More friendship advice from Saturn in Libra

If you live in North Carolina you can visit me this weekend at the Body Mind Spirit Expo in Raleigh at the fairgrounds (Kerr Scott Building).  We have lots of beautiful rocks and crystals for sale, and I’ll be doing readings and mini readings.

Meanwhile, in other Saturn-related relationship news, researchers in Edinburgh studied 200 students to determine their feelings about Facebook friends.  At least 12% of them were anxious about their Facebook obligations, and that 12% had an average of 117 “friends.”  The remaining 88% had an average of 75 “friends.”  (This is rather astonishing, because I know high school kids who have over 900 Facebook friends.)

You can , but this was interesting to me because I had just received a Realtor magazine with a cover story titled “Overfriended,” in which the writer revealed that he had spent the past year unfriending people on Facebook.  This author cites a study about a “Dunbar’s number” that limits the number of stable relationships a person can have to 150.

I too decided last year to pare down my Facebook friends to a more manageable number of people that I actually know.  To me the beauty of Facebook is keeping up with the people that you know but don’t get to see very often.  My oldest friend who lives in another state and who I only talk to once a year on our birthdays.  People that I have met online and want to know more about.  Astrology clients who want to share more of their lives with me.  Frequent commenters on my blog who always have interesting things to say.

Like everyone else, I was rather thrilled when my Facebook friend number kept rising, but when […]

A Valentine’s Day astrology forecast for my readers

Valentines day astrologyToday has the potential to be filled with passion and love with Venus still within range of a conjunction to Pluto.  Venus rules our relationships with others and the way that we connect with each other, and Venus is in the exceedingly practical sign of Capricorn right now.   In Capricorn, Venus has the discipline to remember to send flowers, and to organize a beautiful date for the loved one.

Pluto is the planet of intensity and depth, and in combination with Pluto there is often an overwhelming desire to connect more deeply than ever before.  There is a great deal of all kinds of passion floating about, so if there is anger between you and your loved one it is likely to find an outlet under this influence.  This is particularly true because Venus is approaching a challenging aspect to Saturn, the planet of tests and delays.

There will be a lot of romance in the air anyway, though, because the Moon is approaching a conjunction to Neptune that heightens our ability to love and to see the best in those around us.  Neptune is creative and artistic, and inspires us with a sense of longing for a divine connection.  Under this influence we can find the spiritual partnership that underlies the day to day reality of marriage or living together.  Because four planets are in Aquarius now, we also have a greater ability to create interesting new ways to spend Valentine’s Day.

This Aquarian influence offers a positive effect to those of us without partners for whom Valentine’s Day is often an isolating experience.  Aquarius celebrates the individual and the community, and enhances our experience that no matter what our relationship status we […]

“2010’s World Gone Wild”

wild weatherBloomberg reports:

This was the year the Earth struck back.

Earthquakes, heat waves, floods, volcanoes, super typhoons, blizzards, landslides and droughts killed at least a quarter million people in 2010 — the deadliest year in more than a generation. More people were killed worldwide by natural disasters this year than have been killed in terrorism attacks in the past 40 years combined.

“It just seemed like it was back-to-back and it came in waves,” said Craig Fugate, who heads the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency. It handled a record number of disasters in 2010.

“The term ‘100-year event’ really lost its meaning this year.”

This is not surprising astrologically, since the charts for the equinoxes and solstices are often used as tools for weather prediction.  The chart for the Summer Solstice was closely tied into the Cardinal Drama that we’ve seen over the past year was an intense one (see the details in this earlier article), suggesting climactic summer weather around the globe.   The chart for the Fall Equinox featured the square of Saturn to Pluto aligning with the Equinox Sun and portending more crisis (Saturn) and upheaval (Pluto), as well as dramatic change (Jupiter conjunct Uranus and the Moon) likely in the realm of water (all three signs in Pisces).  Not to mention the ongoing influence of the Chiron/Neptune conjunction which has had the effect of lancing a painful boil on the face of the earth to see what might erupt there and ultimately be healed from the experience.

It looks like we won’t get any respite this winter since the chart for the Equinox includes a lunar eclipse  and a lineup in Capricorn that includes Mars and Pluto along with the Sun […]

Saturn in Libra: The Gift of Beauty

We often think of Saturn as the “Celestial Taskmaster,” and grumble about his tests, challenges, delays and disappointments.  But we sometimes forget that he is also the giver of wisdom and the kind of strength that comes through overcoming adversity and difficult situations.

Beth Owl’s Daughter wrote a beautiful post about the that includes these words of wisdom:

Blessed is your gift of Beauty in all things,
and the beautiful body and spirit you have given me,
With which I am able to celebrate, create and participate.

This bead in my gratitude prayer beads can be a challenge for me. It is often quite difficult for me to say that I have a beautiful body and spirit.  Okay, maybe I can buy into having a beautiful spirit a littleeasier.  But beautiful body?

“Ha!” says the inner critic.  I was never the pretty one. I grew up in the shadow of a young mother who (I am not kidding!) was constantly and accurately compared to Elizabeth Taylor and Vivian Leigh. My sisterhas always been the beauty of the siblings, certainly not me. …

I knew early on, much to my mom’s despair, I was not cut out to be a girly girl, a prom queen, debutante, or sorority chick.  I was by turns a tomboy and a rebel and a hippie and a feminist.  The constraints and definitions of beauty for girls and women were dead wrong in my view, even when I was too young to know why. …

If there is beauty in all things (even the saddest, the grimmest, the most difficult), which I do believe, then there is beauty in me, too. And not only airy-fairy spiritual, but physical beauty.

I have arms and legs that move and do amazing things without me hardly even thinking about it. […]

Venus and Jupiter direct and the Taurus Full Moon

Venus Jupiter directThe two planets of good fortune, Venus and Jupiter, have both been traveling retrograde and in the next few days they will be changing direction, moving forward again in what astrologers call “direct motion.”  Planets obviously don’t orbit in reverse, but we observe the movement of the planets from our perspective on earth which creates some anomalies in their travel patterns.

When planets slow down and make a “station” before they change direction their influence is quite powerful, almost as though they are shining a laser beam in our direction.  Venus and Jupiter are called benefic planets because they are considered to have a positive influence on the human experience.  Venus is the planet of love and attraction, and Jupiter governs good fortune, confidence and optimism.  When these planets are retrograde we often experience either doubt and worry as we look to the past and re-evaluate our problems, or else we can become bogged down from decisions that resulted from misplaced confidence and trust.

But retrograde planets don’t doom us to misfortune.  Venus retrograde periods are times to pay attention to the way we relate to others, and to re-evaluate the relationships that we have with people in our lives.  Some we may want to eliminate, and some we may want to re-focus our attention towards.  Jupiter retrograde periods provide an opportunity to free ourselves from restrictions (either situations or ideas) that hold us back from being able to expand ourselves and continue to grow.  It’s true that these are not always the optimum periods for business and wealth creation, although the past few weeks have seen the US stock market rise to its highest point in three years, largely due to the continuing conjunction of […]
