Sunday inspiration: Why me?

Art by NC Wyeth Art by NC Wyeth

I have two good friends with cancer, so this question is coming up a lot these days. And recently I did a reading for someone who was taken ill with pneumonia and since then suffered a seemingly never ending series of health problems and pain.  I’ve had clients who have been in terrible car accidents that paralyzed them.  Horrific abuse as children. Being fired from a job at which they excelled.

These events may seem terrible on the surface, and it would be easy when undergoing a drastic and terrible time to feel like Job in the bible on whom Jehovah visited a never ending series of trials.  But hidden in nearly all of these events is a kernel of magic that can transform our viewpoint and the way we see our world.

Cancer has been much on my mind lately because of my friends.  The last thing they want to hear from me is that there is a gift of magic hidden in their cancer.  I’ve never had cancer, so how do I know?  And is that really helpful?  What if they can’t find that gift, does that make them somehow a lesser person?  And yet there are many stories of people with serious illness who have found a new way of looking at their lives that completely transformed them.

Nine years ago I wrote this article about “the bright side of cancer.”  In this article I quote a number of people, including Lance Armstrong who said “Cancer was the best thing that ever happened to me,” he said. “I don’t know why I got the illness, but it did wonders for me, and I wouldn’t want to walk away from […]

Sunday inspiration: Longing to Belong

Art by Monica Stewart Art by Monica Stewart

Venus is in Cancer right now, enhancing our longing to belong to a tribe, a family of souls that connect us to the earth.  This longing for connection conflicts over the next day or two with Uranus in Aries – the individualist, the loner.  This conflict between our need for individual space and our need to belong is central to the human condition and creator of much of our personal and political conflicts.

To inspire healing on this day where our desire to belong is conflicting with our need to separate, I offer this beautiful writing from the late John O’Donohoe.

Our world desperately needs to come in from the lost islands of desiccated individualism and learn to stand again on the fecund earth where vibrant and vital interaction can happen between people.

Our world is facing so many crises ecologically, economically, and spiritually. These cannot be overcome by isolated individuals. We need to come together. There is incredible power in a community of people who are together because they care, and who are motivated by the ideals of compassion and creativity.

When such a community develops and maintains its own vision, it will not fall into the trap of being prisoners of reaction and beginning to resemble more and more the opposition. It will not deconstruct in the introverted power games, but maintain its care and critical focus.

When such a prophetic community is nourished by prayer and animated by Divine Longing, the harvest of creativity and belonging which it can bring is unlimited.

A change of focus as the lunar nodes change signs

futureThe Nodes of the Moon are not planets – they are purely mathematical points that show where the path of the Moon crosses the path of the Sun (called the “ecliptic”).  The North, or ascending, node acts as a signpost to guide us into the future – it points the way for our soul’s evolutionary growth.  The South, or descending, node is a signpost from the past.  Through the South Node we release people, places and things which we carry with us that are no longer needed.

Some traditional and Vedic astrologers see the South Node as being “malefic,” or a “debility” and in fact, the energies around the South Node often hold us back.  They show where we are most comfortable and sometimes they show aspects of past lives which we have brought into this one in order to heal and evolve.

The North and South Nodes are always in opposite signs, reflecting the polarity of the astrological pantheon, and they change signs approximately every eighteen months or so.  On October 9th the mean calculation for the North Node will move from Libra into Virgo.  Some astrologers use the “true node” which will change signs on November 11th

(One of many things astrologers argue over is whether to use the “mean node” or the “true node.”  Steven Forrest has written a perfect article on the nodes which I can’t improve upon for you astrology geeks.)

When the North Node changes signs there is a shift in focus for all humanity, and the North Node moving into Virgo signifies a greater awareness of our responsibility to others, our connection to the food that nourishes us, and the organizational details that are required for life on Planet Earth.  At the same time we are required […]

Sunday inspiration: A life beyond time

12194876_s

“Have you also learned that secret from the river; that there is no such thing as time?”

That the river is everywhere at the same time, at the source and at the mouth, at the waterfall, at the ferry, at the current, in the ocean and in the mountains, everywhere and that the present only exists for it, not the shadow of the past nor the shadow of the future.”

Hermann Hesse, Siddhartha

The mind lives in the realm of time – looking back into the past with regret or nostalgia; looking forward to the future with anxiety or anticipation.  The soul lives in a realm that is free from time or judgment of any kind.  The stillness of being completely present with all that is offers a bliss and joy that goes beyond that which any worldly event can bestow.

The cold of winter offers an opportunity to slow down and witness the magic of stillness.  As the mind and the heart become one, the soul sings with the joy of awakening and connection with the timeless Source itself.

Happy New Year! Moving forward in times of change

2015 new year astrologyFor many, the first day of a new year is a day like any other, and to think otherwise is just a trick of the calendar. But a magical life is filled with symbols and meaning, and the passage through the doorway into a new year can be filled with the magic of transformation.

The Romans celebrated the first day of the year as a festival to Janus, their god of gates, doors, beginnings and endings. janusThey named the month of January after him, and portrayed him with two faces: one looking back and one looking forward. Janus presided over transition from past to future, the passage from childhood to adulthood and into old age. One of his faces was often portrayed clean-shaven with the other bearded.

Gates and doors are both portals from one experience to another. We enter through a gate and leave a part of ourselves behind; we enter the world of the unknown when we transition from one phase to another. Sometimes we seek change, sometimes we embrace it. Other times we fight it – holding on to the past for dear life. However we approach change it is, of course, inevitable. No matter how hard we wish for the day to remain, the night will come – followed by the next day of new beginnings.

I love the African concept of “Sankofa,” which literally means “it is not taboo to go back and fetch what you forgot.” The word “Sankofa” comes from the Sankofa bird which flies forward while looking backwards. Sankofa teaches that we must look backwards to look forwards, reclaiming and preserving the past as tools for the future. In this […]
