Who will care for the poor in the Aquarian Age?

Aquarian AgeNo one can really tell when the Age of Aquarius begins.  This is a 2160 year cycle, and it doesn’t begin or end on a particular date.  But I believe that we are in the transition period between the Age of Pisces and the Age of Aquarius.

The spread of Christianity dominated the Age of Pisces, and while there have been some horrific consequences as a result (think the brutality of the Crusades, the annihilation of Native Americans and other indigenous groups, etc.) it has primarily been Christian and other religious groups that have cared for the poor.

One of the rulers of Pisces is Jupiter, and Jupiter rules religion, the construct of meaning that we create for ourselves and share with others.  During the Age of Pisces the ideology of shared ideas has prevailed, and for a person to be without religion was unthinkable.

As we move into the age of Aquarius, ruled by Saturn traditionally and Uranus as modern ruler, there is more of a focus on individual rights and liberties and perhaps less compassion that is one of the higher manifestations of the Piscean archetype.  While Aquarius is all about fairness and justice for everyone, there is less of a sense of empathy and more of a fervor for liberty which we can certainly observe in today’s political landscape.  Aquarius loves mankind in general but finds it more difficult to be emotionally connected, hence the image I chose for this article.

Two years ago I wrote an article entitled “Will religion survive the Aquarian Age?”

There is no doubt that the presence of religion in our lives is changing, especially in the United States which, with Jupiter-ruled Sagittarius rising and Jupiter conjunct the Sun in the […]

A crescendo of violence leads to hopeful transition

climacticOn November 1st, Uranus and Pluto clashed in the sky for the fourth  of seven total phases that will continue into 2015 (see more about this cycle in the sidebar if this is new to you).  On November 3rd there was a full moon eclipse in Scorpio, the sign of intensity and passion.  This was an intense week, full of emotion and inner conflict.  For some, that inner conflict spilled out into acts of violence.

During that week there was a noticeable increase in violent acts.  For example, in Chicago five people were murdered during the first three days of November, despite a declining murder rate in that city.   cried “How to make sense of four families slain in four days?”  after four entire families in four different states were killed between the 1st and the 5th of November.  One disturbed young man opened fire in a mall in Paramus, killing only himself, and another went on a rampage at LAX airport, killing two TSA officers. Three people were killed when a gambling operation at a Detroit barbershop went sour.

These things happen all the time, but intense planetary configurations such as the combination of events at the beginning of November bring our own inner conflicts and stress to a peak that often spills out into the outer world. When this is combined with the global stress of economic and political disorder such as we are seeing today, the result can be a cocktail of violence and disturbance.

The good news is that the planets are settling down and we are heading into a rest period.  No eclipses, no stressful planetary alignments for the next few months means that we can assimilate […]

Saturn in Scorpio: Getting tough on sexual violence

Saturn in ScorpioSaturn entered Scorpio about a year ago and will take another year and a half or so to travel through that sign.  Scorpio is traditionally ruled by Mars and its modern ruler is Pluto, and these are the two planets that govern sexuality.  Mars deals with the physical drives including the sexual drive and energy, and Pluto addresses matters of intimacy and the “petit mort” of sexual surrender. Pluto is also fearless when it comes to the dark side of the human experience, and we often find rape and abusive behaviors under its banner, and Scorpio tends to be an investigator in areas of life where the more carefree signs might fear to venture.

In its role as Celestial Teacher, Saturn brings consequences and lessons in areas of life governed by the sign it travels through, and we have seen many instances in the news over the past year in which governmental bodies (Saturn) are getting tough on sexual violence (Scorpio) in their communities.

In North Carolina where I live UNC students filed a grievance with the federal government accusing the university of failing to adequately protect students from sexual assault or prosecuting these assaults.  The same thing occurred previously in Montana, resulting in a rewrite of rules that are becoming the standard for colleges across the country, and similar investigations are occurring everywhere, including Colorado, California, Pennsylvania, Tennessee.

In the US military support is growing for for prosecuting sexual assault in the military.  “The Pentagon estimates that there were 26,000 sexual assaults in the military last year, but only 302 prosecutions resulted from complaints.”  Those are appalling numbers.

In Delhi India, all four defendants in a  trial for a gang rape that resulted in the […]

Autism therapy in the Aquarian age

15423320_sThere is no doubt that we  are heading into the Age of Aquarius.   Estimates for the new age range from  sometime between 2060 (Dane Rudhyar) and 2800 (Rob Hand), but a 2160 year cycle does not happen overnight.  There is a transition phase and I personally believe that we are in that phase.

I have written a great deal about autism in these pages, and it is my feeling that the wide spread of children born in the autism spectrum is a signal that as humans we are mutating to adapt to the new energy of the new age.

Aquarius is the sign of technology and transpersonal detachment, so it is not surprising to see that there is a trend towards :

[T]here is increasing evidence that kids with autism respond more naturally to machines than they do to people. Psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen, the director of the Autism Research Center at the University of Cambridge in England, along with other autism experts, believes that robots, computers and electronic gadgets may be appealing because they are predictable, unlike people. You can pretty much guess what a computer is going to do next about 90 percent of the time, but human interactions obey very few entirely predictable laws. And this, Baron-Cohen explains, is difficult for children with autism. “They find unlawful situations toxic,” he says. “They can’t cope. So they turn away from people and turn to the world of objects.”

This is a distinctly Aquarian idea that disconnects intelligence from emotion and feelings, and a suggestion for what the coming age might bring.  In fact, many have written about a “technological singularity” in which there will be no distinction between humans and machines.  We […]

Saturn in Libra meets Pluto in Capricorn: The Marriage Amendment

gay marriage astrologyHere in North Carolina citizens are voting on a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.  I have been listening to some of the conservative talk radio shows in an attempt to find out the reasoning behind the necessity for this amendment.

It seems to me that if people are so concerned about the sanctity of marriage the first thing to be outlawed should be divorce.  This is really less about marriage and more about the perceived “wrongness” of homosexuality.  But since we are in a Saturn in Libra phase where the Celestial Taskmaster (Saturn) is dealing with issues of relationship and partnership (Libra), it’s no wonder that the boundaries of conventional social mores in relationships are being tested.

Saturn is the ruler of Capricorn, and both share a love for the status quo and The Way It’s Always Been.  The people who are speaking out for this new constitutional amendment tell us that marriage has been between a man and a woman since the beginning of time, so why change it?  (Let’s ignore for a moment the fact that marriage between people of different races was illegal in North Carolina until 1971.) This is where Pluto comes in, because Pluto is the destroyer of things that no longer serve us, and in Capricorn Pluto is knocking the heads off of all of our  sacred cows.

At the same time the square of Uranus to Pluto is creating rebellion of all kinds, and even staunch conservatives are on this and many other matters.  This is a time of change, and change will be inevitable.  Those who try to anchor to  the shore will find their boats shredded in the tides.
