Mercury retrograde

Sunday inspiration for Mercury retrograde

Dr. Suess

“I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, It’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, And that enables you to laugh at life’s realities.”

Dr. Seuss

We can think of Mercury Retrograde periods as times when we look through the wrong end of the telescope.  This can seem to us like a “mistake,” or we can take another view and find richness in the experience of a different perspective.

Living successfully through Mercury retrograde periods

Mercury retrograde June 2014Mercury turns retrograde June 7, and you may have already noticed that communication is getting wonky and glitches are everywhere.  Yesterday a client’s phone service was temporarily terminated in the middle of our consultation which is an everyday type of occurrence when Mercury is retrograde.  (If you missed my posts on retrogrades you can catch up here and learn more about the positive aspects of retrograde planetary cycles.)

Conventional wisdom instructs us not to make any big decisions or sign contracts when Mercury is retrograde.  Yet Mercury retrogrades for three weeks four times a year and life doesn’t stop during these times.  I often get questions from readers who have to buy a car and Mercury is retrograde – do they have to wait?  Or they have to sign a contract for a new job or they will lose the job.  Or there is a court ruling and they need to sign off on it or be held in contempt.   Clearly under circumstances such as these commitments must be made.

The mythological Mercury was the messenger of the gods.  He carried information and moved freely between the domain of the gods and the world of the living.  Astrological Mercury is associated with communication and the workings of the mind, as well as the mechanical implements through which we communicate.  When Mercury appears to move backwards as it does during the retrograde periods we are forced to slow down and review our past actions, or re-do a current action over and over.  During a recent Mercury retrograde I was writing the monthly Planetary Illuminations report and my browser kept crashing, necessitating me to write and rewrite the article multiple times.  Every time I rewrote it I […]

About Retrogrades

RxI’m in the process of migrating old articles to the blog platform, here’s a chance to catch up on some oldies but goodies.

The study of astrology looks at the motion of the planets in the solar system from our perspective here on earth, and because of anomalies in the orbits of the planets, occasionally during their travels around the sun they appear to move backwards. As a planet turns retrograde, it appears to slow down gradually until it appears to be almost standing still. This is called “making a station.” When planets are in retrograde motion, their effect on us tends to be rather more insistent, like a teacher who keeps us after school to be sure we have learned the lesson that day.

Transits and retrogrades:

Transiting planets make angles to the planets in our own birthcharts, creating environmental patterns of energy that affect us in our day-to-day life. Because of this retrograde motion, a transiting planet often will “hit” our birth planet, move past it, then turn retrograde and hit it a second time, turn direct again and hit a third time. Occasionally Pluto will hit a birth planet four or five times in a truly life-changing transition.

I like to compare this kind of transitory effect to cars driving through your neighborhood with loud boomboxes. When the transiting planet first begins to approach your birth planet, it’s like the car with the loud boombox is at the end of your street and about to turn the corner. It is entering your conscious awareness, but you can still tune it out. As it gets closer to your house, it gets louder and more difficult to ignore. Finally the car is in front of your house (as […]

Catching up and letting go – another personal story of Mercury retrograde

They say that bloggers should never apologize for a lack of posts, but some of you have been with me for years and the past few months is the first time I have ever gone more than a few days without posting.  It turns out that losing your mother is harder than I thought, and when you combine that with a resurgent real estate market (in my other life I own a small real estate company), there has literally been no time to breathe.

All of this really combined to create an incredibly challenging Mercury retrograde period for me.  Usually I sail through with a laugh – “oh yes, Mercury is retrograde.  Of course these things are happening!”  Mercury has been in Pisces, and I had anticipated that the Pisces retrograde would be less challenging because Pisces tends to go with the flow and find ways to swim around obstacles.  Perhaps it’s just because my fingers are in so many pies right now – fixing up my mother’s house, working my real estate business, trying to take care of a limited number of astrology clients – over the past few weeks I have felt I was swimming through a morass of twisting tides that lead nowhere in particular but have kept me from making progress.

Whenever there is an experience like this, where confusion seems to reign, you can nearly always look to Neptune.  Neptune purposefully casts a cloud over your life and makes it difficult to see.  The purpose of this cloud is to encourage one to look within to a more transcendent experience of life and an awakening to a consciousness that supersedes the day to day world.  My progressed […]

Mercury retrograde, and a Virgo Full Moon: February 2013

Virgo Full Moon February 2013Mercury turns retrograde today (February 23) and it’s time to go over the things we’ve done in the past in order to help perfect our future. Mercury is in Pisces now where it tends to be more adaptable and flexible and doesn’t mind reversing itself in order to improve the flow of our lives so this retrograde period may not be as difficult as some others.

Mercury turns retrograde for three weeks four times a year, so it is not a rare event.  I like to think of retrograde periods as being similar to ocean waves on a beach.  The ocean comes towards the shore, and then it retreats so that it can come once more – the ebb and flow of life.  We progress forwards in our life, marching towards the end of time, and then periodically we retreat, take a break, and re-evaluate that progress.  We correct the things that aren’t working, and improve the things that are.

While it’s true that Mercury retrograde periods are not great times to plan a vacation or make a major purchase, I confess I do these things all the time.  In my real estate business I can’t take off three weeks four times a year when Mercury turns retrograde, but if I have to sign a contract during that time I know to be prepared for renegotiations and reversals.

But Mercury retrograde is not the only news – we also have a Full Moon on February 25th in Virgo, the sign of practical reality and the body/mind/spirit system. I personally believe that Chiron is the modern ruler of Virgo because both share an attention to the balance between mental and spiritual health to the physical body. This […]
