noticeably more agitated when the K-index is elevated than when it is not, even when there are no other astrological influences that would induce this kind of experience.  Here is a graph that is updated regularly which provides data on the K-index.

Individuals with a strong Uranian element to their chart, such as planets in Aquarius or aspects from personal planets to Uranus, and especially those who have an opposition of Chiron to Uranus in their charts which suggests a sensitive nervous system, may find it interesting to track the K-index.  I haven’t found any metaphysical research involving this data so we’ll have to create our own!

Evolutionary implications of the holographic universe

Holographic Universe image from Mondolithic Studios

Modern science is turning our notion of what constitutes the Universe on its ear, and nowhere is this more evident than the theory that the Universe itself is a hologram.  Beginning with quantum physics and particle/wave theory, which suggested in the early part of the 20th century that the Universe is operating on many different levels than our three-dimensional reality would suggest.  One of its early proponents, Niehls Bohr, wrote: “Anyone who is not shocked by quantum theory has not understood it”.

I make no pretense of understanding quantum theory, but I know that somehow it explains the nature of the multidimensional physical reality that mystics have talked about for thousands of years. David Bohm’s theory of the Implicate Order suggests that everything is connected with everything else – the principle that underlies all of holistic spirituality. Since everything in our Universe is made up of energy, and the movement of energy enfolds the entire Universe of space and time, this “enfoldment” may continue endlessly into infinite dimensionality.

It is psychedelicized thoughts like this that used to send me into a tailspin of terror!  But this concept of an endless flow of connectivity between dimensions is something that has been in the forefront of mystical thought since the beginning of time.  The very basis of astrological thought, the adage “as above, so below” is a holographic concept.  From the Upanishads, written in the second millenium bce:

As great as the infinite space beyond is the space within the lotus of the heart. Both heaven and earth are contained in that inner space, both fire and air, sun and moon, lightning and stars. Whether we know it in this world or know it not, […]

Farewell to the Chiron/Neptune conjunction

Image from HeartSoulVisionAlthough Chiron and Neptune only have made one exact conjunction during the past two years (it occurred on February 17, 2010), they have been within a few degrees of each other for this entire time.  They are still about as close as you can get without being exactly conjunct, about six minutes of arc apart.  But having just changed direction to move forward after a long retrograde period, they will begin to separate.

Chiron and Neptune both operate on the level of the soul; neither planet is very concerned with supporting the ego or the personality.  Chiron’s work is to clear the emotional debris of past experiences by awakening dormant emotions and forging new energetic pathways of healing.  Neptune’s role is in dissolving the ground upon which we rely so that we will awaken to a higher expression of the Self.  I like to call Chiron the “Soul Healer” and Neptune the “Soul Teacher,” so under these two planets we have been inspired/urged/forced to address deeper matters in our lives.

This has been particularly true for those of us in our 50s who have Pluto in the later degrees of Leo.  Chiron and Neptune have been opposite Pluto in these charts, instilling a sense of urgency in healing the wounds of the past.  I have been able to watch the process of the Chiron/Neptune conjunction in the experiences of my clients.  Back in early 2009, when the conjunction first began to align (peaking in April through July when Jupiter was involved as well) clients of all ages  were reporting intense experiences of grief and mourning as old wounds resurfaced, seemingly out of nowhere.   As Chiron and Neptune continued their dance, the intensity of the emotional […]

Chiron and Neptune – the final dance

Chiron and Neptune are within twelve minutes of a conjunction now, about as close as they are going to come before finally separating in late November.  Although their conjunction is not exactly at the same degree, the influence of these two planets has been making itself known since early 2009.  Chiron is the healer of the soul, and Neptune connects us to our transcendent, creative and spiritual selves so these two planets together are a powerful pair.

Over the past eighteen months since Chiron and Neptune have been traveling in tandem there has been a powerful urge in the collective psyche for healing and reparations of all kinds.  See this link for other articles about this planetary combination.

On a personal level, many of us have had deep emotional experiences of release that freed us from the past, or which helped us to break through a longstanding block.  For others this has been a time filled with emotional pain and worry as we struggled to hold on, not realizing that it’s the letting go which ultimately frees us.

In any case, as Chiron and Neptune, both retrograde, take their final bow we may find ourselves looking back to see where there might be wounds that still haunt us; that still prevent us from truly evolving.  These two great spiritual teachers can provide the wisdom that we need to release the stuck energy of the past.

Quoting myself from an earlier article at the dawn of the conjunction:

Both Chiron and Neptune pose difficulty for the expression of the ego. Chiron requires that we process the wounds of the psyche before the ego can manifest in a truly healthy form, and Neptune calls […]
