The Uranian Mystique

Uranus Aquarian ageI’ve been writing for some time that as we head into the Aquarian Age the idea of gender will continue to blur, and that has certainly proven to be true.   in the Daily Beast online news magazine wrote:

Are we having a trans moment? Until recently, transgender issues were nearly invisible in the mainstream press—but now, everywhere you turn, transgender stories are being told. From  and , two trans models currently walking the high-fashion runways, to the outrage over , the hapless, now-canceled ABC comedy featuring two men who resort to drag to get a job, transgender awareness is growing exponentially by the moment—seeping into pop culture in films like Albert Nobbs.

Take a glimpse at your TV screen, movie theater, and your iPad and you might agree. In a recent Saturday Night Liveskit, host Ben Stiller played a male passenger on an airplane. Suddenly he leans over across the woman in the middle seat and asks the unseen person sitting in the window seat, “Don’t I know you?” The camera pans to Stiller, dressed as a woman, as the words, “Get To Know Your Future Self,” flash on the screen….

The question is why is this shift happening now?

The answer, of course, is Uranus (please refrain from making scatalogical jokes here!).  Aquarius is ruled by both Saturn, the god of form and structure, and Uranus, the god of innovation and change.  As we move into the Aquarian Age we will find that the structures upon which we build our world continue to mutate and transform, giving more voice to the unusual and the individuals that don’t conform or fit into established norms.  We see this in popular culture with the popularity of […]

The world has still not ended, but the renewal is at hand

rapture Uranus PlutoDespite lots of hysteria in some circles over Comet Elenin as a harbinger of doom, and more predictions by evangelical preacher Harold Camping that the world would erupt in flames on October 21st – we are still here.  Comet Elenin as it zipped by Earth, and with the disintegration of the comet the theory that Elenin was actually Niburu, the lost planet disintegrated as well.  And Mr. Camping’s prediction that the apocalypse would occur yesterday appears to have been incorrect – for the third time.  Now that is persistence!!

We seem to be in the midst of more “end of the world” hysteria than at any time since the Millenium.  Perhaps this is because as word spreads of the end of the Mayan calendar on the Winter Solstice 2012 it becomes tempting to frame the concept of “the end of the world” in our own reality.  For Christians perhaps it’s the Rapture; for conspiracy theorists it is the return of our brethren from space.  For followers of New Age spirituality it’s Ascension into other dimensions.

There’s no doubt that there is an acceleration of energy as we hurtle more completely into the Age of Aquarius.  The shift of Uranus, ruling electromagnetic energy, into Aries which is so dynamic and initiatory has intensified the experience of human life.  It’s impossible to deny that Something Important is happening on the planet, but the experience is larger than anything we can hold in our human brains.  But still we try.

I could be wrong, but I don’t believe that the world will end on the Winter Solstice next year.  But I do believe that life as we know it, and civilization as we have […]

Androgyny and the Aquarian Age

I have always found it interesting that the worldly definition of “Uranian” according to Wikipedia is

Uranian is a nineteenth century term that referred to a person of a third sex — originally, someone with “a female psyche in a male body” who is sexually attracted to men, and later extended to cover homosexual gender variant females, and a number of other sexual types.

Delving a little deeper, I find that the origin of this association with the word Uranian with the “third sex” originated with a German scholar named Karl Heinrich Ulrich who was what we could today call transgender, meaning he identified as a woman Oscar Wilde in a man’s body.  The term Uranian was picked up by Victorian writers such as Oscar Wilde, who wrote: “”To have altered my life would have been to have admitted that Uranian love is ignoble. I hold it to be noble – more noble than other forms.”  (Ulrich’s chart shows Venus opposite Uranus, and Uranus squares the Moon in Wilde’s chart.)

As we transition into the  Aquarian age, it’s not surprising that gender roles are blurring and homosexuality is becoming more openly accepted.  Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, the planet that inspires us to live a life that is authentically true to ourselves as possible.  Uranus governs radical behavior and rebellion against the status quo, and this includes greater acceptance of lifestyles that don’t fit into the rigid social norms that fall under Saturn’s domain.  With Pluto, lord of destruction and regeneration, traveling through Capricorn, Saturn’s sign, these rigid social structures (Capricorn) are being pummeled and demolished.

As an astrologer I use the term “Uranian” to describe any person or trait that reflects this […]

Waxing outer planet cycles

For some time now I have wanted to do an analysis of the outer planet cycles to see how they affect global periods of transformation so I was glad to see in which he discusses the fact that the current cycle of Uranus in Aries in a square to Pluto in Capricorn is part of a larger cycle in which all three outer planets (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto) are in the waxing phase of their relationships to one another.

Like the Sun and Moon, planetary cycles have phases which begin with the conjunction (corresponding to the New Moon), the opening square (corresponding to the first quarter Moon), the opposition (corresponding to the Full Moon), the waning square.  The waxing phase of all cycles is an expansive period in which new ideas are created and change occurs.  DR calls it the “creative, constructive” phase and reports that the last two times all three outer planets were in the waxing phase were 1479-1538 CE and 965-1029 CE.

The outer planets represent transformational forces – their influence goes beyond the personal limits of our individual lives, so it makes sense that the interactions between the outer planets create forces that often feel as though they are beyond our control.  But they also serve the purpose of pushing us beyond our comfort zones so that we are forced to develop and progress – as individuals, as collectives, and as nations.

The period between 965 and 1029 CE witnessed the flowering of Arabic civilization, and the next period of waxing phases, from 1479-1538, was marked by a push for exploration beyond Europe into new lands.  DR notes that our current waxing phase began in 1993 and will continue until […]

Tensions flare as Mercury, Mars and Pluto collide

As you know if you follow my , over the past week or so we have seen a challenging alignment of these three planets which culminated on December 13th.  Mercury just turned retrograde on the 10th so it is still moving pretty slowly, and will remain within five degrees of Pluto for the next few days.  All planets are in Capricorn, the sign that represents structures, governments, tradition.

Uranus, the radical revolutionary, also changed direction on the 5th, and its influence is very visible in the dramatic events that have transpired over the past week or so, beginning with the arrest of Julian Assange and the explosion of the Wikileaks documents – (the radical (Uranus) exposure of information (Mercury) that reveals the secrets (Pluto) that are rocking the stability of national governments (Capricorn).

Mercury presides over communication and learning, but also transportation and messages.  Mars is the fiery god of war and Pluto the god of destruction so any alignment of these two planets can get pretty intense.  When Mercury joins in, there can be a heightened chance of arguments, disputes, and traffic problems.

The explosion of  a city bus in my hometown of Chapel Hill North Carolina yesterday, for apparently no reason, is eerily reflective of this triple conjunction since it involves the element of transportation, explosion and fire.

Then there are the riots.  Rioters in England last week attacked a car carrying Prince Charles and his wife Camilla when they drove too near a demonstration against university tuition hikes.  This occurred just as Mercury was preparing to turn retrograde in conjunction to Pluto.

Two days later, tensions in Russia flared after the shooting of a football fan that resulted in violence against ethnic minorities.

Yesterday riots erupted […]
