The astrology of the US addiction to guns, 2017 edition

Astrology of guns USAMuch of this article is reposted from a post from 2013.  Since then we have had the worst mass shootings in US history:

  • Las Vegas, Oct 2017: 58 dead
  • Orlando, June 2016: 49 dead
  • Virginia Tech, Apr 2007: 32 dead
  • Sandy Hook, Dec 2012: 27 dead
  • Texas church, Nov 2017: 26 dead

Everywhere you turn these days the discussion is about guns.

Guns are not a new topic for discussion, but the feverish frenzy over which gun rights advocates are protecting their rights to own assault weapons and other types of weapons meant for mass killings is rather recent.

There is no nation like the United States in terms of gun ownership.  The (Sibly) chart of the United States has Sagittarius rising, which echoes the expansive philosophies that have always drove the country towards constant expansion and religious ideals, both Sagittarian concepts.  We normally would look towards Mars for signs of warfare like behavior, but in the US chart the passion for guns is found in the placement of Pluto in the second house.  This fanatacisim about guns originates not in an aggressive desire to assert force (Mars) but in a hunger for freedom (Sagittarius ascendant) and a relentless (Pluto) drive to accumulate masses of money through manipulation of the nation’s ideals (second house).

American gun lovers don’t want to accumulate stockpiles of weapons to kill their neighbors.  They want these weapons because they believe that it will protect that Sagittarius rising freedom.  It doesn’t hurt that Uranus (planet of liberation from oppression) conjoins both Venus (partners) and Mars (aggression) in the chart.  That Uranus/Mars conjunction especially denotes a radical desire for liberty at all costs.  Americans own twice as many guns as any other country, per capita.

That’s where Pluto in the second house enters the picture, in the form of the National Rifle Association.  The NRA spent $15 million in the 2012 presidential campaign, using a fearmongering campaign promoting the idea that Obama planned to take away gun rights (he wasn’t).  This same organization used the school shooting in Newtown Connecticut to promote the worry that the government was attempting to take away the guns of American citizens (it wasn’t).  as gun sales accelerated after the shooting, with prices for 30-round magazines rising exponentially.

This, my friend, is what happens with Pluto asserts its hunger for power in the second house of money and possessions.  The fear (Pluto) over the loss of liberty (Sag rising and Uranus/Mars) can generate big bucks (second house).  Military style assault rifles have become the new symbol of freedom: the “” according to the president of the National Rifle Association.

It’s always helpful to follow the money when attempting to understand something about the United States, and it’s no coincidence that much of the funding for the NRA comes from the gun industry.  From Business Insider:

In its early days, the National Rifle Association was a grassroots social club that prided itself on independence from corporate influence.

While that is still part of the organization’s core function, today less than half of the NRA’s revenues come from program fees and membership dues.

The bulk of the group’s money now comes in the form of contributions, grants, royalty income, and advertising, much of it originating from gun industry sources.

Since 2005, the gun industry and its corporate allies have given between $20 million and $52.6 million to it through the NRA Ring of Freedom sponsor program. Donors include firearm companies like Midway USA, Springfield Armory Inc, Pierce Bullet Seal  Systems, and Beretta USA Corporation. Other supporters from the gun industry include Cabala’s, Sturm Rugar & Co, and Smith & Wesson.

The NRA also made  to industry companies marketing products in its many publications in 2010, according to the IRS Form 990.

Additionally, some companies donate portions of sales directly to the NRA. Crimson Trace, which makes laser sights,  of each sale to the NRA. Taurus  for everyone who buys one of their guns. Sturm Rugar  for each gun sold, which amounts to millions. The NRA’s revenues are intrinsically linked to the success of the gun business. …

The chief trade association for gun manufacturers is the , which is, incidentally, located in Newtown, Conn. But the NRA takes front and center after each and every shooting.

“Today’s NRA is a virtual subsidiary of the gun industry,” , executive director of the Violence Policy Center. “While the NRA portrays itself as protecting the ‘freedom’ of individual gun owners, it’s actually working to protect the freedom of the gun industry to manufacture and sell virtually any weapon or accessory.”

There are two reasons for the industry support for the NRA. The first is that the organization develops and maintains a market for their products.  The second, less direct function, is to absorb criticism in the event of PR crises for the gun industry.

With Uranus in Aries since March 2011, this excitement over personal liberty has become almost hysterical.  Uranus itself rules rebellion against the status quo and the kind of radical change that destroys outmoded structures, and in Aries, the sign of the pioneer and individualist, that revolutionary fervor has become more intensely personal.  Uranus will remain in Aries until 2019, so it’s unlikely that we will see this story become less significant anytime soon.  On the contrary, as Uranus continues to bump up against Pluto in a challenging square formation over the next couple of years the story is likely to become more significant and likely, more ridiculous.

Personally, I have  a hard time understanding how a culture that is so obsessed with personal liberty where guns are concerned can be so oppressive when it comes to a woman’s personal health or wardrobe.  In my state of North Carolina the state legislature recently introduced three bills in the same session: two to allow guns in restaurants and in schools, and one to prohibit exposure of a woman’s nipples.

If nipple exposure could generate cash, I am certain that someone would find a way to defend it.  In the meantime, wardrobe violators, be warned!  America’s passion for liberty does not extend into your personal life.  It is only intended for corporations and profit.

The astrology of the Las Vegas shooter

Las Vegas shooter astrologyAfter the worst mass shooting in modern US history (we can save the massacre of the native Americans for another discussion but let’s not forget it entirely), and that is really saying something since we have had more than 1,500 shootings since the Sandy Hook shooting in December 2012, there appears to be nearly no information about the shooter, now deceased, who masterminded the plot to kill as many people as possible from the 32nd floor of a Las Vegas hotel.  With the recent news that Stephen Paddock was prescribed Valium, some are speculating that it was the Valium that motivated this quiet man to this horrific act.  But one look at his astrological birthchart and you can see that this was a very complicated man.

Paddock’s astrological Sun was in the sign of Aries, the sign of the Warrior, but it was part of a very challenging Grand Cross.  There was a part of him that craved connection with others and wanted to get along (Sun conjunct Venus)  but he had trouble establishing those connections (Venus retrograde) and was shy and insecure, especially where women were concerned (Venus opposed by Saturn).  He was very hard on himself and felt he had a great deal to prove (Saturn retrograde and opposite Sun) and he often felt misunderstood by others (Neptune opposite Sun).

A challenging relationship with his father is evident by the stressful aspects from three intense planets to his Sun – the father often appears in the chart as the Sun.  He was likely criticized and failed to meet his father’s approval (Saturn retrograde opposite his Sun) and there is evidence of the chart of a separation from the father (Uranus square Sun).  The challenging aspect between Chiron to the Sun and Venus shows an individual who incarnated with a deep soul wound, a sense of abandonment, and a likely resulting distrust of others (Chiron square Venus).

As if that weren’t enough, he has an intense need for control and a fear of loss, as well as a high level of emotional intensity combined with a dislike of emotion.  His Mars (aggressive force) is powerful but thwarted, leading to a buildup of rage yet the need for this tight control prevents a release of this emotion (Aquarius Moon opposed by Pluto and Taurus Mars squaring both (T-square)).

It’s interesting that Paddock’s brothers Eric and Patrick, who apparently don’t speak to each other, both mentioned that Stephen was the least violent brother in the family when they were growing up and that each of the brothers had had to do a lot of work to deal with the anger resulting from their childhood.  The Paddock brothers (there were anywhere from 4 to 7 depending on the news source) were the son of a con man and bank robber who was jailed when Stephen was 7 – just as transiting Saturn set off the complex Grand Cross in the chart.  As the eldest he likely felt the need to take care of the family and hold everything together.

Many of you already know that  since 2010 Uranus and Pluto have been in a stressful dance in the sky (Uranus  in Aries square Pluto in Capricorn).  This has led to a great deal of global change and unrest, and for those of us whose personal charts have been affected by this planetary combination, the change has been extremely personal indeed.  The Uranus/Pluto square set off the Grand Cross in Paddock’s chart beginning in 2014 – the intense effect of Uranus to create a restless need for change and a new paradigm combined with Pluto’s hydrogen emotional bomb which can have the effect of forcing us to confront our darkest and most secret emotions.

Apparently Paddock first sought a benzodiazepam (Valium) prescription last year, presumably to deal with the anxiety produced when Uranus and Pluto rattled his cages and prompted the eruption of the rage that had long simmered in his subconscious.

Jupiter, the planet of abundance and confidence, is beloved as the “Greater Benefic” – a planet that bestows many blessings and gifts.  But we also often find it as the active principle in the chart of people who commit acts such as this – the influence of Jupiter provides the confidence that might otherwise be missing.  That is exactly what we see here with All About Favorite Jupiter triggering the challenging Grand Cross.

It would be a mistake to excuse Paddock’s actions on his chart.  Lots of people were born the same day (I was only able to find one famous person: country music artist ) and plenty of people (myself included) have charts that are this fraught with emotional difficulties.  Humans are amazingly resilient and generally able to work through all kinds of horrific childhoods and situations.  But the astrological chart does help us to understand the dynamics of these criminals and perhaps educate us to better anticipate these kinds of actions.

Note: I am sure this post will generate posts about gun control.  Please be kind to your fellow readers in the discussion.

The astrology of Andreas Lubitz, suicide co-pilot

Andreas Lubitz astrologyRecent news reports reveal that the copilot in the recent crash of a Germanwings airliner had locked the pilot out of the cockpit and steered the plane into a mountain, killing himself and 149 other people, leaving the rest of humanity mystified.  Those who knew him described him as friendly, polite, quiet – something we often hear in these situations.

A look at the astrological chart of an individual can often provide an explanation for why someone behaves in a certain way.  It should never be taken as an excuse.  There are plenty of people with the same planetary configurations that this gentleman had who would never have flown a plane full of passengers into the Alps.  I present this analysis in order to educate about the workings of the planets – not to excuse the actions of the copilot.

Andreas Lubitz (born December 18, 1987, time and place unknown) has several difficult and painful combinations of planets in his chart.  Born with the Sun in Sagittarius, typically a freedom-loving expansive personality, his Sun was flanked by Saturn (restriction) and Uranus (rebellion) and opposed by Chiron (wounding and healing).  The stressful opposition (180 degree aspect) of Chiron to the Saturn/Sun/Uranus combination shows an individual who has come into this life with a predisposition towards emotional sensitivity and probably with a great deal of psychological wounding.

Strong Chiron contacts such as this often result in depression because one must go THROUGH the wounds in order to heal and ultimately become free of the emotional pain.  Some personality types are better suited to the kind of introspection and psychological work required to heal Chironic wounds.  Sagittarius does not care for that kind of emotional work and often responds by running away from it.

The Sagittarius stellium forms an exact square aspect to the North and South Node in the chart, the points that reveal our soul’s passage from past (South Node) to future (North Node), and a Grand Cross is formed when Chiron is included.  This suggests that in Lubitz’s evolutionary journey this was a pivotal lifetime to resolve major issues from the past.

However, the Scorpio stellium in the chart embraces one’s wounds with a mad passion and in an ideal situation will fearlessly dive into the psychological wasteland in order to dredge up these old wounds so that they can be revealed and ultimately healed.  His Moon was in Scorpio, revealing his passionate nature, and the Moon was aligned with both Mars and Pluto, the traditional (Mars) and modern (Pluto) rulers of Scorpio.  Mars/Pluto people often carry a great deal of anger and sometimes rage that can be difficult to express when it is hidden behind the Sagittarius veneer.  The Black Moon Lilith, a point that is associated with rage and relationship issues, is locked in a square to his Mars/Pluto and we will probably see a great deal of drama in his relationship history.

When you combine the deep grief of the Chiron alignments with the rage of Mars/Pluto, it is not hard to see where the impetus for such an act of brutal fury could arise.  Ideally someone with this kind of rage and anxious depression would seek help, and in fact we know that Lubitz did seek help. However, he disregarded the advice of psychiatrists to stay out of work despite a written excuse, and hid his illness from employers.  I suspected that this act of vengeance was planned and deliberate and this morning revealed that he had told his girlfriend that he was planning “a heinous act that will be remembered forever.”

At the time of the crash the planet Saturn, which has been stationary for about a month, had been sitting right on Mars in the progressed chart.  This is a transit that can be enormously frustrating as Mars seeks action and Saturn puts the brakes on.  At the same time transiting Jupiter comes along bringing confidence and a tendency towards expansive acts, setting off the Mars/Pluto conjunction and triggering a firestorm of anger and rage.

As I said earlier, planetary configurations are NEVER an excuse for actions that destroy or harm others in any way.  Each of us always has a choice to take positive actions to improve our own lives and the lives of others.  But the astrological chart can provide insight into the inner workings of the mind that is otherwise unavailable.

More sexual abuse allegations under Saturn in Scorpio

Image from Scriptonite

Image from Scriptonite

Last fall I wrote about the surge of prosecution for sexual violence that began when Saturn entered Scorpio:

Saturn entered Scorpio about a year ago and will take another year and a half or so to travel through that sign.  Scorpio is traditionally ruled by Mars and its modern ruler is Pluto, and these are the two planets that govern sexuality.  Mars deals with the physical drives including the sexual drive and energy, and Pluto addresses matters of intimacy and the “petit mort” of sexual surrender. Pluto is also fearless when it comes to the dark side of the human experience, and we often find rape and abusive behaviors under its banner, and Scorpio tends to be an investigator in areas of life where the more carefree signs might fear to venture.

In its role as Celestial Teacher, Saturn brings consequences and lessons in areas of life governed by the sign it travels through, and we have seen many instances in the news over the past year in which governmental bodies (Saturn) are getting tough on sexual violence (Scorpio) in their communities. …

Saturn’s last journey through Scorpio occurred between 1983 and 1985.  Pluto had also just entered Scorpio and the AIDS crisis (death/Pluto through sexuality/Scorpio) began.   At the same time there was an eruption of child sexual abuse cases and the concept of repressed (Pluto) memories of sexual abuse (Scorpio) brought women out of the closet into the therapist’s office.  Those years between 1983 and 1985 while Saturn was in Scorpio brought the phenomenon of childhood sexual abuse into the public eye.  In 1983, April was designated National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Now that has its roots in the 1980s has emerged, rocking the British government to its very core, revealing that high level politicians took boys and girls out of care facilities to abuse sexually.  We see the workings of Pluto in Capricorn here as well – the destruction (Pluto) of the governmental structure (Capricorn) that permitted these horrific actions to take place.  The cover-up may have extended all the way to then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

The astrological timing of the emergence of the scandal is interesting since it falls an exact Saturn cycle after the alleged abuse occurred.  Saturn is the prosecutor – he presides over rules and generally demands that the line be toed.  Under Saturn in Scorpio Pope Francis has made Vatican history by implementing a justice system (very Saturnian!) against abusers of children.

Saturn’s travels through Scorpio involve a clearing in more than just sexuality – the deepest recesses of the psyche are being excavated now and there is tremendous potential for healing and deep psychological work. Those of us with an active Scorpio or Pluto emphasis in the chart are meant to live in this realm, and Saturn in Scorpio sends us back to school so that we will more willingly enter the dark side.  Those of us with lots of Jupiter or Sagittarius will be the most uncomfortable in the Scorpionic darkness, but Saturn’s teachings will be a required course nevertheless.

The human experience consists of both light and darkness, and the mission of Saturn in Scorpio is to relish that darkness and fight the light therein.

The astrology of Elliot Rodger, the “Virgin Killer,” Part II

elliot rodger astrologycatch up on Part I here.

The psychological picture that we can derive from the astrological chart of Eliot Rodger shows an individual with a significant wound  (Saturn/Chiron/Sun) to his sense of Self.  The writings clearly reveal a diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (see this article in Psychology Today,” the root of which is a wound to the Self.  The “Narcissistic Wound” usually occurs in childhood and in a weak personality the individual tends to blame others rather than to seek the healing which Chiron requires.

The narcissist personality is unable to view other people as anything other than an extension of their flawed selves.  From his writings we do not see that Elliot Rodger ever asked a woman out or was directly rejected by him.  Instead he was driven by jealousy and rage over what he perceived other people had that he did not.  The square from Jupiter to Pluto gave him a self-righteousness and tendency towards fixed beliefs.

Originally I rectified the chart to have Scorpio rising.   Rodger writes: “Finding out about sex is one of the things that truly destroyed my entire life. Sex… the very word fills me with hate. ”  This extreme reaction can really only be explained by a strong astrological Pluto or Scorpio.  He craved sex, and equated it with power – very Pluto/Scorpio.  And yet he was revulsed by it, and afraid of it.  It was his fear of sex that kept him from women.  Without a correct birth time we can only guess.

Transits and Progressions

elliot rodger astrology

We discussed in Part I the fact that Rodger’s life appears to have been idyllic, according to his own words and Youtube videos, until the age of seven when his father left and his parents divorced (transiting Saturn squaring the Sun/Saturn/Chiron system in his chart.

He writes that at age nine he became aware of social hierarchies and the fact that life was inherently unfair.  Rodger’s Mars was in Virgo, the sign that seeks perfection in all things.  This can be a placement that is critical of others, but especially of oneself.  Rodger writes of that time period:  “Life will become a bitter and unfair struggle for self-worth, all because girls will choose some boys over others.”  At the time transiting Pluto was squaring Mars in the progressed chart – a planetary cycle that can bring power struggles and great conflict.

At age 14 he went off to high school just as transiting Saturn was opposite the painful Saturn/Sun/Chiron system in his chart.  He talks of being bullied but it appears from his writings that this simply took the form of teasing: having failed at skateboarding (which he took up to try to be “cool”) he didn’t like being called a skateboarder, and when the kids discovered this they called him a skateboarder and were generally insulting as middle school kids are.  But an individual with Chiron so strong in their chart is extremely vulnerable to this kind of teasing because they are so sensitive and reactive and during this period transiting Chiron was also setting off the natal system which would have been extremely painful.  “The sheer cruelty of the world around me was so intense that I will never recover from the mental scars.”

At age 16 and 17 he writes of wanting to become a dictator and rule the world: at the time his progressed Sun was making a challenging square to natal Pluto, intensifying the Plutonian qualities of rage and and the compulsive fear of sexuality.  “My whole world twisted even deeper into darkness and despair as my depressing life continued on. My hatred for people who have sex festered inside me like a plague.”

In 2009 he had a break from planetary intensity and writes that he wanted to be productive and educate himself about the workings of the world (transiting Saturn was in a harmonious sextile to his Sun).  He read voraciously during this period but was unable to continue because of the rage he felt seeing couples in the library.

Ideally, as we grow and develop we seek to learn about ourselves and the world and those of us with difficult charts are driven by our emotional pain and suffering to seek healing and personal growth.  Some individuals instead seek blame and retribution for their suffering, and when we blame others for our own problems we become stuck in a cycle from which we will never emerge.  Astrology demonstrates that the problems that we have in our lives begin in our charts, and we are born with those charts before anything happens to us.

Larger implications

This horrific tale falls into a larger tale – the square from Pluto in Capricorn (power and society) to Uranus in Aries (individual liberty).  Elliot Rodger left many clues and even announcements about what he intended to do, yet no one intervened.  This brings up a larger question about the intersection between our personal liberties (Uranus in Aries) and the need for society to stop crime before it happens (Pluto in Capricorn).  At what point does this take us into a “Minority Report” kind of world, where a pre-crime unit seeks out individuals who could potentially commit a crime?

I tend to see this kind of event as a canary in the coal mine.  What is happening to our young people as families disintegrate?  When I was young I was the only kid in my class from a “broken home” – now it is the norm.  Parents remarry, have new children, leaving their older kids out in the cold.  These events serve as more than just warnings about the use of guns in our society – they are warnings about our society itself and the mental health of our young people.  While it’s true that Elliot Rodger was in some ways an isolated instance, continues to increase at an alarming rate.

While it’s true that limiting access to guns could stem the tide, the message is clear: our human culture is severely troubled and needs healing.
