Death

Pluto in Capricorn – can Google conquer death?

Google's anti-death projectBefore Pluto’s discovery bestowed on him the title of the Lord of Death, that role was occupied by the planet Saturn.  Pluto’s role in the concept of death has to do with the surrender of life as we know it and the regeneration of something else in its place.  Saturn forces us to deal with the difficult questions and the hard aspects of life, reminding us that life is short and that death is at the door.

Saturn is the ruler of the sign Capricorn, and since 2008 Pluto has been traveling through Capricorn and will continue to do so until 2023 when it will move into Aquarius.  Pluto in Capricorn initiated the financial contraction that brought about the Great Recession of the past few years (read more about Pluto in Capricorn here).

Pluto tends to create transformation in the areas of life governed by the sign it travels in, so Pluto’s journey through Capricorn has already begun to transform the way we handle the fact of death in our world.  Because it is Capricorn, an earth sign of practicality and governance of the material world, it is the very fact of death itself that is undergoing a transformation.

Under Pluto in Capricorn we have seen the idea of zombies and vampires take hold in the popular imagination – creatures that straddle the line between life and death.

Now Google has launched a company called Calico dedicated to research into the causes of aging and ways in which the human lifespan can be extended in an effort to “.”  As an astrologer this is interesting because Pluto will leave Capricorn for the technology sign Aquarius in 2023, and by then technology and human existence […]

The astrology of L’Wren Scott

Lwren ScottDear readers – do not despair, I will soon be bringing you soothing words to calm your fears over the upcoming Grand Cross that is causing tabloid news to shiver around the globe.  But meanwhile I have been fascinated with the personage that was L’Wren Scott who took her own life last week.

The birthchart of L’Wren Scott (born 4/28/1964 time unknown) shows someone who was born at the peak of the conjunction of Uranus to Pluto in 1964, with the Sun in Taurus.  The Uranus/Pluto conjunction presided over the huge social cataclysm that we now call “The Sixties” – individuals who were born between 1962 and 1968 carry this archetype in their charts and are driven to create social change and transformation.  Between 1964 and 1966 Saturn and Chiron opposed the Uranus/Pluto conjunction, and all of you born during those years have a certain degree of painful challenges (Saturn) and emotional wounds (Chiron) that require constant disruption and transformation (Uranus/Pluto).

What interests me about L’Wren is the difficulty she seems to have had establishing an identity of her own.  She was adopted into a Mormon family and then changed her name at age 18 when she began a career as a fashion model in Paris.  During her Saturn Return she moved to LA and became a PR rep for Prada and then a stylist to the stars.  Her chart is a lucky one, with the Sun conjunct both Mercury (intelligence) and Jupiter (good fortune), but the Sun makes an opposition to Neptune, the planet of mystical transcendence, illusion and delusion.

Neptune/Sun people find it difficult to figure out who they are, and worse, they are misperceived by others (see my earlier post on this topic).  L’Wren […]

The astrology of Paul Walker’s death

Paul WalkerActor Paul Walker died on November 30th when a 2005 Porsche Carrera he was riding in crashed into a light pole and burst into flames.  Walker was most noted for his role in the “Fast and Furious” franchise of vehicular-oriented action films so it is ironic that he died in an automobile accident.

Automobiles are ruled by Mercury which is concerned with short journeys as opposed to plane rides to distant lands.  Mercury was important in Paul Walker’s chart in several ways: Mercury is the traditional ruler of Virgo (I personally believe that Chiron is the modern ruler of Virgo although this is a matter of interpretation) and Walker’s Sun was in Virgo, as was his Mercury.  When Mercury is in one of its own signs (Gemini is the other) it is stronger in its expression and more important in the chart, and when Mercury rules the Sun, the essential Self of the individual, its power becomes magnified to an even greater extent.

We typically don’t think of Virgos as being particularly reckless, although there is a type of Radical Virgo (such as Amy Winehouse) in which  other chart dynamics (such as Mars or Uranus placements) conflict with the Virgo element to drive the individual into reckless and radical behavior.  We don’t see that in Walker’s chart, and indeed Walker’s “Fast and Furious” character Brian O’Connor served as the steady counterpoint to Vin Diesel’s wild and testosterone-driven lead character.

This makes sense with Walker’s Taurus Mars – a slow and steady Mars that is not excitable or overly aggressive.  Mars in Taurus is the proverbial bull who is slow to anger, but when anger erupts it explodes with a powerful force.

Walker’s chart was not a […]

If you could predict death: 2013 edition

predict death

I do a fair amount of what I call “repair readings” – readings for people who have been told things by other astrologers that are upsetting and sometimes ridiculous.  Like the time a client was told that at a certain time she would meet someone and it would be the only opportunity she would ever have to find her soulmate. Or when an astrology told a client that her daughter would die on a certain date.

In 2008 I wrote a post “If you could predict death, would you?”  The subject has come up again because of a discussion on a Facebook group in which I participate and since 2008 there is more information available on the subject out on the web.

The whole idea of predicting death is based on the idea that the time of death is fated – that it is set in stone and can’t be changed.  This concept in itself is a huge point of argument among astrologers.  I personally believe that our family of origin, our astrological chart, and the timing of the planetary cycles that affect us are all fated, but that at an early age we begin to make choices that affect the rest of our lives.

When I was with my mother in the last months of her life I witnessed something else that was pretty amazing – when she was near the moment of death she suddenly decided that she wanted to go to the hospital.  She was quite insistent about it and the ambulance was called, and she lived another three months.  The hospice nurse told me that this is quite common – they speak about it as a “surge of energy” that lasts for a […]
